failassassin: (oh that's how to cripple the TARDIS?)

[Turlough looks...well, slightly fidgety.]

I know this might be a stupid question. But what all do you give someone on Valentine's Day-either on your world or on Asgard? Dates are out of the question because of her...job, but I'd like to give her something anyway. I've had girlfriends before, but that was ages ago and we didn't really do Valentine's Day like you lot do it. [because whooo aliens!] And when I was on Earth, most of the time was spent in an English public school-not of my own choosing, mind you. [by the little scrunched up expression on his face, it's pretty obvious what Turlough thinks of English public school (it sucks.)]

So while I'm no stranger to the subject of love, I...sort of am to gifts. [it took him a lot of strength to admit that and now he's frowning a bit.] Any help would be appreciated.

You wish to court this person, human? I suggest the eviscerated corpses of their enemies. That seems an excellent choice to impress upon them your prowess in combat and worthiness as a mate.

Well, as far as gifts go, you generally get them something they'd like. Sounds obvious, of course, but that means you are showing her you recognise what her preferences are, a signal of what you hope the relationship to grow into and so on.

[Kimberly's torn between thinking it's sweet and just missing her own boyfriend-to say nothing of it's her birthday coming up.]

Well, flowers are usually good. Unless of course she's allergic to them or something. There's also stuffed animals, and I'd say chocolate but I think everyone's already receiving some [Least that's what it looks like.]

I'd suggest poetry, but we've already established that that's far from your forte.

[Oh hey, it's sheep guy! Ryan recognizes that face- which, of course, means he's all the more inclined to help.]

Well, if you don't know what to do for something more- personal for her? I'd rule out jewelry if you're not that close yet, flowers are good, candy's usually pretty standard- chocolate, it's almost always chocolate. Far as I can tell, anyway. It's not really a thing I've ever had reason to worry about, either.

[He hmms thoughtfully under his breath, considering-- and then snaps his fingers, grinning.]

Or, you could show her you're putting some effort in and make her something sweet instead? It's not hard-- and you just so happen to know a pretty decent baker.

Things you've talked about her liking or wanting are good. Or if there's anything you can do, to show her you were thinking about her -- draw, cook.... Something specialized is better than generic.

[A shrug.] Of course, if you can't think of anything specific, chocolate's generally a good option too.

[Oh hell, here comes Annie. Look who's found a project! She's got a pad and pen out already and everything.]

Well, if you really like her, you can't go cliche, can you? You should go all out!

OH! I know! Can you sing?

Uuuh, who is the lucky lady?

[River smiles, mischief in her eyes. But no, she is really just here to help. Really.]

Care to tell me a little something about her? I'm sure I can think of a suitable present.

[She presses a finger to her lips.]

And no worries. I won't tell any of the Doctors.

[Since everyone can imagine how that would end.]

Turlough. Ohhhhh, how I've missed the fidgetiness. And judging from how much you're pondering over this you must really like this girl. I'd go with sweets but that's just me. So, who's the lucky lady?

I believe Valentine's Day is a holiday created by humans. Other species may not celebrate it. [But that doesn't mean she isn't interested.]

Who are you intending to give a gift to?

In Japan, girls usually give you chocolate on Valentine's Day. Then you pay it back triple on White Day, which is March 14th [not that there are any holidays here, but might as well explain it all]...traditionally, popular White Day gifts are cookies, jewellery, white chocolate, and homemade marshmallows.

What's wrong with English public schools?

[Yes. That's what Clara's getting from his request for help. At first, anyway. Eventually she smiles, head tipping off to the side just slightly.]

Also, have you thought about flowers? I could grow some for you, in just about any color that you like.

Huh? If you're buying stuff for them, aren't you doing it wrong?

Perhaps a bouquet with flowers of a specific meaning? Every plant has a meaning, after all, flowers are no exception.

[Discussing love and gifts and cute things? Merlin is so there.]

Do you know what kind of thing she likes? It's no good trying to impress her with expensive, eye-catching things if she doesn't like it.
