Soooooo....who wants to talk about the afterlife?

[Yup, Norman's doing this. That's right, Asgard. There's a 11 year old who wants to talk about death. Although that wasn't the best way to start off this video, and he has to take a deep breath before continuing.]

I'm not actually talking about religious views, but what do you think happens when you die? Uh, I guess religious stuff works too if you really want to talk about that. I've heard a few things about how death works in different worlds, so I thought it would be interesting to hear from more people.

Also, I thought it would be good to talk about it since a lot of people seem to want to help get Freyr back. [Just going to add some not-bizarre reasoning to this.]

So yeah, if you want to say anything, go ahead. If you want to talk about it privately, you can put up a filter. [A pause.] And...if your world has ghosts or you believe in ghosts, that would be great to hear about too.

We have ghosts, where I come from. Only certain people can see them, though. For some reason or another, they can't move on.

Is this all because of the God people have been talking about, the one who was supposed to have given his life to end the war? That is a strange situation. People talk as if bringing him back to life would be an easy thing.
I could tell you what the popular view on death is in my time, if it would help?

Well, it's something like that. I talked to Hel, and she says there's a way to bring his soul back. The tricky part is giving him a body.

I wish I could be more help, but I... don't remember anything. Not when I died or when I got sent back. It was like being asleep, only without dreaming - one minute you're here, the next you're somewhere else.

Yeah...I'd suspect that it would hard to describe what moving on is like if you didn't become a ghost. [He actually looks pretty thoughtful on this because as much as he knows about ghosts and souls stuck in-between, he doesn't know a lot about what's after moving on. Maybe no one's supposed to.]

Back how death normally means that you become one with rukh. Soul themselves will normally be there but this isn't always the case.

If by ghosts you're referring to spirits, some decide to linger and can even attach themselves to those their close too.

I have no clue what rukh is, but that sounds kind of like my world. [He smiles a little at that.]

What do you mean by 'attach themselves'? Do they follow people around?

I don't think it works the same here.
But in my world when someone dies they become a whole, and if they're alone they become a hollow and attack living people.
So we have to send the wholes to the Soul Society were they reincarnate as living people later on.

I know we have ghosts in my world, but I don't know what happens after they move on... All I know is they just kind of disappeared after I talked to them.

It's probably because you helped them move on. Sometimes ghosts need a little help to move on if they have something they need to figure out.

[But it's a little surprising to hear that Hibiki's seen a ghost.] So back in your world, everyone can see ghosts?

When I woke up here, after being dead, but all I can remember is darkness. Dunno if that's all or there is or if what does happen is too impossible for the mind to understand.

Yeah, I was thinking that you can't really describe the afterlife once someone moves on completely, so the gods probably take us before we're really gone.

[He looks thoughtful for a moment.] But...if everything's in darkness before that, Freyr probably doesn't know what's happening to him.

Then I doubt you'd be anywhere near Hel. And it's not something I worry about, I just try to understand it. [He's not exactly normal, and most of his fun involves ghosts.]

In my would, when humans die, their souls go either to the White realm of Heaven or the Red realm of the Pit, depending on their deeds in life. I can't say I know what they do there, though.

What happens to non-humans then?

I'm a ghost, actually. It's not so different, from being alive. Except you don't age anymore, and, you live in these bubbles which are dreams, called dreambubbles, that change according to your memories.

So...you live in your dreams when you die? Does everyone get their own dreambubble?

They say you return to the Maker's side in death, though there are none among us who would be able to prove that theory. Perhaps speculation is all we are meant to know.

Uh-huh. It's good to know that other people are okay with talking about it. [He's pretty happy with the results. He also has some other things to tell her, but he'll get to that soon.]

I think that's why the people who have died can't remember anything besides darkness. We're probably not supposed to know. [But that gets a frown.] It makes me wonder how much Freyr is aware of what's happening to him though.

It's not like I know what happens when you really move on, but my world has ghosts in it. It's usually when people die suddenly or in a really bad way, or if they still have things to figure out. I'm... [Be brave, Norman!] Back home, I'm the only one who can see them now, but most of the ghosts I know are pretty cool with where they are or they try to get me to help them move on.

Yup! Some people were dead back home, but they can't really remember what the afterlife was like. A lot of it is just theories, but those are good too. It's really interesting to hear about. [So morbid, Norman.] But, oh-! Some worlds have ghosts that other people can hear, and there's other Travelers like me around too!

It depends on a few things. Sometimes people stay dead, sometimes they don't. [Says the boy who lives in a castle with a bunch of ghosts nine months out of the year.] Ghosts aren't uncommon in our world.

So...they become zombies? [That's a new one.] And, if ghosts aren't uncommon, does anyone know why they stick around? Or why they became ghosts to begin with?

I don't think you really want all of our answers, kid. Some of us have died before, and not every world works the same.

...I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know how the afterlife works differently in other worlds. It's kind of a good thing to understand if we end up going to help Freyr. And I know people here who have died before, so it's not really a problem.

You don't have to answer if you don't want to though. I'm not trying to push people to talk about something they're uncomfortable with.

Well, I thought it could be helpful in different ways, and Jack convinced me that I don't need to hide it. Also, I kind of learned a lot back home while I was gone.

It's different for us, but I know a lot about it from where I'm from. I was a guide for the dreaming dead, after all. I would hope I know a thing about death.

I was dead for a long time, so I guess I also have personal experience in this particular subject! I was a ghost for a little while!

People do go somewhere. I've heard it's darkness, but someone also told me it's nothing to be afraid of.

Yeah, I've heard it's darkness too, but back home, I don't think that's the case. Souls are too bright for a dark place. I don't think it's something to be afraid of either...But there's also in-between stages too.

Ummm...Sometimes? I don't think they're that annoying. [While it's nice to know what someone else believes and sees ghost, but he's not sure about someone calling them annoying when they're the only friends he used to have.]
