006 ☾ voice

[ Obon had already passed by the looks of the seasons, but that doesn't stop some people from celebrating it and doing something remotely related to the summer season. Normals always told their friends ghost stories around this time of the year, so some practice will do her good. It isn't often that this particular deep, spooky voice crops up on the network, but the time she chose was a particularly quiet one in the evening. Those who know her will be able to discern its owner - Yozora. This gloomy tone is the one she usually speaks with, but it sets the mood perfectly. ]

The end of summer, the start of fall. It is during these two seasons that the world pays its respects to the spirits of the afterlife. I wouldn't say that those of this ethereal plane are above us, figuratively speaking. Yet for many generations, haven't humans always been most afraid of what they don't know? Strange occurrences that cannot be explained, - it's almost laughable how these mysteries hold so much power over us.

[ She cackles, and she didn't even need to practice two hours to perfect it. There is nothing but silence that follows. ]

What if I told you they were true? Just because we cannot comprehend these happenings doesn't allow us to simply dismiss them. Although belief is waning, tradition remains strong. There must be a reason behind it all, don't you agree?

Well then, shall we revive that tradition tonight?

I heard this from a local in the Baldr district. It happened long before the disease spread, when the city still had its color...

The protagonist of this story is... let's call her K. She had a friend - we'll call her M. K and M were the best of friends ever since they met by the lake at Gefion Park. Since then, they would do everything together, and they easily got along because they liked the same things. However, there came a time when they also liked the same boy. Fron that point onward, it was clear that their friendship wasn't going to last forever. Now, K was an outgoing girl who had many friends. M, on the other hand, was very timid. K took advantage of this and bullied M without hesitation or remorse. Libel, slander, the looks of disgust on everyone's faces and jeering from the crowd as she walked by... it was enough to drive M to commit suicide. One summer night, she drowned herself in the lake. Her pallid, lifeless face on the surface of the lake would haunt the city for weeks.

K felt guilty for what she did, but as the seasons passed, she slowly forgot about M. But, ever since M's death, a string of unfortunate events began to occur. At first, they were nothing but lost items and gusts of wind, but soon, they progressed into looping labyrinths and cryptic messages that only K would understand.

Exactly a year had passed after M's death. It was a cold summer night just like that day she drowned. That day passed by with no strange occurrences, but when K got in bed just to find her own name on the ceiling written in blood, that did it for her. In the middle of the night, she ran to the lake to sob and beg for forgiveness. But the wind only grew stronger and stronger...

It forced the girl to get on her knees and break her fall with her hands. She happened to look at the lake, and there she saw the face of a friend she thought she'd never see again.

No one saw the girl after that, but they say that if you look into the lake at this hour, she might get you...

[ Another cackle and a strong gust of wind from the window closes Yozora's story. ]

Who wants to go next?

My thoughts exactly, Mikazuki-san; and you are excellent at your job.

[tormenting people]

Uh, you'll have to forgive me but this is the first day you've mentioned cryptology anything to me. Need I remind you of M-san? Where were your... your between-the-lines reading skills then, hm?

And - Itsuki doesn't know what he's talking about so his comments don't even count. I've canceled you out at least three times in the past hour.

[god, it's nice being a yes-man again.]

Mikazuki-san's cryptological skills are certainly verified by her reading of the secret message in that other story that you found, by the way; I think I can corroborate that.

It's also noticeable that there wasn't actually a further explanation or denial, but just an attack on Mikazuki-san's occupation.

Aha. Wrong. According to the way you're putting it? The fact that my story needed to be deciphered? Means that anyone who deciphers it has cryptological skill.

Also, having skill like that is not the only possible reason for you two being able to solve it when I couldn't. I don't even need to say what the most obvious one is because it's obvious. So! You're crediting that victory to a simple cause, dismissing the others, and that is wrong.

Plus Yozora can't dismiss you at the beginning of a conversation and then say your claims make perfect sense to her later on. I mean... you can? But you'd basically be doing the same thing he did. Which is contradicting yourself. Also if - fft - if you're saying they make perfect sense to only you and that what I say won't change that...? That's totally different. But if so then this whole thing is null anyway because it's based on what you think instead of what actually is. So. Still wrong.
deputychief: (aah i don't think-- *)

[personal profile] deputychief 2012-09-18 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
She dismissed me at the beginning of the conversation, but as the conversation went on, I explained myself more clearly and she accepted what I said. Ah, I wouldn't say that's contradiction. That's the point of conversation, after all - to clarify matters. If one's opinions can't change in the course of a conversation, what's the point of conversing?

[technically, he could / should just let yozora handle this... but he injects a bit of prolixity in anyway.]

...But you're still wrong.

Being wrong has nothing to do with lying.

...

It's just being wrong.

[ and sometimes she really is too stupid (???) to fuck with ]

[they seem to have gotten away from the point anyway]

So, in conclusion, Rapunzel, you're claiming that, in all honesty, neither of our stories scared you in the least.

"Claiming" means you don't believe me. But what I'm saying, in all honesty, is that your stories were wonderfully told and - and crafted? And they were both were improvised so well if you did improvise them. Because I did.

Buuuut... As your friend? I think it's a reasonable request for me to just - leave the fear part to discussion between you two! I mean, I already know a lot about what you two are afraid of... [ i lied again welcome to thinly veiled threat city. ] But I'm sure it would be very interesting to see a discussion anyway! And you know what's scary? Boring discussion. Trust me. Ferns are not very good at debate.
deputychief: (hmm! &)

[personal profile] deputychief 2012-09-18 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[The question is, is she referring to the actual time he mentioned the word "frightened", or does she still think her terrifying Theophilius-got-chicken-pox story is terrifying...

Whatever. Now Yozora's been thrown off by the f-word (predictable, tbh). Best to cut this all off. And keep agreeing.]

Hmm. Yes, in that case, Mikazuki-san's guidelines on attendance seem to be reasonable to me.

[ Looking back and forth again and also trying to decide whether to yell at Yozora more, laugh at Yozora more, yell at Itsuki more, la-- no that's all. Maybe also having an epiphany about what sort of company she's been keeping all this time. ]

Are you... kicking me out?
deputychief: (i c wut u did *)

[personal profile] deputychief 2012-09-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... [Okay, he'll backpedal next to you, Yozora...]

Mikazuki-san is understandably nervous about these things, you know. These friend things. That's why we have to give her space to set up the rules she wants to. After all, not everyone is as advanced as you socially, Rapunzel.

[hey laughing at him should be an option...]
corona: (guarded )()

[personal profile] corona 2012-09-19 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
[ If anyone went too far it's because she deserves it. ]

Oh - I'm not very socially advanced at all. I can't - it's hard to really tell who's on whose side anymore right now for example...
deputychief: (go free *)

[personal profile] deputychief 2012-09-19 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[you're not socially advanced, rapunzel???? NO WAY]

Ah. Would you like to second the motion, Rapunzel?

That is your job, deputy brigade chief.

Then I second the motion, and, without objections, the motion to adjourn will be approved.
