Fourth Catch - Voice

So, I have a quick question.

[There is the sound of a rustling bag and then the sound of someone crunching down on something. Since it's Finnick and he likes sweets, it's probably just a sugar cube. There is a few moments of silence still before he speaks again.]

I've noticed that some people get really surprised when they encounter someone that doesn't want to leave this place. Is there anyone out there that doesn't want to go back to their world? Besides the obvious people I know of course.

We can't be the only ones that want to stay, right?

[He thinks on that and he smiles.]

I think if they all got to come here, even if we weren't friends they still deserve to have another chance too.

[He nods to her question about herself.]

I think you are. You're very strong. You know Rue, there is something that I haven't been truthful about. I thought since you're such a strong girl that you would be able to keep my secret.

[She pouts at him for that, nodding reluctantly.]

Okayyyyy, if you say so. As long as they don't hurt my friends here!

[Rue stops her pouting, tilting forward in her chair curiously.] What secret?

I'm like you Rue. That's the secret, and I can't tell anyone about it.

Like...me?

[At first, she doesn't get it, bottom lip sticking out in confusion as she tries to figure it out.

He's a Victor, so he was a Tribute like her. But she already knew that. What else...?

She stops.]

You're gone? Back home?

Yeah. I don't think I could tell anyone else but you. If Katniss, Peeta or -

[He pauses his voice actually cracking.]

If Annie found out. I think it would hurt her.

[Hmmm she's met Annie and likes her, but why would Annie's opinion matter more?]

Is it because you're from the same district?

[He smiles and rubs the back of his neck. It's an odd nervous habit to have.]

Well, there is that. But she's also my wife.

She is?

[Interest levels suddenly peaking. When did this happen? Even Rue knows Finnick has a reputation for flitting from one Capitol citizen to another. Surely a wedding between two Victors would have been huge news?]

Oh yeah...you're from after.

Yes, she is. She's my wife and so I don't want her to be hurt. This would only hurt her. So, you think you can keep my secret?

[Nodding enthusiastically. It kind of makes sense now, the injuries he had when he first showed up and wouldn't answer her questions. At least someone is telling her something now.]

I can keep it! I promise!

You aren't going to tell Katniss and Peeta?

No. I'm not going to tell them either. I don't think it's something I'll be telling anyone but you. If I told Katniss and Peeta it would just upset them even more than they already are.

Sometimes it's easier to keep things to yourself, and not burden other people so they can continue to smile.

Oh...I understand.

[She twists a curl around her finger, looking down.]

When people find out I'm dead, they don't act the same around me. I like it better when they don't know.
