Either you all like singing in public or the gods have an excellent sense of humor.

[If it isn't Jacob, looking ever so amused at all the things he had heard on the network. Really, some of you even have wonderful voices, he's impressed.]

But either way, all of what I've seen has made me curious. Music certainly has a giant influence on most of our lives...but what does it mean to you? Is it something you listen to casually, or has anything spoken to you? Some songs can do everything from making people burst out in tears or dwell on things they thought were over and gone with.

What role does it play in your life, residents of Asgard?

Classical music is really one of the finest genres of music, I believe. There's something quite moving about it, even if it has no lyrics...

That's sad about your friend, though. Perhaps he'll get another one when he's there.

They're pretty expensive... I don't know if he'll be able to afford a new one. But I guess there's nothing I can do about it now except keep it in good condition in case he comes back.

[She brightens up a bit.] Oh, have you heard Bach? [She used to call him Botch, but she's had her pronunciation corrected.] My favourite song is by him, but I can't say the name properly because it's in German...

[She hums a few bars of Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde.]

[He nods, smile widening. Guess who was alive when Bach and all those great masters were living and churning out masterpieces one after the other? This man, which is why he's much more knowledgable about the genre than most people assume. He recognizes that song quite well.]

I have, yes. And that would be Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde. A lovely sort of piece. Bach is quite a musical master...he has some of the most complex pieces of music in the world, you know.

I think I like the simple ones best. There are a few that are just on piano, and they're... calming. Some of the really busy ones distract me too much.

Well, some songs are meant to be busy, like Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. He wrote that one as if it was a storm.

But I know Chopin has some quite calming songs on piano- have you given him a listen?

[She's learning to pronounce so many names today!]

Yeah, there are a couple be Chopin on here. I don't remember the names, but I have listened to them. Beethoven seems like it's almost half and half... some of them are really loud and powerful and some are pretty and soft.

Did you know that Beethoven gradually became deaf as time went on? And yet he still composed music even though he could no longer hear it.

Have you heard his Moonlight Sonata?

That's amazing... because music is a language, right? So you can still read and write it, even if you can't hear it. Still, he must've been really gifted.

Yeah, that's another one of my favourites. It's soothing, but it's also... sort of haunting.

It is. But I think what's amazing is that he knew how it would sound, how everything would come together in the end.

I think one of the tales behind it is that he wrote it for one of his students, in honor of her.

I wonder if I have any songs on here from after he went deaf? I'd like to hear them. That really is amazing.

I think they do.If I remember correctly, he started gradually going deaf while composing his Ninth Symphony, and some of his string quartets were composed when his hearing was gone.

You should check the library or the stores, I think they sell his music.

I've got the Ninth Symphony on here. It's... I can't imagine making something so huge and powerful. It's hard to describe.
