But anyone in the area may notice the trail of blonde hair leading from somewhere in the middle of the park up into one of the tallest trees where Rapunzel is sitting, relishing her surroundings and hiding at once. ]

So… Is — This is working, right? I mean - I've never really used a bracelet to talk to other people before and - [ she laughs nervously, toys with her hair ] Actually. I've never really talked to other people before in general. It's kind of — Well - [ sigh ] I just really have to ask and - [ she winces ] Sorry.

[ And then the brilliant speech segues into a faint half-smile, a smile that eventually freezes as something occurs to her and, feigning bravery, she narrows her eyes, scowling to say loftily: ] But if anyone finds him and doesn't give him back? Or - Or they try and hurt him? I. Will hurt you. Because uh - I have a frying pan? And I am so not afraid to use it.

Oh I don't know if I'd call it that. [ And she's wary saying this, but not outright suspicious. It's hard to be threatening when people are nice... ] Mother says I'm pretty "unpalatable".

That's an interesting word she's chosen to describe you. [ He muses with a curious quirk of his brow, though that welcoming smile is undeterred! That is rather interesting. ]

Are you frightened?

[ This is the first time anyone's asked her that. All. Day. He's spot on but it still surprises her to hear it, and she wonders if the terror sitting beside her joy and curiosity is that obvious.

Now she hesitates. ] Frightened of...what?

Of this place. Its people. Its Gods. And how you came to be here. Are you frightened? [ He pauses only for a moment, before his words roll smoothly onward. ]

I imagine it's quite a terrifying experience. It's okay to be afraid. [ That last part comes out as more soothing; comforting ... ]

[ Her expression doesn't change much - it's still tight, drawn - but her shoulders relax visibly and she lets out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding. ] Oh, um. No! No I'm - ahaha - I'm...not afraid at all! Should I be?

You're not? [ There's not a hint of skepticism in his tone or expression! ] Well, I was, when I first arrived. That must mean you're very brave.

[ An admission of fear? Another first. ]

You...were? Really?

Yes. I woke up from my world, in a place like this. It was strange, to know that something could happen like that without my knowledge. [ His smile turns a bit more encouraging after that admission. ]

But there's so much beauty here, if you allow yourself to see it. And so many new experiences, too. So it's not all bad, right?

[ Her enthusiasm isn't at all repressed as, abruptly, Rapunzel leaps a little and nods. ]

Yes! That's it exactly. I was - [ snort ] I was staaaarting to feel a little weird for not minding it so much here...

My, my. You're brave, and you're an optimist. I see.

[ He gives a more amused look at that, appearing to share in the humour. ] I don't find that weird at all. Quite honestly, I can relate. As daunting as it may seem, it's also like a second chance. Right?

Ah. Well. [ Her laugh, she's afraid, is a little too sardonic to be respectful towards her mother. ] That's...sort of where we differ. For me it's more like a first chance, I guess.

A first chance? [ He gives an inquisitive look, though his countenance remains warm. ]

Ah, I hope I'm not prying. I saw that you mentioned you hadn't spoken to anybody before. I assume that's what you're referring to?

[ There's a heaving sigh as she runs her hands over her head, fingers through her hair. ]

There just isn't much to pry into, you know? Today is my first day outside, so...

Is it? In that case, I'm very happy for you. I suppose this calls for a congratulations?

Or just a name! [ she gave hers after all, so... isn't that how it works? ]

My name? [ PAUSE. ]

My name is Johan. It's nice to meet you, Rapunzel. Out of curiosity, what is your favourite meal?

Oh? I'm sorry, that must have seemed quite spontaneous. I only wanted to perhaps welcome you to this place with a nicely cooked meal.

You — For me? Really? [ If the shock in her voice weren't obvious then the look on her face definitely is. ]

[ His smile becomes a bit more subdued, and he presses a fist to his mouth, averting his gaze for a moment. ]

Is this coming off as too forward? I apologize. I just thought you'd need a nice welcoming gift to celebrate your first time out!

Oh no, I'm - ! [ she sighs then laughs, sheepish ] I'm just - not used to that. To people - anyone - making things for me. Usually I make everything myself! Food especially. That would be lovely as long as you don't have the plague, Johan. Or pointy teeth. And aren't a mugger. Are you a mugger.

[ Seeing as she is a fairytale to Johan, and he would not want to interfere with the story's ending, he genuinely does not want to poison her food. Luckily...

His eyebrows raise with amusement as he gives a shrug, holding up his hands in a disarming gesture. ]

No pointy teeth, here. And I'm quite sure even if I were a mugger, I'd want to stay far away from your frying pan.

[ He can't know it, but despite her smile and nod she still worries; it isn't her frying pan she's concerned about... ]

Then...as long as you promise - promise - not to touch or cut my hair, I shall accept your offer. [ nod ]

Otherwise I will use the frying pan you won't steal.

You have my word. [ He pauses, tone as gentle as ever. ] Though, I don't seem to know what to make for you, quite yet. Shall I make it a surprise, then?
