Restless Magic

[It's a rare day off, which means Hibiki can be found sitting on a bench watching her animals at play! She really doesn't have enough time to spend with them, so she's happy to see that they seem to be enjoying the outdoors on this sunny day.

Happy, and a little... tired, actually.

By the time people come across her, she may well have just nodded off in her seat, her form slumped slightly to the side as she rests. The sheep, hummingbird, gusk and Cyndaquil currently running/scampering/flying around don't seem to have noticed, but there is a small hamster on her shoulder now nibbling on a bit of her hair.

...Someone may want to wake the poor girl up.]

[And later, a video call! She is clearly pretty uncomfortable, her hands twisting and fidgeting in front of her.]

I... I didn't really want to ask about it before. I thought I could take care of it, but there's so much going on...

[Deep breath, Hibiki. It's okay to ask for help, remember? With a short gulp, she continues.]

I... have a lot of pets. But I can't take care of them as much as they need it. I work with the medical team and the suppliers. I just--

[Her expression falls as she falters.]

...I can't take care of them by myself anymore.

[As loathe as she is to admit it. Even at home, she had managed to take care of Shii-chan even while juggling her work, but here...

It seems she's bitten off more than she can chew.]

I don't know what to do with them... I have a sheep, a hummingbird, a gusk, a Cyndaquil, and a hamster. They're all really great, and they're well behaved, s-so...

I don't want to have to get rid of them... but I want to make sure they get cared for. What should I do...?

[It's almost like a plea. These animals - each one reminds her of people she can no longer see. To give them away just doesn't seem right. But neglecting them hardly seems proper, either.]

I'll teach you about genetic engineering another time. Let's call it magic for now and leave it at that. It's not, but I'm not a whatever they called their scientists, so I barely understood it either.

Genetic…?

[Yup, she’s lost again. It doesn’t sound like any kind of magic she’s heard before, but she’ll go ahead and just nod for now. But at the mention of scientists--]

Is that some kind of technology in your world?

Yeah. It lets people change things about animals and plants. I don't know much about it besides that. They used to make little pet monsters.

And real monsters on the side.

[She looks curious at first, but her expression falls as she hears the last part. It's not exactly fear, but... Surprise, followed by a dull sense of sorrow and pity.]

...Why... did they do that...? Making monsters...

Sold them, as weapons. They kept the best as their personal weapons. I... kind of had a thing with one of those for a while. Trying to rescue her. I guess I still do.

I see...

I think they wanted to do something like that in my world, too. Or at least... Some magic researchers created an invincible monster, once. But it was only one.

[Was it because it was too powerful and they learned from their mistakes? Or did she simply not hear anything about the others...?]

They ended up making one of those too. Not invincible, but as he liked to say "he was made of awesome." They lost control of him. Bunch of idiots if you ask me.

They had the same problem in my world, too. They put her to sleep for years and years because there wasn't any other way to stop her.

[...And then Shii-chan went and woke her up. That was certainly an adventure.]

Yeah, they never did catch Diago, but he wasn't so bad when he wasn't drunk out of his gourd or trying to pick you up. He was worse than I am sometimes, and used dumber lines.

I'm guessing she was less stable.

The student who brought me there... Said that once a person becomes a monster, they lose their minds for good. They just can't handle the shock.

When she woke up, she broke out of her cell and started chasing us wherever we went. We were lucky none of us got caught.

That definitely sounds unstable. [She shook her head.] Sorry you had to deal with that. It's nothing like the little cynda whatever he is in your arms. It's just hard for me to separate those things sometimes.

[She shakes her head.]

It was scary at the time, and very sad, but... The monster-- no, the girl was finally able to rest. So I think that was for the best.

But Fiery is completely different from that. He's a lot like a normal animal, so I don't mind taking care of him at all! I just wish I had enough time...

At least she was. You don't need to say more. I understand that well enough. [Samantha nodded and glanced over at him again.] He is cute, but doesn't he need special care or anything like that?

[She just gives a short nod. It had been a rather harrowing experience, after all was said and done.]

Not really... He likes to sleep a lot, so even when he plays, it isn't very much. He'll eat just about any kind of berry that's okay for humans.

Well, he's kind of like a hedgehog. I know those. They don't get up and do a whole lot except at night. Kind of quiet really.

He's very quiet. Unless he's excited, or hungry.

[Though even then it's just cute little squeaks of "Cyndaaaa" that she can't really bring herself to be annoyed at.]

Well, at least he's too small to eat you, right? That's a good thing.

He doesn't even really eat meat, so... I don't think he would eat anybody anyway?

I know... I've got kind of a bad record with monsters and magical creatures so they make me nervous.

Oh...! Well, Fiery is really nice. He definitely won't try to eat anyone. And he's really cute, too...! He's very good friends with all of the animals.

I don't think you have to worry about it!

I won't. I ... just need a little getting used to. At least he's not one of those big dragon ones that used to be here a long time ago. Those scared the crap out of me.

I think I saw them around, but I never really asked about them... Everyone with a Pokémon was so nice, I sort of assumed all of the Pokémon were nice too.

That's what they always told me. [She shrugged.] I just don't quite know how to talk to dragons. I really don't.

I've... never really tried, either. I knew the other Pokémon trainers a lot better...

Pikachu was really cute! I hope they'll be alright back in their homes.

I'm sure they will, and I remember that one. The little rodent with the electric powers, right?
