[Steve's voice sounds clear and well rehearsed as he speaks into his bracelet, as if he had actually planned the speech before hand to avoid stumbling on his words. Which...he'll never admit to.]

This may sound strange, but I was wondering if anyone is at all skilled in sewing. I have something that needs patching up, but the damage is more than I'm able to fix myself. I would really appreciate it if someone would help me out. I'm willing to pay for the work, of course.

[This is a task he's been putting off, but as things move closer and closer to total warfare, he figures now is as good a time as any to have his uniform patched up.]

...If anyone has any tips on getting out blood stains, that would help a lot as well.

That's the plan. I know it won't...have the same effect here. But I would feel strange being on the battlefield without it.

( hey, she can't argue with that one. she might not have her ordinary uniform with her here, but she'd managed to fashion one that looked a hell-of-a-lot like it. )

Don't worry, Rogers. You won't be the only guy out there in spandex, I'm sure no one will even notice.

( the teasing feels .. slightly off and for a moment she hesitates - not certain if she ought to be bring it up, but not willing to let it go. )

Have you met the Winter Soldier since you've been here?

No one noticing. That would be a first. Although I feel better knowing I won't be the only one.

[There's a long period of silence following her question. It's not the question that catches him off guard, but how she phrases it. The Winter Soldier. It sobers him and when he response it's a little stiff.]

Yes. Bucky was actually the first person from our world I ran into.

( he's not bucky, at least not to her. it doesn't seem appropriate to her to call him that, either; being shot by him twice didn't make them friends, even if they weren't quite enemies here either. it was .. complicated, and steve was right at the middle of it all. )

Anything I should know about that?

( she's not prying. see, this is her not prying. )

Not really. We ran into each other, we talked. He answered some of my questions about this place and told me about the rest of you.

[There's nothing he feels he should hide and he's being completely honest. And yet he can't help but feel like she's accusing him of something.]

Have you spoken to him at all?

( it's not him. or at least, she doesn't mean to imply that she's accusing anything of anyone. but she'd had a conversation with bucky where he'd made her certain .. promises, of a sort. promises that related to steve and his safety. she was interested to know if they'd been broken. )

When he arrived. ( it hadn't been the most comfortable conversation, but she'd had worse. )

I wanted to make sure he was.. ( what? not insane? not brainwashed anymore? ) Aware of a few things.

What things?

[He has an idea of what she means but he wants to hear it from her.]

( she at least has the grace to look somewhat uncomfortable, though she's not sorry about having the 'let's not try to kill steve,' talk with bucky. he'd already thrown her across the street and shot her twice; she didn't want to repeat the experience if she could avoid it. )

I needed to be sure I wouldn't need to be fighting a war on two fronts. Trust me, the one we're already in is more than enough entertainment for me.

[He understands that, he does. As much as he wants to trust Bucky, start fresh so to speak, his first reaction to meeting him here had been to be guarded, careful. He knows the threat Bucky-no, the Winter Soldier-could pose to them. He's seen it. But some part of him just won't allow him to truly see Bucky as an enemy.]

That's fair enough. I assume you were able to come to some kind of truce?

We figured something out.

( and hopefully it makes you happy to know that they've been getting along since then, sort of. )

I'm not going to ask you to stay away from him. But if something happens, I need to know.

[Even if she had told him to stay away, he's sure she's aware that he wouldn't listen. But he's glad she trusts his judgment enough to let him decide.]

You'll be the first to know. [A small part of him rebels at making a promise like this. But if he can trust anyone right now, it's Natasha.]

( she knows what she's asking of him and that it's not easy. she just hopes that he trusts her enough to know that she won't go beserk over the slightest little thing. the two of them can catfight all the way, but as soon as bucky makes a move to actually hurt steve, she has to know. )

Thanks. ( that's a weight off her shoulders. ) Maybe it'll help him .. to have a friend right now.

[Would it help? He hopes so. He hopes that if Bucky spends more time with him it may jar some things loose. Make him remember the thousands of memories they share. But a part of him can't help but wonder if he's just a reminder of all the things Bucky has lost.]

I hope so.

( maybe he's a little bit of both. but natasha knows firsthand the experience of having a friend at the end of the world (or what seems like it), and back then, clint had been the only one to fight for her instead of against her. there had to be some value in that. she wanted to believe there was value in that. )

It's not my business, but .. Be careful, Steve. He might not still be the person you remember.

[No. Not the same person. Not exactly. With the experiences he has being the Winter Soldier, who could survive that and not be changed? But he knows that the man he knew was still in there somewhere.]

He could have killed me, Natasha. But he didn't. He's still in there, I know it.

( if she's not convinced, she keeps it to herself. getting into the politics and problems of brainwashing someone wasn't something she wanted to relive with steve; the less he knew about her past, the better. she might understand what bucky was going through, but unless he asked for her help?

[That gets him to smile.]

Is that what you're doing? If that's the case, I don't think you're getting paid enough for it.

( she rolls her eyes at him through the video, and then shrugs. )

I'm not. But don't worry, I'll send you the bill in a few years.

[He laughs.]

( see, look? she can joke. she can be fun. she's not always scary! )

I guess it's a good thing I live a simple life and don't spend much. [Except when it comes to food. When he had the serum his grocery bill was probably three times the size of a normal person's. Now he buys a lot of food mostly out of habit.]

( compared to her, he probably takes much better of himself. she eats like a bird for the most part, when she remembers to eat. )

Maybe I can knock a few zeros off the fee, if you're good.

[He mocks a hurt expression.]
