[Steve's voice sounds clear and well rehearsed as he speaks into his bracelet, as if he had actually planned the speech before hand to avoid stumbling on his words. Which...he'll never admit to.]

This may sound strange, but I was wondering if anyone is at all skilled in sewing. I have something that needs patching up, but the damage is more than I'm able to fix myself. I would really appreciate it if someone would help me out. I'm willing to pay for the work, of course.

[This is a task he's been putting off, but as things move closer and closer to total warfare, he figures now is as good a time as any to have his uniform patched up.]

...If anyone has any tips on getting out blood stains, that would help a lot as well.

[It's a hunch, but she had a friend, once upon a time, who be disappointed. Military folks always have more than one, it's not special.]

Yes and no. I did wear it while in the military. But no one else had a uniform like mine. Still don't.

Please tell me it's a robotic flight suit?

[He laughs.]

No, nothing like that. It's just a uniform. [He could explain it's styled after the American flag but depending on where she's from that information might not help at all.]

Can I see it?

[Hell yes she'd recognize it. She's only an almost-military brat herself, after all.]

Uh, yeah. Sure. Hang on a moment.

[There's sounds of movement before Steve switches to video, giving her a clear view of his uniform laying across his bed. There's a large tear across the red and white stripes and a large blood stain across it.]

It's not at its best.

... holy shit. Are you a superhero or something?

[The screen shakes a bit as Steve laughs and the camera pans up on his face.]

Uh...something like that.

Looks almost like an American flag.

So, what's your codename?

[Ellie shows up on the video as he does. Freckled little teenager.]

That was the idea.

It's Captain America.

[For a second, she looks like she's about to laugh. It's so fucking out there, so over the top, but the bloodstains make it anything but funny. The smile dies before she can do much else with it.]

... so, what got you? That's a whole lot of blood.

[He's not surprised in the least when it looks like she might laugh. He'd thought it was a joke back when he'd first been stuck with the name while selling war bonds.]

It's...a long story.

[She holds up a hand, shakes her head.]

I -- try the vinegar thing. I hope it works.

[He's relieved he doesn't have to say anymore.]

[Ellie smiles back, instinctively understanding. If there's anything that's familiar, it's that unspoken rule of letting people keep things to themselves.]
