He's the dad from an old TV series from the 50s and 60s. About the 'perfect' family.
And yeah, all that existential "daddy never loved me" angst was over with grunge rock.

I'm not surprised.
Basically I'm saying that having issues with your father or mother is way overplayed.
Cliche even. At least switch it up to an uncle or a step-parent or something. Be creative.

How should I know? Like I said, 90% absent doesn't give you a good idea of ideal paternal behavior.
Not being absent is a major part of it though, I'd imagine.
The rest of it seems to be trial and error.
