[Emotion does finally flicker over his face, and his jaw clenches with suppressed grief.]

In a way, that's a very, very loose way of understanding it.

The gods are working a lot of magic to hold our souls here. Whether we were or weren't alive when we came here, what they're doing is trying to keep us from returning. Our souls are constantly fighting against the bonds. So even if it would be better if we could be kept, they ... can't do it. Technically, we aren't meant to be here, and they know it, and they regret it. Or Freyr does, anyway.
