There was a case back home once, with a woman who discovered her husband was cheating on her. She lost her mind, drowned her children in the bath tub, and then threw herself off of a bridge. She haunted the roads, climbing into the cars of men who pulled over, and she killed the ones that were unfaithful. She was a restless spirit, depressed and angry and hurt, crazed by grief and loneliness. But she was able to pass on, and her children too, by bringing her back to the house where everything died.

It's not a happy story, but it happens all the time. Death and grief and madness happen, but there's always peace at the end.

There's a light at the end of the tunnel if you choose to go toward it.

Dean came here during the massive influx of people and now he's gone. Or still missing -- I'm not actually sure anymore.

That case was the first one that we worked together after I ran away from home.

And sometimes there's just nothing you can do for people. If you could get everybody moved on then nobody'd have a whole damn house full of them. Nice when there's some resolution, sure, but it's not everybody that's going to get it.

You're right. People get the short end of the stick. When there's a winner, there's always going to be a loser, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up hope.

Life sucks. Humanity can be horrible. They do horrible things to one another. Every passing minute of the day, someone is murdered, beaten, stolen from, violated. It's a terrible world out there and sometimes people keep drawing the unlucky number from the lottery. But that doesn't mean you have to give up hope or quit. What is quitting going to do except secure your defeat? Nothing.

I've seen a lot of nauseating things. Judging from your opinion, I'm sure you have too. But the thing that keeps me going isn't that it necessarily will get better, but that you have the option of continuing on as if it will. If you give up, you're never going to have a shot at anything but your own misery.

But even if there is no happy ending, you can still fight for it.

I don't live life with guarantees. But in my experience, nine times out of ten -- securing peace of mind is possible.

[Every once in awhile, everybody loses. And every once in awhile, the Winchesters are left with a crappy option and an even crappier option. But most of the time, they can deliver peace, and even happiness, to the people they save and the spirits they free. That's enough for him.]
