Ahem.

( Hermione is clearing her throat, almost nervously. Is this thing on...? )

It's come to my attention, since I've arrived here, that apparently I've been here before. I don't remember it but so many other people do .. I can't exactly deny that it might be true. I was just wondering how many people met the other 'me' and what exactly I was like. What relationships we had. I don't remember anything about that time and I'd rather not offend anyone.

( Her tone is more tentative than matter-of-fact, worried rather than skeptical. She clearly looks troubled by the fact that people remember her but she can't remember them. She might have made friends, enemies, developed all sorts of relationships with people and it didn't matter at all now, if she couldn't remember. )

I was also wondering .. is there somewhere I can practice the power that I've been given now that I'm here?

I'm a very good student. I've very high marks in poetry and drawing. Mon français est magnifique! Ah well, we're still learning it, of course. But I've the most understanding of it. My favorite subject is poetry though. I can recite all sorts of poems!

I love French! As tu jamais été en France?* It's beautiful there, and the food is wonderful.

I can't say I've ever been, no. I've never been outside of England, actually. I've been told the countryside is really very pretty!

And well... hmm... I do quite like Shakespeare but my favorite would have to say Mr. T.S. Elliot. He's an entire book of poems about cats.

I'm sure you'll get to travel when you're older - that's when I was able to travel more. ( With her parents, and in the process of a war. )

Oh yes, T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats! I love those poems and I like to think that my familiar Crookshanks likes them, too.

Oh I do hope so. I want to see France and Italy and Germany and oh! The most interesting things are in Africa! They've got real crocodiles! I wonder if crocodiles are anything like in the poem!

I haven't been to Africa yet, either; perhaps, when we return to England, we'll be able to go together. ( Shush, who cares that it's unlikely? It gives Alice something to look forward to. )

I've heard that the library here has many different books from many places, so it's worth a look.

You mean it! Oh! Wouldn't that be lovely! I hear it's terribly awfully hot! Do you think... do you think it's too hot for tights?

And I hope it does! Cats are my favorite animals.

I imagine so. Don't your tights get itchy sometimes?

( Hermione grins. ) Is that so? I have a cat of my own, you know. He's not with me, however. I'm a little worried about how he's getting on, back home.

[She's blushing.] That's terribly indecent to talk about in public, Miss Granger. [You simply didn't talk about itchy tights... even if they did get that way.]

I had three kitties back home. Dinah, Snowdrop and Kitty. Dinah is Kitty and Snowdrop's mother. Dinah and Kitty are all black but somehow Snowdrop turned out all white! I'm worried about them too... I do hope someone leaves them out their special dish of cream at tea time.

Please, you can call me Hermione. ( And forget about indecency! Hermione had to wear tights when she was a child, and at Hogwarts as part of her uniform; they were awful sometimes! )

I'm sure someone is taking good care of them. My cat is named Crookshanks. He's actually half-Kneazle, I think, if you know what a Kneazle is. ( And he's possibly the ugliest looking cat ever. )

Oh! Ah, Miss Hermione then.

Whatever is a "Kneazel?" Is it related so a weasel, perhaps?

Not quite! Kneazles are magical creatures that look like cats, only much larger. They're very smart and can tell if other people mean you harm. Sometimes they can be mean, if you're not a very good person. They make very good pets, however!

Oh! That sounds awfully useful to be quite honest. They must be a very common pet then! And Crookshanks must love you very much!

Ah, well, unfortunately Kneazles are classed by the Ministry as classification XXX creatures because they have a tendency to become aggressive. They are rare and since Crookshanks is only half-kneazle, I'm allowed to keep him.

( She's still smiling, though. )

I like to think that he loves me, though. I love him very much.

Does Crookshanks cuddle with you?

Yes. And some of the other girls that I lived with at school; he's rather attached to me, though.

Well! Cats don't cuddle with just anyone! So clearly he loves you! Cats are very particular you know! Dogs are very sweet and loyal, but they love most everyone. Cats only select a few to share their love with! The people who cats like should be the people you like too!

I suppose you do have a point. I'm a little worried about how he's getting on without me. He has a bit of a temper.

Maybe he'll arrive here, then. That could be a possibility, couldn't it?

I'm beginning to think that here, anything is possible.

Everything is possible, Miss Granger. Not everything is passible. Quite the difference.
