I'm not sure anything else can explain this place. I know that spontaneously going from one place to another isn't possible in my world, and even the worlds in which it is possible, people agree that it shouldn't happen like this.

Let's see -- everyone here is from different times, different places, different worlds -- some are used to magic and gods, some weren't even human before they appeared here. Some still aren't.

Most relevent to you, however, is the fact that there seems to be a rather high percentage of people with military or policing experience here.

Well --

I might be reading too much into these facts, but ... there are three gates out of here, two guarded, one of those very heavily guarded. The people of the city don't like to talk about what's on the other side.

Then there's the way we're divided by living quarters, and then by colour. It's kind of like team colours for sporting events or even -- some sort of military training.

It sounds like a logical conclusion to me. The guards could serve the purpose of keeping us inside, and so could the reluctance of the people to speak, but since we are also being separated by living quarters... it may be worth something looking into that idea.
