1. why dont people from my world remember things that i remember
2. why the hell was scott like 9 years old

p.s. im bored does anyone else have shadow power? i want to see what this thing can actually do

Yeah, okay.

[Despite his... rather abrasive text, Isaac's response is calmer, pacified by his answers.]

When are you free?

[He gets up then, looking for his shoes.]

[the video cuts. she's right across the hall, shoes are optional]

[And Isaac will knock on her door in a few minutes, looking- altogether a little sheepish, hands tucked in his pockets, shoulders drawn up around his neck.]

[the girl who answers the door is small--all of about 5 feet tall, and looks like she could use a few sandwiches. she's wearing a sweater that's rather too big for her, jeans, and no shoes or socks. her hair is long, falling past her waist, and loose. there's something calm and self-possessed about her posture]

Come in. I'm sorry that there's nowhere to sit but the floor.

[the room isn't neat so much as still mostly empty, lived in but not personalized]

That's alright.

[Isaac steps inside- he's a little tall compared to his friends, and so he towers over her, but doesn't really comment on it.]

So, uh- my name is Isaac. I didn't introduce myself earlier.

[she is zero percent intimidated by the height difference, have no fear]

Well-met, Issac.

[she offers her hand to shake. her grip is firm and her palm is sword-calloused.]

Please, sit. You wanted to know about shadows?

[freezerburned]

Uh- yeah.

[He moves to sit, watching her curiously for a few moments. Sort of an odd girl- but then again, he's me much stranger here in the last few weeks alone.]

Yeah, I've tried doing a thing or two with them, but I've got no clue how you activate it. Starting to think that all of this 'powers' stuff is a load of crap, but...

[she sits down as well, across from him. while he's speaking, the shadows in the room are subtly moving, condensing. a cat walks around from somewhere behind him to sit down in front of sophie. it looks very much like a real cat, except for how there's no sheen of a well-kept coat, and how it has no eyes. she makes no comment about the shadow-cat, waiting for him to notice]

It does take some practice.

[The appearance of the cat startles him, and Isaac just stares at it for a moment, his eyes wide. That's more than he thought was possible, definitely more than just a few squirmy black lines on the floor.]

That... you did that?

[hollowchild]

I did.

This is the second level of shadow control. You have to be here for a time before you can achieve it. Where you are, you can make shapes, or make your shadow move independently of your body. I could also make small blades of shadow, but that is more difficult.

Can you- touch it?

[He reaches out for the cat curiously. Isaac has never seen anything like it before.]

[the cat steps toward his hand, butting its face against his fingers. it's solid, but doesn't feel like a cat. there's no fur texture or sense of bone and muscle under skin. instead, it all feels about the same, firm but with a bit of give, like pressing on a tensed muscle]

It's solid enough, although it doesn't weigh much.

That's- that's crazy.

[And awesome.]

How do you do that?

The simple answer is that I reach out to the shadow, and shape it. It's less simple in the doing, though.

[the cat dissipates and the shadows return to their places]

I'm a shapeshifter. Or I was, before Asgard. We think it makes it easier for me. I do try to help people with it, though. That's what Merlin's Teacher's Council is about.

It's best to start small, though. Like this.

[she holds up her hand, casting a shadow on the floor. after a moment, its fingers wiggle and wave, while hers remain still]

[Isaac nods and looks down at her shadow, trying to get a feel for it. His own shadow doesn't move.]

Reaching out to the shadow. Like you just- move it with your mind?

[hollowchild]

I think of it as being a part of me. Like a muscle you have to figure out how to flex.

Alright. Um.

[There's no nerve endings though, no way for him to really move it. Isaac's brow furrows in concentration as he stares at the shadow beneath his hand. He doesn't have a clue what he's doing, and he's about to give up, before the index finger of the shadow twitches, just once.]

Yes, like that.

[her voice is calm, low and even, trying not to break his concentration]

[He takes a deep breath, trying to focus harder, put more effort into it. Eventually the hand moves, just slightly, and Isaac has to stop, dropping his own hand to the floor, before wiping the sweat off of his brow.]

...that's crazy. You saw that, didn't you?

I did.

[she offers a small, congratulatory smile]

You did well. It's very difficult at first, but gets easier with practice. Be careful not to overextend yourself.

[that is definitely a voice of experience]

Yeah. I just.

[He shakes his head.]

I can't believe it.

[hollowchild]

Well, it happened, so you should try to. Magic isn't real where you're from?

[freezerburned]

It's- I don't know. Yes and no.

[He's too stunned by the shadows to really think up a good lie.]
