[ River can be seen wandering around the common area of Odin's Welcome Hall almost as though in a trancelike state. Her steps are light and even, ball to toe on bare feet, and her fingers trail over every object she passes even though her eyes are wandering curiously around the ceiling and the walls and the rest of the room - never to what she's touching. It might seem like she's looking for something, or even listening for something, but she doesn't seem to find it, and never once ceases her calculated footsteps. Eventually the video times out. ]

[ Some time later, the video clicks back on and River's face fills the entire feed, far too close as she tries to peer into the little jewel of her bracelet. She eventually gives up and pulls back to show brown eyes wide and curious, dark hair framing pallid skin that's ... almost gold in the scant lighting.

She's sitting in the middle of the slide, feet tucked underneath her to stop her from going down any further. Her eyes skitter around the confined space before settling back on the bracelet. She says only two words as a whisper, like if she says it any louder, it might break the spell. ]

It's quiet.

[ No one has mentioned it to her yet, but sometimes - almost always - they don't really need to. It draws her out of panic and towards comprehension, the need to understand. Her brows furrow and her eyes dart back and forth a few times, like she's skimming through a book before she looks back up at him. ]

[ a nod, one with a degree of satisfaction to it. ]

Ragnarök. This Asgard would claim that its prevention is possible.

[ She cocks her head to the side, regarding him curiously. ]

Claims of Ragnarök are for the Norn and Heimdall.

I should think that the Norn are in Nornheim, and travel within this realm is unfortunately limited for the likes of us.

[ Oh. A slight smile. ]

[ he lifts his him a touch in acknowledgement. ]

I care little for being held captive and treated as a prisoner.

[ She flinches from his words, her hand returning to hover over her head defensively. ]

'A gift.'

[ A whisper, and she tucks her knees in closer to her chest. ]

They need you.

[ he's aware that fate says that he will be the catalyst of ragnarök, but asgard itself — his asgard — has never needed him. a trophy once, a prize of war to show what had been won and lost, but nothing more than a toy.

his eyebrows quirk upwards momentarily. ]

They need you, too: we're all here to play soldier.

Toy soldiers.

[ Well. She's familiar enough with being a weapon.

Easier not to think about it.

She hugs her knees closer then looks up at him, eyes bright like a flip switched and left everything else in darkness. ]

What other tricks can you do?

[ a quick twitch of a smile. ] Unless we change the game.

[ pause; apparent consideration. ] Here or there?

[ Game changer, oh. Wild card. There's only a blink, but she's storing away every one of his words. Curiouser and curiouser. ]

[ uttered with a degree of disinterest and dismissiveness; she's a familiarity with the myths and legends, so he doubts it'll come as a surprise — not to mention, of course, that it's nothing he can do here, not in the same way. here, he only has words and the telepathy he's been given (refrained from mentioning). ]

[ Said quickly, almost panicked, but she stops herself and ducks her head. ]

[ there's a quick flash of genuine interest at that response, the corners of his lips quirking upwards involuntarily. ]

You don't like it. [ softly and whilst it lacks the intonation of a question, it's meant as one. ]

[ She wilts a little, entire frame going slack in resignation, and shakes her head. ]

It's too loud. It - hurts. Made it hurt.

[ a moment's pause — not innate, perhaps, not something she'd chosen, an experiment (banner), or simply poor evolution— ]

Was that a gift too, River? Not from gods, of course, but—. [ the barest of shrugs. ] Man has a tendency to reach for power beyond its grasp and control.

Man is meddlesome. They take - break things, weren't theirs to break.

[ Heated, maybe, bitter. She softens. ]

Simon said I was born with a third eye. See better than most. [ No, that's not right. Anymore. She frowns. ] Saw.

Man is blind as to its own place in the universe.
