[ River can be seen wandering around the common area of Odin's Welcome Hall almost as though in a trancelike state. Her steps are light and even, ball to toe on bare feet, and her fingers trail over every object she passes even though her eyes are wandering curiously around the ceiling and the walls and the rest of the room - never to what she's touching. It might seem like she's looking for something, or even listening for something, but she doesn't seem to find it, and never once ceases her calculated footsteps. Eventually the video times out. ]

[ Some time later, the video clicks back on and River's face fills the entire feed, far too close as she tries to peer into the little jewel of her bracelet. She eventually gives up and pulls back to show brown eyes wide and curious, dark hair framing pallid skin that's ... almost gold in the scant lighting.

She's sitting in the middle of the slide, feet tucked underneath her to stop her from going down any further. Her eyes skitter around the confined space before settling back on the bracelet. She says only two words as a whisper, like if she says it any louder, it might break the spell. ]

It's quiet.

Mine's all pink. [Seriously. Inara's not sure about the color choice.] I think I'd much prefer gold.

[ River laughs. ]

Kaylee would like it.

Inara has to smile at that.]

Indeed she would. Kaylee would like this place in general I believe.

She's not here. The city's empty.

[ Said quietly, and then she pauses for a second. ]

Do you?

[Her smile fades. It does indeed seem rather empty without Kaylee's perky chatter.]

I'm not quite sure, I'm still trying to decide that. BUT I believe I like it a little better now that I know you're here and Simon as well.

T for troublesome. You have your work cut out for you.

[ Stuck with the Tams? She doesn't envy you this. ]

I'd hardly call it work.

[Really River. She's always been one of your biggest supporters. :| ]

[ She doesn't understand. ]

You're leaving.

[ It's said mostly as an aside, an errant thought unbidden. River blinks, then tilts her head and goes right back to the conversation. ]

Simon loses his socks all the time. I don't even like wearing socks. Troublesome.

River... Me leaving Serenity had nothing to do with you or Simon.

[And everything to do with a certain Captain, but they won't speak of that... Right?]

Perhaps we can find you sandals so you don't have to wear them. [She's a bit amused.]

[ Right. Because River just looks at her with that 'I know' glaze in her eyes. ]

Don't like shoes either. Not meant to wear them, can't feel the earth move beneath your feet. Makes it harder to dance.

[ She could complain about shoes for days. ]

[It figures that River would have known the true reasons behind her leaving the ship... She always had such an uncanny way of just knowing things like that.

Inara smiles, actually laughing a little.]

I suppose this is where our opinions split. I quite love shoes. Which is probably why I owned dozens of them back home.

Dress fancible for polite company.

[ Maybe mocking a certain gunman here? ]

Suits you.

[Oh River, this is why she loves you so.]

And sometimes they suit you as well, meimei.

[ She'll smile, just for you, Inara. ]

Maybe. Sometimes. Once a week.

[ Are we negotiating terms here? ]

[She loves it when you smile, River.]

Hmmmm... Maybe twice a week.

[Yes, obviously they are.]

[ She scrunches her nose in distaste. ]

Not in a row. Three days in between.

[She pretends as though she has to think that one over.]

Well, I suppose that's doable. BUT! One of those days must be with shoes.

[Bargaining, River.]

[ H U F F ]

Businesswoman.

[ She gives a glare. This ain't over yet, lady. ]

[All the smiles.]

Always.

[Oh River. She'll have you dressed like a lady before long.]

[ Despair. (Or excitement?) ]

Of course here too. What else would I be?

[ Her eyes wander off for a second, then come back brighter. ]

A princess.

Oh well that would certainly be something. Though I think I'd need to meet a price first, darling.

You'll rescue him. From a dragon. It'll be black, and it'll eat fire. You'll save the prince.

I will? Well that's something.

[She has no idea what that was about, but... It was River, it surely meant something.]

But until that happens, I'll just continue to do what I've been trained to do.
