and then there's his hero, his antithesis, his other half. if anything, N should know about the power of dreams better than anyone else. he should know the meaning of this girl's words with startling clarity. he has his guesses, but...]

Because then they've got nothing to look forward to! Nothing to make them go "okay, can't stop now, gotta keep going and do this!" when things get really bad.
for a long time there wasn't anything to look forward to I guess.

I think so. having a dream is bigger. a really important goal.
