[Sam is sitting in a chair in the library, surrounded by all of the books, and he looks somewhat tired, but in good spirits. For the most part. Save for that whole 'he definitely hasn't slept' thing.]

Hey -- I think this thing's on... anyway, I'm Sam Winchester.

[Ordinarily he'd never give out his full name, seeing as they're on the run from the Leviathan and all that, but he's ascertained the big bads aren't around -- so a little honesty couldn't hurt, especially with what he's about to ask.]

Nice to meet everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of answers to some questions -- you don't have to, and it's obviously not obligatory, but I'd appreciate it.

First, how many of you have any kind of supernatural ability that was taken away when you got here? It doesn't matter what it is -- telekinesis, the ability to fly -- if anything changed, I'd like to know. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but knowing what changed is important in knowing how we all got here in the first place.

[And, more importantly, how to get out.]

Second, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find some chalk and some spices. Specifically, rosemary, allspice, or nutmeg. Salt would be good, too. I know there's probably a grocery store or something like that around, but any pointers would be great. And, uh --

[Sam pauses before clearing his throat, thumping his pen against the table for a few seconds before continuing.]

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a coat with a lot of blood on it, what would you do to get it out? And I need to know where to find non-blood-stained clothes that'd fit a normal-sized human being. ... hypothetically.

It's a really long story. My world's kind of stuck in a war and we got caught in the middle of it. I'm fine.

[Or, really, Cas is fine. It's the coat that isn't.]

Odin, here.

A war? I'm sorry to hear that.

[ despite the occasional bizarre murder investigation, he hasn't seen anything quite on that scale. ]

Odin... I've heard that name before. He's some kind of mythological figure, right?

[Sam only offers a thin smile at the sympathy for the war. There isn't any point dwelling on it -- Sam can't change it from where he is. But he does attach himself to something he can explain, which is... nerding.]

They're all mythological gods -- Norse, actually.

[Sam almost continues -- because they've had their own experiences with the Norse realm, but he pauses. He doesn't think the gods around would appreciate him telling the population how to kill them. He'll save that for another day.]

Freyr is from the same mythological set as Odin.

[ a nod. that sounds about right. he kind of wishes he'd paid more attention to that sort of thing now but... oh well. ]

Then are these the real gods from those legends... or just other people using their names? [ is "people" even the correct term for them though? ] I never thought they were real...

[ though in retrospect, perhaps he should have? he knows of them all, and has even seen some of them, in some form... but it's still rather hard to accept. ]

It's surprising what's real and what isn't when you start to notice what's behind closed doors.

[Angels are real, after all. The fact that some gods dragged them all here really isn't that shocking to him anymore.]

There's a pretty easy way to tell whether or not they're real Norse gods, but I don't want to piss anyone off more than I have to.

I guess it's all about how you look at things.

[ not an entirely new concept to him, though this is on a scale beyond what he's experienced. ]

There is...? What is it?

It's kind of violent and not that nice. Don't worry about it. The point is, we're stuck here, and these people claim to be Norse gods. For the most part, we can assume they're telling the truth, seeing as a lot of people have lost their supernatural abilities, and there aren't really a lot of beings in the universe that can do that without some serious mojo behind their fingertips.

Oh. [ okay, he kind of gets... what sam meant before now. ] That's true. Whatever they are, they're powerful. That's all that really matters. And they want us to work with them... Are you alright with that?

No.

[Simply, without any hesitation.]

Are you?

I'm not sure. If they really need our help... why not?

[He's quiet for a moment.]

... I haven't really had a great track record for gods and other superpowerful beings asking for my "help", I guess.

If that's all they need, great -- but they didn't have to drag us here to ask for it.

This has happened to you before...?

[ and he thought he had a colorful life. ]

I don't think their way of doing things was right, but they must be desperate.

It wasn't gods, it was angels.

[Lucifer, specifically, but people tend to look at Sam funny when they find out he's the chosen vessel for Satan himself.]

But -- same basic agenda, I guess. Minus the Apocalypse -- anyway, time will tell, I guess. But I want to know more about their big plan before I do anything to help them out, especially if you're taking people from their homes. Some of these people can't defend themselves.

Angels are good guys though, aren't they?

[ ...then again, perhaps angels aren't that different from demons or gods in the first place, either. ]

That's true. If they want us to help them, they have to at least tell us why. [ the last point isn't one he'd considered, but it's a bit disheartening. ] If there's danger involved... [ and when isn't there? ] ...someone has to look out for those people.

I'm not going to leave people unguarded and unprotected.

[That much Sam is convicted about. He's a hunter. He fights the supernatural to keep people safe -- that's it, end of story, thank you and good night. But he's also not going to cater to the whim of a bunch of gods who brought him here with little to no explanation, either.]

Figuring out whether or not there's any stable form of government in this place or a working police force -- those kinds of social services to protect the people who can't defend themselves without powers or the people who didn't have any powers at all -- that'll help. It's something to work on while we figure out how this place works and what the rules of this universe are.

That makes sense. [ he hadn't even thought of there being police here... though now that he thinks about it, he sort of doubts it. and if there were police, could they really help them? ] I think in the end, it'll all come down to us though.

[ the gods or whatever don't seem to really care that much one way or another, at least if they brought those people here in the first place. and like it or not, anything that already exists here... is probably already under their control, to some extent. ]

We can't really depend on what's already here.

[That prompts something of a smile out of him.]

No, we can't -- but understanding what we're expected to believe is never a bad thing.

The only thing we can do is plan for the worst -- and to do that, we've got to figure out what we're working with. That begins with who's actually in charge around here.

You mean the gods, right? I met one back where I woke up...

[ another moment as he thinks about it. ]

Odin was the head of these gods, wasn't he? Doesn't that mean he should be the one in charge?

I haven't had a real chance to interrogate him. He's not exactly a 'come-chat-with-the-civilians' kind of guy. I talked to him for a couple of minutes, though.

I talked to Freyr a little too... That didn't really help either. They're not really what I would expect gods to be like.

Never meet your heroes.

It's always disappointing?

Sometimes they disappoint you, sometimes they surprise you. I guess it depends on who you run into first.

[The first angel Sam ever met was Castiel. And he was now a part of their family. And Gabriel, and Balthazar, they had both helped the Winchesters, right until their very deaths.

But plenty of other angels had disappointed him, even tried to kill him, just because of who he was. Raphael. Anna. Michael, Lucifer. People drive by war or consumed by it -- some victims, some not.

Sam is pretty sure humanity is better off not knowing what goes on above the clouds.]

If you think about it, I guess it makes sense that some divine figures would be good and some would be bad... when you're just reading stories, you don't care about that sort of thing.

People tend to take religion on a surface level and they don't really ask questions past that.

[He used to have a base faith in God -- and he still does. He still prayers, when he needs to, and sometimes, they're even answered. But he doesn't look at angels and the hierarchy of Heaven the same anymore. Not after what it did to so many innocent people.]
