[Sam is sitting in a chair in the library, surrounded by all of the books, and he looks somewhat tired, but in good spirits. For the most part. Save for that whole 'he definitely hasn't slept' thing.]

Hey -- I think this thing's on... anyway, I'm Sam Winchester.

[Ordinarily he'd never give out his full name, seeing as they're on the run from the Leviathan and all that, but he's ascertained the big bads aren't around -- so a little honesty couldn't hurt, especially with what he's about to ask.]

Nice to meet everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of answers to some questions -- you don't have to, and it's obviously not obligatory, but I'd appreciate it.

First, how many of you have any kind of supernatural ability that was taken away when you got here? It doesn't matter what it is -- telekinesis, the ability to fly -- if anything changed, I'd like to know. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but knowing what changed is important in knowing how we all got here in the first place.

[And, more importantly, how to get out.]

Second, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find some chalk and some spices. Specifically, rosemary, allspice, or nutmeg. Salt would be good, too. I know there's probably a grocery store or something like that around, but any pointers would be great. And, uh --

[Sam pauses before clearing his throat, thumping his pen against the table for a few seconds before continuing.]

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a coat with a lot of blood on it, what would you do to get it out? And I need to know where to find non-blood-stained clothes that'd fit a normal-sized human being. ... hypothetically.

That makes sense. [ he hadn't even thought of there being police here... though now that he thinks about it, he sort of doubts it. and if there were police, could they really help them? ] I think in the end, it'll all come down to us though.

[ the gods or whatever don't seem to really care that much one way or another, at least if they brought those people here in the first place. and like it or not, anything that already exists here... is probably already under their control, to some extent. ]

We can't really depend on what's already here.

[That prompts something of a smile out of him.]

No, we can't -- but understanding what we're expected to believe is never a bad thing.

The only thing we can do is plan for the worst -- and to do that, we've got to figure out what we're working with. That begins with who's actually in charge around here.

You mean the gods, right? I met one back where I woke up...

[ another moment as he thinks about it. ]

Odin was the head of these gods, wasn't he? Doesn't that mean he should be the one in charge?

I haven't had a real chance to interrogate him. He's not exactly a 'come-chat-with-the-civilians' kind of guy. I talked to him for a couple of minutes, though.

I talked to Freyr a little too... That didn't really help either. They're not really what I would expect gods to be like.

It's always disappointing?

Sometimes they disappoint you, sometimes they surprise you. I guess it depends on who you run into first.

[The first angel Sam ever met was Castiel. And he was now a part of their family. And Gabriel, and Balthazar, they had both helped the Winchesters, right until their very deaths.

But plenty of other angels had disappointed him, even tried to kill him, just because of who he was. Raphael. Anna. Michael, Lucifer. People drive by war or consumed by it -- some victims, some not.

Sam is pretty sure humanity is better off not knowing what goes on above the clouds.]

If you think about it, I guess it makes sense that some divine figures would be good and some would be bad... when you're just reading stories, you don't care about that sort of thing.

People tend to take religion on a surface level and they don't really ask questions past that.

[He used to have a base faith in God -- and he still does. He still prayers, when he needs to, and sometimes, they're even answered. But he doesn't look at angels and the hierarchy of Heaven the same anymore. Not after what it did to so many innocent people.]

People don't believe in these gods anymore though, do they? Maybe that's part of the problem.

[ souji's never been particularly religious, though he hails from a country that's become more secular. and while he's encountered ancient japanese deities... he then proceeded to beat them down. so yeah. not the most religious. ]

It's possible.

[A lot of the pagan deities he's run into have had that problem -- but there are always believers, if you know where to look. And these guys don't seem intent on eating them, which is normally what happens whenever Sam runs into a pagan deity that's pissed off about not being worshiped anymore.]

They could get their energy from it, but I don't know how.

Things like gods are probably beyond our understanding.

[ izanami and ameno-sagiri certainly were. though it wasn't quite that their way of thinking wasn't capable of being understood, it was simply that their motives and means were just too far removed from anything a human would think. ]

But one way or another... we'll have to figure out how to deal with them. [ either with them or against them, souji isn't quite sure. ]

[He's quiet for a moment before speaking.]

Some gods are. Some gods aren't. It depends on how much they've cut themselves off from humanity. Some of them just want to be left alone and live their lives just like you and me.

[And he pauses again.]

I've met one before... She caused a lot of trouble, but I don't think it was because she wanted to hurt humanity. They're just... too removed from us to really understand things. But some are probably different.

[ it's a troubling though, but are these gods the same? ]

I've met some pagan gods. I haven't met the God yet.

[He isn't sure if he ever will, either. But that's not really up for him to decide.]

I've met a few angels that are worth sticking around for, though.

Then there's really... a God out there too?

[ huh. he wouldn't have expected that, even after everything else he's heard. ]

And now we've all been kidnapped by strange gods for... who knows what.

[And Sam is quiet, for a long moment, at the question.]

Yeah, there is.

[It's quiet, almost thoughtful, but lacking no less the faith and conviction necessary for the statement.]

I don't really know how much He's paying attention to us, in my world, but He's out there, somewhere.

[It's depressing, knowing the truth of what lies above and knowing they really don't give a damn, save for a few select individuals. Like Cas. And Gabriel. Balthazar, if Sam squinted.]

But He isn't responsible for this. He has better things to do than transplant a bunch of random people into a Norse pantheon.

So He's around, but He doesn't do much.

[ ...yeah that sounds about right, one way or another. even knowing that there really is a God out there, is that really any reason to act at all differently?

...not really. ]

That doesn't really seem like something God would do anyway. Doesn't really fit his M.O.

He checked out awhile ago in my world. I don't know how it works in everyone else's.

Nah, I agree. But I don't know what the M.O even is for these gods.

And I doubt the information in this place is going to tell me.

Then for now the only thing we can do is cooperate until we find out more.

[ a shrug. ]

It doesn't seem like they really care what we do anyway.

Odin didn't really seem to give a damn when I talked to him.

Freyr just said to... "live".

Sounds like you got the nicer god.
