[Sam is sitting in a chair in the library, surrounded by all of the books, and he looks somewhat tired, but in good spirits. For the most part. Save for that whole 'he definitely hasn't slept' thing.]
Hey -- I think this thing's on... anyway, I'm Sam Winchester.
[Ordinarily he'd never give out his full name, seeing as they're on the run from the Leviathan and all that, but he's ascertained the big bads aren't around -- so a little honesty couldn't hurt, especially with what he's about to ask.]
Nice to meet everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of answers to some questions -- you don't have to, and it's obviously not obligatory, but I'd appreciate it.
First, how many of you have any kind of supernatural ability that was taken away when you got here? It doesn't matter what it is -- telekinesis, the ability to fly -- if anything changed, I'd like to know. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but knowing what changed is important in knowing how we all got here in the first place.
[And, more importantly, how to get out.]
Second, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find some chalk and some spices. Specifically, rosemary, allspice, or nutmeg. Salt would be good, too. I know there's probably a grocery store or something like that around, but any pointers would be great. And, uh --
[Sam pauses before clearing his throat, thumping his pen against the table for a few seconds before continuing.]
Hypothetically speaking, if you had a coat with a lot of blood on it, what would you do to get it out? And I need to know where to find non-blood-stained clothes that'd fit a normal-sized human being. ... hypothetically.

[While he talks, he's rummaging with something off-screen. Merlin takes a pleased sound and pulls out several bundles of herbs.] I've got some rosemary, but not the other two. Are you using it for the spell--the one to take us back home?
[You do not even know the hissyfit that would result in Sam throwing that stupid thing out, okay. He gets attached to things.]
And that's the hope. I don't know whether or not it'll work, though. Cas is going to help me figure it out. We're missing a lot of the key ingredients for it, but we're looking.
I'll help--I was the Court Physician's apprentice sort of back home, and I know what the herbs sound look like.
Yeah -- that's Cas. He's not really a big people person. I'm sure he didn't really mean to be rude -- he kind of had a bad day before he got here.
[Bad day being absorbing all of Purgatory, killing a ton of people, nearly killing his best friends, and then... well, dying. But. You know. That can be their secret.]
And that'd be great. They work best fresh, but jarred or dried herbs work, too.
[Merlin hesitates.] Cas...he's all right, though? There was a lot of blood on him.
[He pauses for a moment there.]
Yeah, he's fine.
[Most of the blood wasn't his.]
[A little simply -- but what really happened is going to stay between Castiel and Sam.]
[Sorry, Merlin. It's a giant sore subject. And it's Castiel's story to tell, not his. And something tells Sam he would rather never talk about it ever again.]
He should still let someone help him. [Merlin relents. Very grudgingly.] Did you two see the physician's quarters? I might go looking 'round this place later if you haven't.
[Reluctantly, and with a lot of bitching, and glaring, but he did.]
And not yet, but they're around here somewhere.
[Huffs a bit.] I reckon we'll need healers and physicians soon enough, if you and Cas are right about them needing us here for something.
He should probably go see a doctor, but I'm not going to be the one to force him into a hospital. He might not have his angel powers, but he might bite.
[It's hard to tell whether or not Sam is joking about any of this.
Spoiler alert: He's not.]
[Suddenly, eying Sam disapprovingly.] Don't tell me you're like that, too.
You get kind of used to rolling with the punches in my line of work. If I'm still walking at the end of the day, I'm usually good. Cas, too -- he'll be alright, as long as he has someone to watch out for him.
[Then again, Arthur's the prince...] All right, that might not have been the greatest example, but you get the idea. 'sides, if you and Cas are helping people like Cas said you were, then it's only fair someone look after both of you, right?
[By "someone" he means himself, of course.]
[MERLIN WHAT.]
... I mean, we're -- usually okay, you don't have to check up on us or anything. Really.
I mean, you really think you'll come out with injuries and not expect anyone to care?
Well. Person. It's just Dean now, in their world. That thought is oddly suffocating, so Sam shoves it aside quickly.]
-- we usually just have each other.
It's kind of how it goes in my world.
[He can see how that might be the case, if they're always in danger like he and Arthur are. Doesn't mean he's going to let it go that easily, though.]
Well...still. Different place, different rules, yeah?
[It's said somewhat oddly. Like Sam is trying not to think about it.
But the moment passes and Sam offers a smile at Merlin's point.]
Castiel needs it way more than I do.
Both of you need it. He might be the injured one now, but it sounds like both of you try to pretend nothing's wrong.
Nothing is funny. Everything is very much not funny. Sam is losing his grip on sanity and Castiel is dead. They're pretty much as not okay as not okay can be, but to hear it stated so plainly is just... Absurdly funny.]
Well -- alright, we aren't fine, but we're a lot better than we were when we were home, so. I guess that has to count for something, right?
[And Sam pushes his hair out of his eyes.]
We'll be fine.
[It's a slight correction.]
That better?
It's better, yeah. [Whatever happened to them, Merlin's willing to bet it has to do with Castiel's injuries. He's curious, but Sam and Cas have both dodged the questions before now...so Merlin's figures he should wait before poking again.]
Even if you don't trust everyone here, it's all right to look out for one another, at least until we find our way back home, right?
