001.st Fragment: Ill-Fitting Roles [video]

[ Aether isn't usually the kind to post on the network. Talking to others and offering help is one thing, but putting himself out there feels like being given too much attention. Attention is something he's never been very good at handling; he would try to avoid it this time, as well, but the events of the last month made him wonder.

It's best to get any doubts out of the way before they start interfering with his duties. ]

I've heard plenty of people question the gods who brought us here, the purpose we were given and the way we are supposed to fulfill it. It's understandable. Nobody wants to fulfill a role they didn't audition for. In my case, though, my concern is that the role I was given is terribly miscast.

[ This is when the video feed comes on. Aether - a man in his mid-twenties with cerulean hair and eyes - raises a sheathed sword to show the camera. ]

When I arrived, they told me I belong in Sygin; the house of healers and those who aid others. But the only thing I truly excel at is... [ He unsheathes the sword by only a couple inches, revealing a thin blade that suspiciously lacks a sharpened edge. ] ...this. I've been trying to find another duty for this house, but there's little I can come up with.

So... what gives?

[ She'd seen so many posts to the network in the short amount of time she had been here, but rarely was compelled to give any input. There were always plenty of people willing to give input to some strange, seemingly vacuous remarks, and she felt she didn't have much to say on most matters.

However, this one young man is someone she can relate to. ]

I find myself having the same problem. All of my life, I have used a blade to protect. It's what I know, and what contents me.

There may be other solutions.

There must be. Otherwise, the gods' intentions turn from selfish to a complete charade.

[ He considers. It would be crude, at best, to assume that this young lady is part of his house. Asking is the best choice. ]

[ When the feed switches on, Chane will be typing something with a concentrated expression. Beside her is a notepad and pen, though she's getting the hang of not using that in these sorts of communications. ]

[ The text appears beneath her nearly expressionless image, almost like...a Dating Sim... before she types more. ]

But surely our new powers do not mean we must be stagnant with our familiar way of protecting?

Sa. Either the gods have criteria we don't know about -- or they just think they're being funny.

I take it there is at least some kind of reason.

I think it's cause before I came here, I lived with Uncle! He's a detective and most of his cases involve murder.

[ So there are times when it is decided by the state of one's life. It is a comical thought to him. Even the way he lived had nothing to do with healing people. A broken world, perhaps, but it was nothing he took pleasure in discussing. ]

So your case was the world around you, rather than the world in front of you. [ Pause. ] But that still doesn't apply to all of us.

My friend has an interesting theory! She thinks it might be that each of us shares or represents one aspect of the deity whose house we like in! So it might not be my background, but more the fact that death is something I take very seriously.

Could that be the case for you, Oniisan? Something in your personality, perhaps?

[Gods worked in mysterious ways; Mitsuru hadn't questioned her own placement, so it's interesting to see others wonder about theirs.]

You don't think that you can help others?

I don't think I can heal anyone.

[ Aether's hold on the sword shifts slightly; one hand protectively wraps around the hilt, as if showing the position in which it is most comfortable. ]

It simply isn't what I was made to be.

[Well, help doesn't only come from healing, but...]

Was that the power you were given, in your House?

I think the gods might have criteria that we don't all recognize.

I'm in Freya. [And he was not a romantic, really.]

[ Criteria they do not recognize, hm...

There is a way to check those. It's a blunt question at its core, but it's worth asking. ]

And how far would you go in the name of love?

[Very blunt, isn't it.] I.... Well....

I don't know. In the romantic sense, at least.

But romance is only one of love's many forms.

Love for your friends. Love for the people. Love for your siblings and parents. All of these are forms of love, are they not?

I know, but it seemed to have an emphasis on romance when it was first mentioned to me.

I can say.... I do identify with love for my family and the people of my country.[The words aren't spoken lightly- he had lived his life up until now, growing and learning for his family, and continued to fight for his sister's sake..... and their country's.]

I've met people who I didn't think suited our house. [And she didn't like them much, judging by the look on her face.] I agree with the people who say that the gods aren't choosing as obviously as it looks at first.

Hmmm...

[ He knows he ought not ask invasive questions; ought not get involved with anyone if he wants to keep a clear vision of his purpose. But her reaction is a curious one and it's best that he finds all the answers sooner. ]

And which house are you in, if I may ask?

I'm in Heimdall. And people here... well, they help out. It's not always as obvious as offering you food if you're hungry, or their jacket if you're cold, but they're always part of things. They help other people, and worry about other people.

Most of us, anyway.

Gods got a sick sense of humor, maybe?

... I have heard that being capable of granting a swift and merciful end is a kind of kindness, but it's a joke I've never expected a goddess of healing to be fond of.

[ Granted, that he finds it a joke should speak volume of his own sense of humor. ]

Being skilled in the use of a weapon doesn't disqualify one from being suited to helping others.

No... but 'tis hardly a kind of help Sygin would be expected to promote, is it?

They brought us here to fight a war.

[So he's not surprised.]

Regardless, someone may be a capable fighter, and have gained there experience defending others. That would still exemplify the traits Sigyn's house seems to value.

I think there's definitely more to their criteria than they're letting on. [She says it thoughtfully, though. Minako's thought about this before as well, so it's not a new concept to her at all.]

Should we not figure those out? We can hardly be expected to fulfill our purpose here when we don't even know why we were chosen for it.

No, I think figuring it out is good -- I just don't think there's been enough time or resources for us to do that yet.

Haha~, sounds rough... Maybe the gods have some weird standards?

They are a tad too weird this time, don't you think?

[ That question seems to hit a sore spot. Aether clams up, his expression turning sour, and begins to speak in a very dry, unhappy voice. ]

I was a librarian first, courier second. Weapons are merely an exceptional talent.

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. If I had to choose, books will be my option rather than weapons.

Just because you're good with a sword you can't help others like that? Why's that?
