One's employment can determine one's position? [Hmm, that makes some sense ... ] Like military rank?

Not... exactly. Some people have a lot of really hard schooling for their jobs, like lawyers, or help people a lot, like doctors, so they might be treated better than other people. It doesn't always work, though... politicians are in charge of a lot of important things like laws and safety, so you'd think that they'd be respected, but most people don't like them at all.
