Ah--is it working now? Yes? Good.

[Though curt, the speaker retains just enough politeness in his voice to pass as "approachable". The image suddenly turns, giving everyone a good look at the owner of the bracelet: a man wearing a peculiar body suit. Worry and frustration hardens the lines of his face.]

If anyone is hearing this--or seeing this, I suppose, as this device is apparently capable of transmitting video recordings as well as sound--I would like to have a few things clarifed. The maid has already helpfully informed me of the basics, but was unwilling to tell me much else.

Am I to understand that every single person brought here is expected to stay in this city for an indefinite amount of time? And that everyone has been given an ability of some sort?

[Charles stops, taking a breath.] My name is Charles Xavier. If anyone could answer my questions as well as disclosing the specifics, I would be most grateful.

Heh, no we can't get a hold of 'em directly but they certainly know how to reach us, obviously.

So, yeah, there's a connection there. Odin came on after the dragon attack and he sure put on some pretty charm on the heel. Asshole still never answered my question. Loki and Thor put on some stupid scavenger hunt that a wobbly could figure out in a minute.

Needless to say, I think what we're dealin' with are a bunch of morons that think they're gods.

Yet, these "morons" you speak so fondly of are powerful enough to snatch people from their homes and imbue them with certain powers. Not to mention stripping their captives of any abilities they had before, or suppressing them until they cannot be used, at the very least.

Whether they are the real gods or not remains to be seen, but we cannot deny these are very powerful individuals who have brought us here.

[He laughs. Finally, someone that isn't afraid to tell it like it is without resorting to insults.]

You got a point. It's true they have the ability to strip and replace powers. That's undeniable. They're not the gods I'm used to back home so what's seen is pretty much a disappointment on my side of the fence.

Now, I can't say about your world. What are they like where your from?

[Mentally cataloging that response. Varon's just confirmed a very important fact for him: he is not the only one who has lost his original abilities. Charles will be looking into this further.]

We have religions in my world, but no concrete evidence that these gods truly exist. Certainly, there are devout believers who would claim to have visions in some, but, again, there is no evidence. Nothing on this level.

You said earlier that you were disappointed. The gods commonly make themselves known in your world?

I wouldn't say commonly. I'd say more along the lines of selective appearance. Some can be wielded like a weapon given the right circumstances for a short period of time. What I'm most disappointed with is the fact that these gods here can't seem to make up their minds on what to do.

They bring us here, set up silly contests for bikkies when we should be preparin' for battle. It feels Mickey Mouse and cheap to me.

Ah, yes, the cupcake baking contest and the scavenger hunt. Someone did mention that.

Perhaps that is their method of appeasing their captives. As for the gods...well, the stories about the Norse gods vary, and we cannot be entirely certain which parts of the lore are accurate. Or rather, which parts of the lore they're choosing to follow, if they are indeed simply imposters.

Maybe. It'll be apples if they come clean with this mess and tell us what's really goin' on but these contests could be a test to see where we stand as far as teamwork goes. So far, my house is the worst. Can't get anyone to agree on anything here. Guess that's expected for a houseful of meatheads.

You're right about the varying stories about the gods. I know we're here for a purpose and all but what gets me is that with so many varying worlds, the situations we're in are more complicated than it should be.

If there's somethin' more other than that dragon and the place burnt to a crisp, then we're in some serious trouble if it does come to Ragnarok. Heh, not if, when.

I wouldn't hope for too much, honestly. The gods will likely tell us when they wish to, and no sooner than that. The only reassurance we have is that winning this war means a great deal to them, and I doubt they will risk too much when it comes to us. They do need us to defend their city, after all.

As for these houses, have you noticed a pattern in its members? They referred to the gods as "patron deities" in this letter. [Charles holds up the welcome letter, tapping at it with a finger.] In most cultures, the one seeking the aid of a patron god usually dabbles in something closely related to whatever the god represents. It's likely our houses were not selected randomly.

[Muses, almost to himself: ] But what keeps anyone from switching from one house to the other?

Still, havin' just a little to go on would help those that have virtually nothin' to work with but that's askin' too much.

A pattern? Not really. Seems like they come and go at random and this includes the numbers in each house. Don't think there's anything set on that, mate. Switchin' houses would prove difficult since it seems like the go by personality and not by primary ability. Guess they wanna keep things random and chaotic.

By personality, you say. So you do believe there is some correlation between the person and the house.

I think there is. It's the only way to explain how some people that had powers back in their homes are now faced with powers they're not familiar with.

It's like...an extension of sorts. Still don't know all that much though. It's just from observation on myself and a few others that I know pretty well here. Can't say about the others though.

Well, looking at the list this Sam Winchester has compiled, there is a possibility the gods themselves choose which person they would take into their houses. Perhaps those that share some trait with the gods?

It'd be fascinating to observe all this, of course, but I don't see how it would do us much good in a war.

Yeah, I read that part. Switchin' houses isn't up to us so that's pretty much a given that we're nothin' but pawns to them on this flipped over chessboard. I guess that's the best assessment, yeah. We're matched to the patron god and sorted that way.

Listen you're best bet is to talk to those that're smarter on this than me. I've got some knowledge, sure, but it's not enough for the answers you want.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, Varon. I thought you did admirably in answering my questions, and you have given me much to think about.

[There's a momentary pause and a raise brow.]

You serious? I wasn't bein' hard on myself, I didn't wanna give you any wrong information, or I tried not to anyway.

Mind if I called ya Chuck?

Well, regardless. Any information is appreciated, and I sincerely doubt anyone here knows everything, unless they happen to be one of these "gods".

[Startled look.] Charles is fine, or even Professor, if that is easier to remember. May I ask...why "Chuck"?

Heh, I'm certainly not one of them. Chuck is just easier for me. Charles sounds too formal to me. I'm not entirely keen on the idea of callin' ya professor when I hadn't been to school since the 8th grade.

I suppose there's no harm in allowing that. Though, it might take some getting used to on my end.

Eh, I'll keep it to a low roar then.

[He grins]

You're a'right. Usually Poms have troubles with us Aussies. Gotta admit, you had me a bit nervous at first. Thought you were gonna bite my head off for speakin' out of turn.
