... ugh.

[Ellie sounds... out of it. Not herself. Distracted, like she's been hit a few too many times in the head, or is somehow drugged up. She's finding her way but she's slow, like she's having to think about every word before she says it.]

So. Question -- how many of you guys have been in two places at once?

I think I was back in my... my world. For a while.

But I was here, too.

--That's why.

[ It's a simple reason. But, he's a simple person. Once again, his voice is distant.

He doesn't like the look in her eyes and he knows that she's been hurt, too. That she had to go through something similar. His mouth thins. ]

If she's not a God anymore, doesn't that mean we can stop her?

Yeah.

[It sounds painful to say. As easily as Ellie pulls the trigger, she is aware of the weight of that choice. She knows what it means to kill, of what it means to put her life on the line, knowing there isn't any other option.]

We're sure as hell gonna try.

[ He's glad that he has her support. Though, he didn't want anything to happen to her, either. But, he trusted her. He knew that she was strong. ]

I'm glad we're friends.

Already?

[It brings her up short. They haven't known each other very long, after all. But when she considers what they've been through, the things they already know about each other, is it really so surprising?

Without meaning to, she grins. Warm and open in a way that fits her, that lights up her whole face.]

Yeah, me too.

Why not? There's not a time set for stuff like this.

[ He didn't think so. That idea seems silly to him. ]

[Ellie bursts out laughing, shoulders finally relaxing.]

Guess you're right. I'm still not used to making friends that easy, that's all.

Or friends at all, up until I met Riley.

Riley's from your home, right? I'm glad you have her, too.

[ He grins. ]

We're kind of the same. I didn't have any friends my age until I met Killua, too.

Did you live alone in a hermit cave until then, or what?

[Ellie finds it hard to believe. Gon is one of those people who would make friends wherever he goes, right?]

[ The visualization of that... He stops for a moment. It's a little funny to imagine. ]

I grew up on an island with my Aunt and Grandma. It was mostly fishermen and tourists there.

That sounds amazing…

[Enough to make her hungry, curious, the way she always is in the face of something new. So few people she knows have grown up with their family, let alone an extended family.]

What are they like? What did you do all the time?

Miss Mito is amazing! She's kind and hard-working, but she can be pretty scary when she's mad, too. --She's a lot like a Mother to me. [ His expression softens at the thought. ]

Grandma is the same, but she's always quick to let me get away with more than Miss Mito does.

I tried to help Miss Mito out back at home--we'd go out and do a lot of family dates, though. But, I haven't done anything like that in a long time.

[ He doesn't really hesitate to answer any of her questions - why should he? He's never been one to hold any sorts of secrets, or anything of the sort. ]

What was your family like?

[Ellie's smile only grows as he talks. It's nice to listen to him, to live through the stories, to imagine it all. But he smile turns pensive, thoughtful when the conversation turns to her family.]

I- uh. I don't really know. They've been gone a long, long time.

[She doesn't say it with that much sadness. Just a fact. It is what it is, right? How can she miss what she's never had. Ellie brightens a moment later, getting an idea.]

I could tell you about Joel. He's the closest thing I've got to a family.

[ For a moment, Gon goes silent when she mentions that her parents are gone. He isn't sure what the proper response is-- it's such a normallcy for him and his friends both that their parents are gone, or they don't care to talk about them. But, Ellie seemed really sad about it-- ]

Okay. [ He nods. ] I'd like to hear about him.

[Even this isn't completely without doubt and pain, but Ellie smiles.]

He's a grumpy old fart, he doesn't talk much, and he can kill just about anything. ... and he'd do just about anything for me.

We keep each other safe.

[ Gon offers a smile back. ]

It really does sound like you two are close.

He's here too, right? I'd like to meet him!

[ Really, it sounds like how friends treat other friends, too. ]

Yeah, he's here.

He's, uh. Fair warning, he's not so friendly with strangers. He takes a little while to warm up.

[Then again, it's hard not to like Gon. Even Joel might take a shine to him, given the chance.]

[ Actually, the details reminded him of someone he knew from home. Which makes him say what he says next. ]

It's alright, I don't really mind people like that.

You hang around a lot of angry old guys, or what?

[Ellie. No.]

[ Well, it's not completely wrong, anyways...

He laughs, scratching his cheek. ]

I have a friend kind of like that at home. He was a little distant at first, but I know he'd do a lot to protect the people around him. That's why I know I wouldn't mind.

Well, who knows. You never know until you try, right? Besides, one of the first things I ever did was try to stab him, and he thinks I'm all right.

You tried to stab him? Why? Did you mistake him for something?

[ He's seen things now... ]

I- haha, sort of. More like I thought he was hurting somebody I knew. Turns out he was helping her, 'cause she was already hurt and about to fall.

[ A beat ] I'm sorry that happened to your friend.

[Ellie's response is atypical. She hesitates, as if she wants to say something, but then either decides better of it, or doesn't know what to say at all. There is no smile, no relief -- but also no grief, no sadness, no anger. Just distant, strange confusion.]
