[The shuffling of papers and some sort of metallic object getting the last few details hammered into it could be heard in the background before a few friendly faces appeared on the screen.]

Aladdin, Tony Stark and I have been working on a project for a few weeks now and I think we are to the stage where we could use some help with it. That is if anyone interested in a light weight armor with the added protection of runes? We could use a few volunteers to test the design.

We need people with all sorts of different shapes and body types for this. It's important to get all information we can so this will work.

[Aladdin says over his shoulder, he is doing a few last minute checks on the rune work.]

Si, just as he says. So would any of you be willing?

Oh, they do not grow in 'tree' shapes?

[And here he had been thinking these hard as metal trees might be farmed as normal lumber was. Learned something surprising just then!]

Sometime later this afternoon? The others and I will be working on this all evening.

That truly is remarkable. I never thought a tree could grow in such an unusual shape as that must be. One of these days I will have to ask you to show me how that works!

Si, I assumed, I have just never seen anyone with the skill use their talent. I have seen many of the different magics granted to us by the Gods but some how never that one.

I guess if you guys want a demonstration I'd be okay with that.

[To be fair, Ellie uses her powers very unconventionally, sometimes. Especially in combat situations.]

It is a mat people place outside their front doors to greet people, sometimes with a funny phrase or colorful image, and... also give them something to wipe their shoes on. You have never seen one of these?

... a couple of 'em. But only here, nobody had 'em back home. Nobody cared about getting dirt inside.

I guess that makes sense.

They were not in very common use in Italia either. People just did not worry about scraping the muck from their shoes... which given what could be on Renaissance streets could make things interesting.

I didn't exactly live in a house. More like a military base.

That might have been the reason for the lack of them, military men usually are not usually ones to worry about cleanliness.

You've never had to make a bed to their standards, have you?

I can not say I have ever been near a military man's bed. At least not when he was interested in making it.

[Ellie cracks up. First surprised and amazed, then for real. Most adults don't get into cracking dirty jokes around her.]

They're real particular about neatness. And not all of 'em are men.

[Some times when a joke comes to mind you just have to let it fly. ]

No? In my time they were all men. It was thought women should stay at home to look after the house and family, if they had one. And even if they did not... it was thought women were the gentler sex.

But, in more modern times they overcome this thinking?

Hell, somebody should tell that to Tess or Riley. I think they missed that huddle.

Yeah, our military wouldn't have enough bodies if they only accepted men. Besides, where would they put all the orphans?

It is a sad fact that orphans often end up on the streets if they can not find a job as an apprentice or have some family to take them in... I assume that might be different too?

[Ellie laughs too, a little relieved. Here's one guy she doesn't have to convince.]

Yeah. In our world it's kinda rare to have any family still alive, even in the Quarantine Zones. And it's harder to find good recruits. So they take all the kids with no parents and stick them into a "military preperatory academy".

When we're sixteen, we become soldiers.

I sort of... dropped out before then.

[Children younger than her headed off to fight battles all of the time. He couldn't say he approved of that but... it was the way it was. ]

Your world is experiencing a plague? Something like the Black Death? There are occasionally outbreaks of that at home and when they arrive it is best to head for the countryside if you can.

There is no harm in that. You wanted to do something other than become a soldier?

Yeah, but the outbreak's been going on for about twenty years. It doesn't kill people, it just drives them completely insane and makes them want to kill everything in sight.

[Meaning her whole lifetime and then some, this has been happening.]

... sort. Not really. Stuff just... happened, and I had to leave.

Terrible... That happened once here, in a way, with the Taint that drove people into acting on Thiazi's orders.

[He could not imagine a lifetime of that! Was this another sign of the world's breaking apart? Surely no world was designed to create such a lasting illness and suffering.]

I am sorry about your world. Maybe, once we can find a way to stop this Ragnarok, things will improve there.

[Assuming it could be stopped. Nothing wrong with holding on to a little hope.]
