[Alastair's hair is loose, and it is... rather long, actually. Almost down to his shoulders. He runs a hand through it and looks a little sheepish.]

I usually tie my hair back, so I guess I hadn't really grasped how long it's gotten until just now. Does anyone here have some skill cutting hair? It doesn't have to be much, just enough to keep it from getting too unruly, I suppose.

I can pay, if you like.

To each their own -- I find that the term lends a certain degree of drama to the endeavour; broadswords, dragons, all that sort of thing. I suppose there's enough of that to be found here already.

Just Alastair is fine, thanks. And I'd rather not have anyone think it's necessary to add so much drama to the situation that they'd use a broadsword to cut someone's hair, much less mine.

[Something about her tone of voice makes him a little suspicious, but he won't write her off just because of that.]

Sure! It's a hair cut, not engineering.

[ She's all friendly smiles and bubbly tones, but there's no missing that slightly sharp edge to the look in her eyes. This is not a kind soul right here, she really just wants to entertain herself. ]

[He doesn't miss that at all. He's gotten other offers, and frankly, he'd rather attempt cutting his own hair rather than trusting a look like that, but as always, he's ever polite. Calmly, he replies.]

Thank you for the offer, but I think I'm all set.

I'm pretty good at trimming hair.

[She hesitates a moment before adding:]

And payment won't be necessary.

That's kind of you. What's your name?

It's nothing, truly. I'm Inara and your name would be?

Alastair.

[He sighs and there's a brief hint of smile.]

Well so far you're the only one to say you're actually any good at it and who hasn't looked like you might decide to cut off all my hair for the fun of it.

So if you don't mind, I'll take you up on your offer.

[pushesgently]

I usually cut my own. It's simpler that way. [Maria may have intervened a time or two, though, let's be real.] Though I'm not sure I'd call it a skill.

[His lips twitch. Hiding a grin? Maybe.]

None taken. Have you found someone able to do a better job?

[ Behind Alastair, a door creaks open, and Desmond pops his head in. ]

Hey Al, have you seen where the extra quills are?

[ And then, noticing the feed, ]

What are you up to?

[He turns his head to look, and there's a brief smile as he sees Desmond. The feed's just ended, so he lowers his bracelet and points over at a shelf.]

Third shelf. Box marked "quills."

[He runs a hand through his hair, pulling the ends of a lock around to look at it.]

I was just noticing how long my hair's gotten, so I'm asking around to see if anyone is any good at cutting hair.

Hm? [ Welp, if the box were a snake, it would have bit him. He goes to grab it, but glances at his... huh, guess they were boyfriends of a sort now? and reaches over instead to very gently finger Alastair's hair in mild wonder. ]

I've never seen it down before, I didn't realize it was so long.

That's true.

[He hadn't thought of that because back home he'd always gotten his hair cut by someone else in the caravan and barbers didn't exactly exist... but things are different here.]

I assume that since you said "probably" you don't know of any yourself?

[ In answer, Gunn simply tips his head forward, revealing the fact that he's completely bald. ]
