Look, people have a lot of expectations for what a proper relationship is. And yes, it's generally better when you can put up with your intended for most of the time.

But if you think, and you seem to, that the times when you do like him are worth the times that you don't, I think you should forgive yourself for not getting along, for breaking up when you need to and then coming back when you need to do that, as well.

It's about finding a balance that fits you, not some preset standards of what's expected.
