[ when the feed comes up, you can see kate sitting at a desk. around her are piles of boxes, stacked on the desk she's sitting at as well as the floor and the tables around her. the room looks a little dim, like it hadn't been opened in months and just left to collect dust. kate, herself, has been trying to organize the room in some way- though at this point it looks like she's just messed it up more than ever before.

she's part-way through running her fingers through her hair when the video comes up, catching the tail end of --er good at paperwork before she realizes the bracelet's on and she smiles, sitting up a little straighter. ]

I'm Kate Beckett, for those here who are...well. I guess new wouldn't be the right word. I was here in Asgard before, a few months ago, so there might be some people who remember this, but-

Last time I was in the city I was a part of an organization, called the Forensics Unit. It was started up by Conan Edogawa, to act as a sub-set of the hospital laboratory for investigation into suspicious deaths and accidents in the city. I've got a- [ she makes a scrunched up face, pressing a few buttons on the bracelet before relaxing again. ] More information's attached to this message, but I'm here to ask if there's anyone in the city now who is interested.

[ at this point, a ruggedly handsome face creeps into the corner of the video screen next to kate’s. ] Besides me, she means. Although I’m really all the partner she needs. [ castle raises an eyebrow. it’s not that he doesn’t want more people to join the forensics unit, he just likes making it clear that he’s one kate’s greatest assets.

kate just kind of rolls her eyes at the camera, looking over at him with a vaguely unimpressed, though fairly fond expression until he moves back out of the screen and she turns her attention back to the camera. ]

I'm- I was just a detective back home. NYPD. Conan was more concerned with the actual forensics investigation side of it, but we did some good as a unit. With as big as this city is, and has gotten since I left, having a team that was at least familiar with how to solve cases was useful. There were times we acted as first responders, but that wasn't the original purpose. [ kate pauses a moment here, as if she's trying to remember if there's anything else she should add, before shifting a little in her seat and continuing. ] If anyone here has previous experience with law enforcement, or something similar, let me know.

[ off screen, castle’s voice can be heard again. ] We’ll take crime novelists too. Obviously.

[There was a face she only distantly remembered. It had been Conan she had been close to, not Kate, but they'd spoken. A lot of it had had to do with a few unexplained murders, from before having runes grafted to her spine by Loki, before dreaming of home and figuring out how to handle being what she was... well, better than she had.

She didn't really remember Kate, other than that they'd spoken. Not well anyway, but she remembered Conan's name a lot better. So, her face came on the screen, surrounded by the confines of her lab. She was working on something or another, but she usually was.]

I won't be joining your merry band of investigators, no offense. [She'd had her fill of playing by the book back home with Marcia's lectures.]

But, whether you remember me or not, we should probably talk, if you're planning to pick up basically where you left off from.

[ be it the months she spent at home, the going back and forth between memories, or the fact that if she had seen sam at all it was only briefly, but kate doesn't really remember her. the name on the video, maybe, with a very distant, quiet sort of ping in the back of her mind, but not much more than that.

kate spoke to a lot of people last time she was here, so sam will have to forgive her for not knowing what's going on right off. ]

None taken. [ though there is a hint of defensiveness, there. merry band? ] What do we need to talk about?

[ she nods a bit, stacking the papers she had laid out on her desk. ]

We've got the basics for actual field-testing and labwork, but I was more into the detecting side of things.

[Well, this is nostalgic. Conan's still gone, but Merlin's happy to have another old friend back in the city.]

I, er, went in to tidy the labs a few times after you all left. Told someone called Charles they could use it, actually, but I don't think he got the chance to before he was sent home.

[ she's just trying to fill shoes here. it's nostalgic but also not really something she wants to do on her own. thank god for castle. ]

I did notice that there were some things moved around. If he did use it, he didn't move much.

[The first person to answer is actually the man who threw his two cents in on the previous broadcast. He's looking at the other man with an incredulous expression.]

Actually, I've met two. Or worked with two. Not counting... [ the books. but shh, nevermind that. ] Yeah.

Though none of the other Sherlock Holmes worked for the NYPD. That part's new.

[ but kate gives him a small smile anyway, nodding. ]

I don't have anything to pay you with, anyway. [ but she nods, shuffling things around on her desk. ] That'd...be a lot of help, actually. How long have you been in the city?

[This would be written, but Itachi doesn't trust his handwriting at the moment. As it is, the voice on the other end is rather tired sounding. He wasn't a combatant, but he might as well have been for all the pain and injuries he insisted on taking upon himself.]

I am a ninja, for what its worth, and I have some skills in that department even if it isn't exactly what you're looking for.

My clan... they used to run the police department in our village.

[ for all it's worth, kate manages to keep any level of possible judgement, possible disbelief, out of her voice. when she thinks of ninjas she thinks of jackie chan movies, and even then...

but then she has to remind herself of where she is and what she's doing. here, in asgard, it's possible for these things to happen. for people to be things she never thought honestly possible. ]

How did your department work? In your village? [ the question is an honest one. she's just trying to figure out how different things will be. ]

I ... don't remember if we've had any contact before, but. I have a friend who's a sort of detective. He never ties himself to anything or officially joins anything, but he's absurdly good at what he does and I thought it might be worth keeping in contact, at least.

[ Sherlock, why are you such a special snowflake? ]

[ oh goodness, this wouldn't happen to be a special snowflake she worked with before, would it? ]

I don't think we have, but better late than never. [ it's that whole explanation part that has her pausing for a moment. ] What do you mean sort of a detective?

[ she remembers this person. they had worked together, sort of; but not much before she disappeared. if the city is bringing people back again .. does that mean something? hm. something to puzzle out. ]

As far as I can tell the forensics unit was disbanded after several key members were sent home. [ ie: you. conan. ] It might be nice to have it again; there have been several instances where it would have been useful.

[ aka that time people ran around killing each other. ]

[ kate smiles a little at the camera, nodding in thanks at the welcome back. she hasn't even thought about just how many people are being brought back, or if it would mean anything that she was back at all.

just a fact she had, and now she's rolling back with it.

and hearing that it'd been disbanded doesn't necessarily surprise her. part of kate wants to feel a little guilty about that, but it couldn't be helped. now all she has is to get it going again. which is where her smile fades to something more serious, and questioning. ]

I definitely don't have experience with law enforcement, but I know someone who does. [ Not that she's actually talked to Stiles' dad since he got here. ] And welcome back. If that's even the right thing to say, considering...

That's fine. I've been getting some interest already, which was more than we had last time.

[ makes her a little sad. conan would have been really excited about all the new faces.

but then kate shakes her head. ]

No, that's okay. It's good to be back, all things considering. I got kind of used to this place last time.

Well, I can give you plus one with law enforcement experience. [ Say it loud, say it proud, that's his opinion. ] Detective Inspector Lestrade, Scotland Yard. Thought about dabbling in novel-writing, of course, if that helps. Not really on to take over more career fields than I need, though, is it?

[ Okay, so the last part is all sarcasm. How shocking.

He is genuinely interested in helping out, though, promise. ]

[ she can't help the very curious little connection she makes to one sherlock holmes she had the pleasure of working with last time she was here. not something to bring up quite yet, though. ]

Don't worry about the novel-writing. I'm pretty sure one mysterious writer is enough.

Can't say I'm much of a novelist, but I've been county sheriff back where I come from the past eight years. I was a deputy before that. Truth be told I've been working in law enforcement for more years than I care to remember.

[ my people, that's basically what kate's smile says right about now. ]

Nice to meet you, Sheriff. I was in blue for about eight years, too, before I became detective. [ youngest person to be promoted to detective in nypd history, actually. not that she's going to mention that. ] I hope that's not a 'I was looking for a break' kind of comment.

[ jokes, all jokes. cops make kate feel comfortable, promoted or otherwise. ]

I worked with the FBI crime lab but eventually did work in the field. I also taught at the Academy in Quantico at the same time. Is that the sort of thing you're looking for?

[Because trotting out his entire resume could come across as bragging, he's just going to leave it there. And, also, put off the whole "Special Investigator" thing as long as he can.

I'd say so. Is this something you'd be interested in?

[ oh she knows alright. she's got a certain impression with certain FBI agents, but she'll be good and not hold that against him. she did her time working for homeland security, so she's got a better grip on how bigger government enforcement tends to go than a year or so ago. ]
