[All right, yes, voice, now (but first he laughs, because brilliant--no matter what the hell he knows about the future, about what's here and the possibility of what could happen here; about who is here and what that, exactly, could mean--well, it's not like Sirius can't be serious. But he's had time to ingest it all, so now there's this--):]

Yeah. Is it muggles or gods that invented little bracelets that you can write with? Because it's genius. Huge time-saver. Top marks to the man who came up with this, this is a bit of technology I can get behind. It's these, micro-waves, and turntables.

All right, but I'm going to briefly add to the questions that have been endlessly asked. I'm Sirius Black, and I want to know: is the main form of entertainment around here seriously to conduct surveys?

Because you lot are badly in need of amusement, if that's what you consider to be fun. Or are these bracelets just more of a notice board than anything else? It's all about cooking and job offers and survey questions, it's half lonely hearts adverts and half wanted ads and half girl's magazine.

Since we aren't doing any fighting and your little earthquake seems mostly settled--I've got something of a counter-offer to cure your boredom, Asgard: a scavenger hunt. I've a list of things, and whoever gets me the most of these things, I will give him a reward. Or her, I s'ppose, should a girl be clever enough. [ps, this is not a shopping list.] Quills ready, 'cos here goes: six large fireworks, one package of small fireworks, a birthday card, one of those thingers on the stick that you whirl around and around and it makes a noise like a really loud zip--er, right, an inkwell with ink in it, please--fourteen eggs, a box of matches, and a book.

Any book.

All right, that's all! Prizes will be distributed to the one who comes out on top, but I'm not telling you what the prize is, you'll have to earn it to find out. Entertain yourselves! [And Sirius, but that goes without saying.] Ready, set--go to!

[And he's nearly done, but oh, hang on, one last thing--] Also, forgot to mention, James Potter is forbidden from playing. Not allowed. Anyone sees him collecting objects and reports him gets an extra prize. Sit this one out, Prongsie, that's an order. All right, now go to.

[He smiles, grimly.]

That's the first sensible thing you've said yet.

He gets off work in an hour.

[He nods, once, tightly.]

Take me there, then. We'll wait.

[Because Remus knows his way around, better than Sirius. He's only just arrived, recently. He still feels like he's playing catch-up, like he's coming into all of this late--the city, the situations, the balance of relationships between people. Or maybe that's just his own feelings filtering in, because he hates being left in the dark. He hates not knowing, playing games, fucking around, when they could just go and get Snape, confront him, just the way that it ought to be. That's the part of the war that's always frustrated him, all these hushed missions, quiet movements, strikes from the shadows. Nothing is out in the open like it ought to be.

But he waits, to talk to James, because of everyone, James will be on his side about this. He's got Remus, and now he needs James as well. He follows behind Remus, obedient in that, at least. And they wait, Sirius tense, watching the sky like there's something to see, his hands curled at his sides and his jaw clenched.]

[ he's actually gotten out of work just an hour early, this whole 'having to be in a certain place doing certain things for a certain amount of time' proving to be a whole hell of a lot more exhausting than he ever thought possible. which means he's tired, and he's heading home, and he's thinking about all sorts of possibilities that include the couch and possibly getting lily to make him food and-

well, whatever they were, they're all gone as soon as he rounds the corner and finds remus and sirius standing outside. and it doesn't take a genius to be able to tell that sirius, at the very least, seems tense. he could read that from a mile away. which is why he's more than just a little confused when he finally makes it up to them. ]

There a meeting going on I don't know about?

--not quite. I thought--

[Irrelevant. Remus glances from James to Sirius and back again, rubbing at his mouth.]

We were discussing Snape.

[Sirius only looks at James, now that he's here. All his focus is on him, and he doesn't lose an ounce of that tension that firms the lines of his body, leaves his hands clenched up tight.]

He's been messing with Remus.

[That's enough, isn't it? It's always been enough, not that they ever needed much motivation when it comes to going after Snape. They've been out of Hogwarts for a few years now--or Sirius has been, at least, with James time is a bit wonky, but the point stands: they should be beyond school grudges. Only it isn't just a grudge with Snape. You don't let people mess with your friends, and you especially don't let evil buggers mess with your friends. They say that Snape is on their side, that's what Sirius has been told, but he's also been told a bit more about the future as well. And he knows Snape. He knows the extent to which people actually change, and that's such a small, minimal change. Snape will always be a nasty piece of work.

So he stares at James, hard, waiting for him to say the words he's got to say, like a dog waiting to be let off the lead.]

Snape?

[ james tries to remain nonchalant. no matter what kind of tension that name brings to the back of his neck, that uncomfortable feeling down the back of his spine. he remembers the feeling of the killing curse and remembers why he did it and now he's seeing just what sort of conversation his two best friends were having and he's not exactly excited.

his eyes eyes move from remus to sirius when he speaks up, seeing the lines in his shoulders, his arms, and james knows that stance. that 'i'm ready for a fight' sort of look. and where as he's used to seeing that and matching it, prepping just because whatever sirius plans on going into james is going to follow, something in his stomach drops. sirius is and james just turns back to remus, swallowing thickly. ]

What's he done now?

It's not that big a deal.

[He rubs the back of his neck and chooses to glances over at James instead of Sirius.]

He just-- he's been making comments, that's all, you know how he does-- he's trying to rile us up, that's all.

[Sirius barks a laugh, unimpressed.]

Oh, come on, Remus. It's not that big a deal? That's not what you were saying before. Before, you were with me.

[And that had been good. Remus was their conscience, in a lot of ways--that's how it had been since Hogwarts--but being united was even better. Being united against Snape, against the sort of shit that he had been saying--calling Remus names, insulting him--it shouldn't matter as much as it does, should it? Snape is older than them, here. It's pathetic, him insulting Remus--but it doesn't fail to anger Sirius. He's too sensitive when it comes to his friends, maybe. He's too quick to anger when it comes to Snape.]

We just let him say whatever he likes, then? Is that how it's going to go?

[ james can't help how his original reaction is much the same as sirius - a tightening in his jaw, the slightest urge to tighten his fists and do something. go after him. with them all here and talking about this, it takes him back to school and obviously, obviously, the only answer was to act.

especially over remus. james had always been a little over-protective of him, if only because he knew remus would never really fight back. not like he and sirius would.

but then there's also that thought, that awful sort of voice in the back of his head. it's telling him not to, telling him it's not worth it here, that going after snape is a bad idea and james can't look at sirius. not until he starts asking questions, in that tone. merlin this was going to be difficult. ]

So he's doing a lot of the same. It amazes he how he hasn't changed in twenty years. [ a sigh, a rub at the back of his neck. ]

It's all the same shit. Just-- you know how he gets. Talk about being a halfbreed, and shit like that.

[He pushes his fingers through his hair.]

If we fight him, it's only going to get worse. I just have to pretend I'm utterly indifferent to it; he'll get bored soon enough.

If he hasn't changed in twenty years, and he hasn't got any new insults, what makes you think he's going to get bored? He's not going to get bored, and you know it. We all know it.

[His glare at Remus lasts only a moment; a moment later and he's already looked back to James, expectantly, waiting for him to look back and give the word.

But he hasn't, yet, and so Sirius prompts him:]

We're not just going to stay here.

He's not going to change. If there's anything I've gathered from Harry, is that he's the same miserable Sniv.

[ he just shifts his focus on harry, which makes james all sort of angry. all sorts. but he can't do anything about it because snape is stronger than them here. there's something about these new powers that he's getting, and james assumes it has something to do with his experience back home, but he can't accept that.

not until he can catch up. ]

Just...fuck him. Seriously. If he wants to act like he's still a ruddy fourth year that's fine with me. [ because james is obviously so much more mature. obviously.

and then there's sirius, and his eyes are burning holes into the side of james' head. this would be so much easier. james sighs, finally turning to catch eyes with sirius. ]

And we're not going after him either.

[He relaxes somewhat, though he doesn't yet glance over at Sirius-- who is fuming, he's sure.]

Good. It'd just exasperate the situation; it'd make things worse-- we'll leave him alone, and if he and I get into a physical fight again, I'll just-- I'll call you both.

[--wait, did he tell James he and Snape got into a shoving match? Oops.]

[We're not going after him is nearly the last thing Sirius expected James to say. They've all grown older and matured and sort of grown out of the people they were back in school--the war and the Order have both helped to sober the lot of them--but there are still things that get at Sirius, without any trouble at all. The inactivity he's experienced since arriving Asgard has not helped with that at all--it's made him anxious, ready--and the fact that it's Snape--]

You're joking.

[He says that to James, first, giving him the opportunity to take it back. But then Remus follows that up, and Sirius makes sense of what he's saying, and turns to stare at him instead.]

A physical fight? Since when was it a fight, I thought he was just talking to you.

[ he knows what he expects from the comment and it's exactly what he gets- sirius isn't happy with the comment and he's just as shocked at james' mention of it. he should be going out there, just as ready to act, to do something. there's that you're joking and james shakes his head, opens his mouth to start talking- ]

Listen, mate, he's not-

[ there was an explanation that should have gone there, about snape's body control and how powerful he'd become here. about how it wasn't smart of them to just blindly run into that because that wouldn't work here, but he's cut off.

mostly by remus. mostly by what remus says, his attention turning immediately away from whatever what happening between him and sirius to the third marauder there. ]

A physical fight? [ so maybe asking the same question at the same time as sirius wasn't planned, but it happened, james pursing his lips a little as sirius continues, waiting before he speaks up. ] What'd he do? Remus-

It's nothing-- we just-- he was insulting Sirius and I shoved him and he-- with his powers, pushed me back. That's it.

That's nothing?

[All of his focus is on Remus now, disgust written plainly across his face. His fingers are tighter than ever, balled into fists, and his jaw is set--but he manages a short bark of a laugh all the same, bitter and dark--]

It's nothing that he pushed you around like that. He used his bloody stupid-- ability, powers, whatever, he used it on you, and that's nothing? Merlin, Remus. What's something to you, then, d'you mind telling me?

[And to James, now, he shoots a single tight look.]

We're letting that stand?

[ whereas sirius gets angry - that's nothing? - james almost sighs out of relief. snape's powers, his ability to control bodies at whim, it scares him a little. not that he'd admit that to anyone, even to himself (completely), it's true. partially because james doesn't have control over his own powers, has no real way to fight back. ]

He could do a lot worse than that, you know. [ but to say james isn't angry would be too easy. he feels that rage boil up somewhere in the bottom of his gut. ] If he wanted to-

[ james matches the look from sirius. alright, fine, he'll rise up to that. ]

No, but we're not- we can't just go after him. Not here, not like we did at home.

Exactly.

[He still doesn't look over at Sirius.]

It's not a matter of letting it stand, it's just-- it's a matter of, of being the mature ones, of knowing when to walk away.

[Sirius laughs again, incredulously.]

This is insane. This is-- Merlin, who are you two? We have to be the mature ones? We're talking about a man that's lived ages beyond us, and he's still trying to beat Remus up! We're talking about Snape, right--we haven't switched over to talking about someone else when I wasn't paying attention, right? Snape. And you're saying we can't go after him, which is, by definition, letting it bloody well stand, so does someone want to give me a good reason?

Because I'm not letting it stand. I'm not letting him get away with this shit. You two can do whatever you like.

[ there is still a part of james that would feel completely alright with laughing at that being the more mature ones comment. because while part of him might like to think that's what this is about, it's not. it's about survival, it's about keeping his friends safe. which is why his eyes move from where he'd been looking at remus.

and it doesn't take very long before those eyes are shifted up to sirius, james' jaw clenched tight as he talks before james has the chance to speak up. ]

Like hell we're just letting it stand. But Sirius, have you seen him use his powers? He could kill you, kill us all. He's just as petty and pathetic as he was at school, but now he can do it now, and there wouldn't be any consequences for it. Do you get that?

I'm not letting him have that chance.
