Yeah. Is it muggles or gods that invented little bracelets that you can write with? Because it's genius. Huge time-saver. Top marks to the man who came up with this, this is a bit of technology I can get behind. It's these, micro-waves, and turntables.

All right, but I'm going to briefly add to the questions that have been endlessly asked. I'm Sirius Black, and I want to know: is the main form of entertainment around here seriously to conduct surveys?

Because you lot are badly in need of amusement, if that's what you consider to be fun. Or are these bracelets just more of a notice board than anything else? It's all about cooking and job offers and survey questions, it's half lonely hearts adverts and half wanted ads and half girl's magazine.

Since we aren't doing any fighting and your little earthquake seems mostly settled--I've got something of a counter-offer to cure your boredom, Asgard: a scavenger hunt. I've a list of things, and whoever gets me the most of these things, I will give him a reward. Or her, I s'ppose, should a girl be clever enough. [ps, this is not a shopping list.] Quills ready, 'cos here goes: six large fireworks, one package of small fireworks, a birthday card, one of those thingers on the stick that you whirl around and around and it makes a noise like a really loud zip--er, right, an inkwell with ink in it, please--fourteen eggs, a box of matches, and a book.

[She smirks a little.] I shall take that as a compliment as I tend to think I'm hard to forget.

Me? [She has to think on that for a moment.] I believe I'm dealing with it as best that I can. Perhaps not as well as some, but certainly better than others. And you are correct, the amount of magic here is more than I am use to... As are the giants and elves. We have no such things where I come from.

No giants or elves! What about faeries, or wizards, or werewolves, d'you have any of those? If this is more than you're used to, have you got any magic at all, where you're from?

[this is just such a strange concept... though of course it could just be that magic is secret, where she's from. far more familiar a concept, that.]

No, none of those. Though we do have Reavers and I'm certain that's more than enough for us to deal with.

[She thinks for a moment and thinks of River's abilities. But she shakes her head.]

Nothing magical I'm afraid. Just things that science has produced.

[Wo-ow. Science alone, that's boring. That's Sirius' gut reaction, at least; he doesn't actually say it. And actually, when all is said and done, he more feels sorry for people who have lived without magic than anything else.]

What's a Reaver? Something to do with science as well?

Inara draws in a deep breath and looks down at her hands.]

They do, but they represent just how wrong science can go. They were once humans but the planet they were on... The government had been testing behavioral modification and released a chemical in the air. It was suppose to weed out aggression and anger. It didn't work the way they thought, 99.9% of the population stopped going to work, talking to each other, and eventually stopped moving, eating or breeding, and therefore died. But the remaining tenth of a percent of the population had the opposite reaction, with their aggression and primal instincts boosted beyond simple madness into murderous rage, sadism and xenophobia.

[She lifted her gaze.]

They have ships and if they attack...If they take another ship, they'll rape, kill, eat flesh and and I truly don't care to think of what else they'd do.

[Other planets exist only in the sky, they aren't populated by aggressive scientific anomalies. That's for muggle films and things. Except apparently, somewhere, it's a reality, and that's a discomfiting thought. It certainly sobers Sirius, a little, which isn't always easy to do.]

That sounds monstrous enough. You hardly need trolls and giants hanging around, with that lot on you.

They're, er--killable, aren't they?

[Seems a thing that Inara's able to do quite a lot in Asgard.]

Thankfully they can be killed just the same as a normal person. Granted, it's at times a bit harder to do because they're always moving.

What, they don't just--get tired? That's hardly fair.

I've found many things in life aren't fair but, you just have to keep pressing forward regardless.

That's the sort of crap line your professor feeds you when they're trying to be inspirational, y'know. That and 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger', which is sort of flawed thinking.

As I've found what I've said to be true, I would most certainly have to disagree with you. I am curious how you've come to think of it as flawed thinking.

Well, the first one is true, but oversaid, that's all. The second one... well, let's just say I had a second cousin that lived by that one. He was gored fifteen times on fifteen separate occasions by fifteen different erumpents, lived though 'em all, told everyone his stomach was practically dragonhide... and then his cat scratched him and it got grotty and disgusting and he died.

...I don't even know what erumpents are and that sounds horrible.

[She shakes her head.]

Though, I normally wouldn't use that phrase with something physical. More... Mentally. [And she figures he has a story to tell her about that one as well and... She's just going to brace herself just in case.]

Well, it should have been horrible, right, but it wasn't because he kept living. Very weird. And they're sort of like... a rhinoceros, I suppose, except they make things explode. Magical beasts, y'know.

[But, all right. He accepts what she says, and nods, vaguely... and waits a bit, but she doesn't go on. Oh, she's waiting for an example? All right.]

Mentally? Oh, well, mentally. No real arguments there. Stiff upper lip gets you through a great deal, and all.
