[The light in the room is muted and warm, but still bright enough that you get a clear view. You can see a fair slice of the room, in fact, but the obvious focus appears to be the man kneeling in front of a woman, both seemingly unaware of the camera. The angle is such that his face is relatively visible to any viewer, while hers is somewhat hidden behind her hair, although those familiar with her might recognize Ghanima’s tanned skin and sun-bleached hair, or the crysknife in her hand.]

[Fai, his eyepatch a little bit ascew so a hint of a scar is sometimes visible when he moves, has his good eye shut as the video feed starts, but soon opens it to reveal a slit pupil, a yellow sclera. He smiles a little bit tautly, as if both amused and feeling some strain.]

At your leisure, my lady. I think I’ve got myself under reasonable control. [A hint of a joke there, but rather dark.]

[She pulls her hair around to rest over only one shoulder, revealing more of her profile and the long, graceful line of her neck to the camera. It’s most definitely an unnecessary intimacy when she places the edge of her deathly pale blade against her own throat to draw a thin red line there before kneeling down as well, tilting her head to offer Fai the wound, but she sees very little reason to resist her urge to flirt a little with danger in this situation.]

How reassuring.

[Her tone is very dry, filled with the same dark humor as Fai’s]

[His eye widens just a bit in response, and his face betrays unfeigned shock for a brief moment, before his smile widens a bit, not really in humor as to mask any other treacherous emotion. He nods gracefully before leaning in, mouth closing over the wound.]

[And with that, the feed ends.]

[The Doctor is trying to keep his expression neutral to go along with the voice and mostly succeeding, though he looks a bit grim. But it's hard to keep your emotions in check after what he's been through in the past few days, so we'll see how long he'll manage to keep this up.]

So you are a vampire, then?

[He just wants to clarify this just in case he's wrong, before anything else is said.

The Doctor does note that he doesn't seem happy with it... that's points in his favor, at least.]

[Fai nods, with just a hint of a wry smile.]

Mmm, I am. For what it's worth, though, it wasn't really my idea. I wasn't given that much choice in the matter.

[He's not bitter or anything.]

I see.

[He can hardly hold that against him; the initial anger he'd felt and his knee-jerk reaction to the video are both fading now, somewhat.]

...you still have to take blood here? I thought this place rendered everyone... well. More or less human.

Mm, unfortunately. I thought perhaps... Well, back where I'm from, I could only take the blood of one person. But I suppose the gods were kind enough to grant me the ability to feed from anyone.

[There is so much sarcasm in that last part, it could probably power a small city.]

This place did take away all the more favorable parts of being a vampire, though.

Leaving only the unpleasant bits, yes, yes I see.

[He hesitates a moment.]

My reaction to you was... mmm. I'm afraid my people have had a rather... difficult history with vampires. [To put it mildly, but he wasn't interested in giving Fai a history lecture.] I myself only just recently had a difficult time with a few of them, though you... don't appear to be anything like most of the ones I've encountered.

There's no way to reverse your... condition, I take it?

I see. I- Well, I have met a vampire hunter once, but in his case I think it was rather personal, and I honestly felt more sorry for the vampires in question. But I imagine, like you said, that those were rather different than the ones you're used to. I apologize to have brought up any unpleasant memories.

[Because while Kamui seemed rather cold and hard, he seemed to do everything in defense of his twin, and Fai could understand that. Subaru had just seemed gentle, and thoughtful, and very sad.

He grimaces slightly, a strange smile then forming on his lips.]

There is a way. If I got my lost eye back, and thereby the magic in it, my full magic would counteract the need for blood. But since this place has already stripped me of what magic I had left, it seems unlikely.

Perhaps taking a little more care with your bracelet would be a good idea, in future.

[But it's without any sort of venom or anger, simply giving some perhaps unneeded advice.

And he looks rather perplexed at that. What an interesting way to stop being a vampire.]

...were you like this before you gained your magic, or was it an unfortunate side effect of your powers being stripped from you?

[He smiles a bit ruefully at that, because he's not entirely sure still how the damned thing could have managed to turn itself on. But since the damage is already done, there isn't much to do about it.]

[Instead his smile turns a little bit wry as he shrugs.]

You could call it an unfortunate side effect, in a sense. Having half of my powers torn from my body almost killed me. A f- companion of mine fed me the blood of a vampire to allow me to survive.
