If you look hard enough, you might be able to see it doesn't quite reach his eyes. But he also is really in a better mood, because Clara's here, and that makes everything better. ]

So. That thing about dressing up in costumes.

Let's hold a competition! By which I mean, I'll hold a competition, so keep an eye out and sign up if you're going to dress up. That's an order. I'll even hand out prizes!

[ And he looks somewhere off-screen, frowns a little, and waves a hand. ]

[ Then, as if something only just hit him, he lowers his voice to mumble. ]

Uhm. Those of you who know Oswin... They're not the same. Don't ask me how it works, I don't know myself yet, so--

Dressing up? [ no idea what that is. Well, he can figure out it means to put on clothes, but he doesn't know how is that special ]

Amazing how the mood changes so fast around here. Few days ago people were killing each other and now they are discussing what to dress.

[She's off looking in a shop front when he calls her over, and she spins about when he's done speaking, giving him time to mumble something or another in peace. Eyebrows arch, as if she's questioning him on what he was talking so quietly about, and she makes her way over to him.]

Costume competition, Doctor? Of course you'd be suggesting one, you love wearing ridiculous things.

[She's smiling, even through the playful eye rolling and acting as if the idea isn't even a teeny bit appealing.]

I have leaf tea that I bought. Honey, vanilla, white tea, and a little bit of lavender. Shall we make some to celebrate? I think I can make dipping biscuits, even if I start now.

Yeah! Like, uh... Like a cat, or, or... a super hero. Pretending to be something you're not! That's what costuming is.

[ Haha wow look at your being cheerful. ]

Call it coping, if you like. Easier to work with it when you've got distractions. You go insane otherwise.

I wear brilliant, cool things.

[ He smiles wide, nudges her with his elbow. ]

[ And yes, he knows how ridiculous it is to say that to himself. But, ick, none of you were meant to repeat that name.

Then I am in the kitchen and will start the biscuits. [She makes a sudden face.] ...I'm not exactly certain if you'll like these, but I'll give it a go. Maybe I'll make them more vanilla and use a little more of the lavender...or I could use some of the tea in them.

[And now she's figuring and mumbling.]

And are you going to participate as well, Doctor?

So you don't wanna match my outfit?

[ Oh hey, she has an outfit? This is news to Asgard, or whoever listening. When did that happen? ]

[ ...hmmm. ]

I'm not sure. Not sure it would be fun to win prizes I picked for myself.

[ Because clearly he would win. ]

Perhaps you could don a costume to demonstrate how it should be done but exempt yourself from the prizes.

[ Cue Rory's confusion. He gives an awkward little wave, though. And lowers his voice as well. Because that's a thing we're doing. ]

[ She gives him a look, almost frowning. ]

I'm just sayin' it would be fun. Don't go rolling belly up for me or anythin'.

Don't tempt me t'get you a collar or somethin', mister. Tie you to a post all night, might actually keep you from gettin' into trouble.

[He laughs too, but that's also the sound of profound relief. Oh, Rose.]

[He'll use video this time, perhaps the first time since the recent events he's used it voluntarily. And while he looks tired, his smile is a tad more real than it has been. Little steps.]

Clara, is it? Another one of ours, or...? [He's just as glad to meet a friend from here or a friend from home. Distractions, good distractions, all of them.

Also he's not going to be joining the costume thing, so he'll just ignore that part of the message.]

[While the TARDIS is glad to see the Doctor smiling like that again, why did it have to be Clara?]
