001 - Video

[ caroline is sitting cross-legged on her bed, in her room at the freya house, fiddling with something the camera can't quite see yet. her eyes are downcast and she takes a long, deep breath before starting to speak, brushing a stray strand of hair from her eyes. ]

So, I found this today. I ate an apple from one of those weird-looking trees that've sprung up, like, everywhere and then there it was. Hanging from a branch, like it'd been there the entire time.

[ she shakes her head and holds up the thing she'd been playing with to reveal a silver charm bracelet dangling from her fingers. her lips twitch up into smile, but it's a gesture tinged with sadness. ]

My boyfriend got me this for my birthday last year and it - well - it made me think. Do any of you have people you love back home, people you miss? If you could, would you ask the gods to bring them here?

[ Rick is there onscreen. He nods. He remembers meeting Caroline not long ago. And he can tell that she's a little sad behind that smile. ]

Yeah, I'd ask to have my people here in a heartbeat. You miss your boyfriend.

[ her smile grows slightly when she sees him. she remembers him. ]

Hey. It's Rick, right? [ there's a pause as she secures the charm bracelet around her wrist. ] Yeah, I, um, I hadn't seen him in awhile back home before I came here. I was supposed to be seeing him again soon, but then I got pulled here instead. Just my luck, I guess.

Yeah, it's Rick. Good memory.

[ He shrugs just a bit. ] You never know, people get pulled here pretty often. He could still show. If you want him to, I mean. I get that some folks don't want that.

[ she sighs. ]

I mean, I get it. I do. I get why people wouldn't want their friends pulled here. It isn't exactly a vacation. Well, not a great one anyway. But Tyler... he's one of the strongest people I know.

I don't think it's wrong to want the people you care about here. 'Specially if you think they can handle it.

The people I've got back home have more important things to do.

Don't yours?

[ she raises an eyebrow. ]

What, so you just have, like, no friends? Nothing?

You really went for the worst case scenario there, didn't you?

I meant what I said. My friends are all very important people. They don't need to get caught up in this. It's practical thinking.

[ she merely shrugs, unashamed. ]

So you're saying there's not one person you'd want here with you? Even - I don't know - hypothetically.

Hypothetically? Oh, sure, if they could cut between this world and their own and come and go as they please. But I'm being practical here.

[The last time he'd seen Caroline, he'd been in shirtsleeves, helping to rebuild after the attack. While the shirt's still there, it's been joined by a rougher-looking sheepskin vest and a brand-new looking neckerchief in a rather dark blue.]

There's been things turning up for people who've eaten some of those apples, I've noticed.

[Including himself, but that's not really the point. That somewhat sad smile is - and he can understand why it's there, at least a little, although it's not exactly the same sort of circumstances for him.]

To answer your question, though...aye, I've some friends I miss. But I'd not ask the gods to bring them here, for the most part. [He pauses, brow knitting faintly as he considers something, then asks:] Would ye want your boyfriend to come here, if he could?

[ she grants him a tiny smile when she sees him. ]

Yes. Maybe. [ she sighs loudly. ] I guess that makes me, like, the most selfish person ever, huh?

[ and then, to lighten the mood, and because she can't not address this she adds: ] Nice sheepskin, by the way.

No, it doesn't. It just means that ye miss him. There's nothing wrong with that.

[He can't blame her for wanting her boyfriend here. If he'd had someone special like Caroline does back home, he suspects that there'd be a part of him that would want them here too, even if the larger part of him would want them somewhere safe. When she goes to lighten the mood, however, he goes along with the change of subject - and happily takes what he thinks to be a compliment.]

Aye, ye think so? I'd not had it here, but it turned up this morning after I'd had one of those apples myself. Which one did ye wind up eating, anyway?

[They've been on his mind recently, so this question pings him. Instead of texting, he draws.

For once, he'll use colored pencils. At the very least, it's impossible to do Tooth justice without them. Thus, it takes a while before he turns on the video to display four drawings on the table.

One drawing of a part woman, part hummingbird, her feathers vivid jewel-like colors and her wings mid-motion, her legs unsuited for prolonged walking drawn slightly towards her stomach and her arms towards her chest, her mouth open as if she's speaking.

One drawing of an old man with none of the weaknesses of age. A brilliant white and long beard and bright, happy blue eyes. He's holding his belly and arching backwards, mid-laugh, and it feels like the page is humming with his amusement at some silent jest.

The last drawing of a tall rabbit-like creature, curled up in the grass and in the middle of painting an egg, the markings in his fur contorting with the movement of his muscles, the claws of his feet digging into the ground, and his vivid green eyes narrowed in concentration.

Every feather, wrinkle, and strand of fur is lovingly detailed, even more so than his usual pictures. These ones took more time than he's used to.

These are the people back home. The people he loves in a different way than how he loves humans and children. His family.

He doesn't know if he would ask for them to come here. Their support and assistance would be wonderful, but it's hard for a spirit to have their powers stripped from them like that. It would break Tooth's heart to be unable to fly, or for Bunny to not bring hope or North to bring wonder.

Besides, they're needed elsewhere. There have to be Guardians for the children.]

[ caroline's eyes widen in sheer awe at the drawing. it's amazing. there's no other way to describe it. she smiles, though it's a gesture tinged with sympathy. he's obviously put a lot of care and thought into his work, which can only mean one thing - the people in that drawing, they're the people most important to him. ]

Are those your friends?

[Sandy moves the camera so it's facing him instead of the drawings, then gives her a rueful smile and a nod. Yes, they're his friends. The word doesn't seem enough to express what it's like to defend children together with people for a thousand years.

Then he draws another two pictures--one with them in Asgard, and one with them in their separate domains. The old man in a grand workshop, surrounded by yetis and tiny elves. The bird woman fluttering through suspended columns full of teeth, chattering with miniature bird girls. The rabbit bouncing through an underground tunnel covered in moss and flowers, his ears pressed to his skull and a grin on his face.

Then, after a moment's thought, he draws arrows pointing towards them in their natural habitats.

He thinks they should stay in their world. He misses them dearly and their help in staving off Ragnarok would be appreciated, but they're needed elsewhere, and Sandy can't imagine Tooth losing her wings or North losing his enduring youth or Bunny losing his ability to spread spring through the world. Spirits are deeply intertwined with their powers, and to lose them would be to lose a part of themselves.

Although even knowing that, he misses them.]

Asking for any of them to be brought here again would be selfish. [His voice isn't filled with malice. There is only a hint of tiredness to it.]

So you're saying there's no one you'd want here from your world?

To do so would be pulling someone into the midst of war, when they don't have to be. When their lives are as peaceful as they may ever be, why would I wish it?

[ Oh man, is this ever a touchy subject for him. He's playing it off though, forcing a casual tone. ]

Nah. Not that I don't love 'em- but they've got more important things to do now.

Yeah, but, while we're here, isn't there like some kind of pause button hit on everything going on back home. [ a beat. ] At least, that's what I've heard.

[ she hesitates a moment before nodding. ]

Yeah. I mean, don't get me wrong, I have one of my best friends here and that's great, but - I don't know - I guess getting this [ she jingles the bracelet pointedly. ] it made me realize just how much I miss everyone else.

Do you think they'd like to be here?

If I were to ask anything from them, it'd be to return me to my world.

From what I hear, that's one wish the gods aren't big on granting. At least not when it comes from us. If you leave here, it's usually on their terms.

Exactly. That's why I think it doesn't really matter if you want someone here or not.

I have one friend here but I miss a lot of my friends and family back home... I don't think I'd want them all here though, especially my younger siblings. It doesn't feel safe enough for them.

At least you've got something that reminds you of your boyfriend.

[ she nods in agreement - this isn't a place for little kids. ]

Yeah, I guess. [ she holds out her arm, the charm bracelet dangling from her wrist. there's a tiny smile playing on her lips. ] He told me it took him forever to find the perfect present.

I'm not surprised. Girls are really hard to shop for... no offense. It's pretty though.

So these apples actually do something else than taste like rotten fish?

[ rotten fish? wow, caroline is so glad she didn't get one of those. ]

Oh, my God! Which ones were you eating?

[Seriously, rotten fish...]

The yellow ones, they looked normal enough... I thought the teal ones might be the weird ones...

Yeah. Maybe. I don't know. I mean, with everything going on back home, I haven't seen him in so long, Elena, and I guess - yeah - I wouldn't mind seeing him again, even if it is here.

[ she huffs out a sigh. ]

Of course not.

I mean... [Elena looks down and shrugs a little because she knows on some level, that she shouldn't. Stefan's changed and the chances of getting him back have been growing slimmer by the day. But even knowing that, it doesn't change the way she feels so quickly or easily.] I still miss Stefan.

You ate one of them things?

What colour was it?

Teal, I think.

Like, the green ones?

[ Forget the charm bracelet and that question about missing people because what even. Like he'd ever. ]

When did you show up?

[ wow damon you sound about as excited to see her as she is to see you. ]

A couple of weeks ago. Elena told me you were here.
