Ninth Triskele [Video]

[The video begins with what some may find a ghastly or morbid sight: the dead body of a black bird being held aloft by its wings which are pinched gingerly between the pale fingers of a small boy. Mordred stares at the small corpse with a quiet blank expression. The number of feathers that have been lost and a tell tale bite out of one of the wings suggests that Mordred did not kill this bird, but stumbled upon it in his wanderings through the park.

Still he is transfixed by it.

He begins to walk with it still clutched carefully in his hands, shifting it to his palm, wings toward the sky as if they might begin to move at any moment.]

...Oidhe...

[He mumbles before shoving the heel of his boot into the dirt to mark that spot]

O-oh, that poor little bird. What are you going to do with it?

[Mordred frowns, thinking on the matter]

Bury it

Oh. That's good. I can... I can find some flowers, maybe? We always used to put flowers at graves where I was from.

Would you bring them?

Of course. Why wouldn't I? I shall find the finest of flowers in all of the lands.

...What is your name?

[Merlin watches him silently for a moment.]

I think it's a little too late to save it, Mordred.

....

[Mordred's head tilts a little to the side, frown deepening]

I shall give it a burial, Emrys

[His response is a slow nod.]

I'll help you. Think you can wait a few minutes?

[He looks up a little in surprise]

Yes... I can wait...

[A pause before he adds]

Can you get something from my room, Emrys? We will need it.

[Oh boy. Fetching something from Mordred's room means going into the house again--but he already said he'd help. So he nods.]

What is it?

In the closet there are strips of cloth of many colors, and there are threads we may tie them to.

[Merlin looks a little confused, but he nods.]

All right, I'll bring them. Shouldn't take too long.

[Some time later, Merlin arrives, bearing the cloth and string Mordred asked for.]

Is this enough?

[The boy turns up his face to look over Merlin's bundle of cloth and string before nodding]

Yes. That will do.

[Then he holds up the bird]

Now we must pick somewhere to bury it.

[You can't see it, but his eyebrow is cocked behind his shades.]

Man, didn't your mom ever tell you not to walk around carrying dead things?

No...

[He answers quite seriously]

Rhetorical.

You'll catch chicken pox. Or maybe it was worms? Something like that, I don't know. It's still pretty nasty though.

[Not really; it's actually kind of cool, says the boy who collects dead things...]

What happened to it?

[Mordred stares a moment before he shifts the small body to show where there is a bite of some kind]

I think it was attacked.

[ Gently: ]

What are you trying to do?

[The boy looks to bird then to the Doctor]

He needs to be buried

Yeah, he does. Where are you gonna do that?

I do not know. In my world I would know... but in this world I do not know where the dead belong.

I think a dead animal belongs in the park.

Why is this?

It's either that or outside the city. Close to nature.

I believe it should be here, then.

[He's not been outside the city before. He also does not believe Morgana, Lancelot, or Arthur would approve.]
