[The image is fuzzy, someone's cheek, or perhaps their neck takes up the majority of the screen. The image shifts, and suddenly a single golden eye dominates the picture.]

-S THIS THING ON? HELLO? What's with this hunk of junk- I can't believe you have to push all the buttons just to get it to respond, ze... HEY! CAN! YOU! HEAR! ME?!

[With no idea of volume control and even less of the internet, Marisa pulls back and tries to force her hand through the image.]

Sheesh... Why isn't there anyone on the other end? Didn't they say you could talk to someone with this, ze? Does it open up and let me teleport over there or something? Hello!? IS ANYONE THERE?

[The viewer gets a good glimpse of the ceiling as she picks up the device, trying her hardest to make it go, not realizing that her muttering is picked up in addition to the shouting.]

...Shabbiest piece of magic I've ever seen...

[She sniffs the bracelet, baffled, still there seems to be someone on the other end- maybe she did something right?]

...It doesn't smell like anything, ze! And I'm not sending anything either!

No, no, sent as in the past tense of send.

[From the sound of his voice, that was debatably a good thing.]

Eh? What's clear? Hey, who the hell are you?

[She presses her face closer, trying to get a better look at the figure on the other side.]

What's with your face? You some kinda youkai, ze? You got any idea how I use this thing to get places?

I am Equius Zahhak little blonde human. [His lips pulled back, quivering over a fanged, snaggle-toothed maw while he adjusted his broken sunglasses. Why he never replaced the things, nobody knew.]

What is a youkai, human? I am a troll of the noble and worthy Alternian empire. As for travel, I suggest your legs until you can afford pressed animal carcasses to fuel a cycle.

[Marisa grins right back, revealing a perfectly ordinary set of human teeth. However something in the set of her eyes challenges him right back, daring him to meet her in person and call her "little" again.]

Equius, huh? Well my name's Marisa Kirisame, Ordinary Witch! And I'll have you know that a Youkai is anything that ain't human. I know don't have a drop of noble blood in me, but I take on bounties for youkai just like you every day, Mr.Little-Grey-Troll.

Anyway, someone told me I could meet up and talk to people on this thing, ze. I see talking, but I don't see any meeting, so tell me how to get this thing to send me over there so I can show you exactly what it means to deal with humans!

[Oh, the human was trying to glare right back was she? That was amusing in its own way. His lips quivered again, close to a sneer as he looked down at her.]

Bounties, you say? You mean to claim a non-existent price on my head, do you little human witch? Pitting your piddling magics against the might of my arms and the sheer potency of my majestic alchemization?

Don't make me laugh. You aren't worthy to make the attempt against one of noble birth. Cut your teeth on the yellow blooded, and perhaps we will talk. But if you truly do have no regard for your life, take those spindly, weak little human legs [Obvious cracking of knuckles] and walk towards the main street between Freyr and Freya. I will meet you outside Black and Blue...

And make you just that.

[Marisa laughs, loud and high. She doesn't need magic to take down an overconfident buffoon like this guy.]

Yellow blooded? Hah! Try yellow bellied, ze! You don't know alchemization until you've tried a nice hearty batch of my mushroom stew! I've faced gods, demons and princesses from the moon! You don't scare me!

I accept your challenge, little troll! I'll teach you not to underestimate us humans!

[Oh, that got a little laugh from him. He liked that way she'd spoken of Sollux right there. Directions came up on her screen while he sneered.]

Don't disappoint me, human.

...Eh? Really? Well, okay then.

[She pauses, frowning. She clearly hasn't grasped that muttering is picked up just as clearly as shouting yet.]

...Lotta youkai around here. Never seen a blue one before, ze.

[It's ok, he's so used to that. When your best friend in the world never had a chance to talk to people before, things like that become too commonplace to comment on.]

I- what? What does that mean? [Was he just insulted, or just mistaken for something he's not?]

Well a youkai is anything that isn't human, ze. Where I come from they're all over- and they're a real menace, too!

[She gestures madly, one hand creeping up on what could be believed, with a bit of imagination, to be a villager.]

You can just be minding your own business when BAM! Youkai comes up and eats your organs out, ze! 'Course, that doesn't happen too often anymore, not with the exterminations and all nowadays.

[She looks proud, smirking.]

And I happen to be a lead youkai hunter.

Not sure how much of it is really magic, and how much of it is just technology.

...Technology? What, you mean like all that garbage that turns up from the border?

[She blinks. The most advanced thing she can think of is an old radio tower...]

It's clearly mostly magic, just not the kind I know, ze! Anyway, who the hell are you and how did you get on the other side? How do I get to where you are, ze?

[The border?] What border?

[That aside, she keeps her face straight although this magic thing...]

Mah name's Rogue, but, other side of what?

[Marisa blinks. Sometimes she forgets that here, nobody knows about the border- although admittedly not many within her land know about it either.]

The Great Hakurei Border, ze! Basically it's this big border that keeps reality out and us in, at least as far as I know.

[She digs in her memory. Didn't that lazy shrine maiden tell her this once...?]

Things that aren't believed in anymore or are forgotten come in the border. That's how we get things like rabbits from the moon, flying ghost ships and other weird stuff. Sometimes along the border things like radio towers come in, although usually it's just smaller stuff.

[That certainly isn't a border that Rogue has ever heard of. If it keeps reality out, then what 'us' is it keeping in? That's a bit too impolite to ask though.]

You've actually got moon rabbits and ghosts ships where you come from?

[Skeptical look? Why yes, yes that is one.]

I never actually found out what was used to make these but I'm pretty sure it involves some soul magic.

Soul magic?

[Marisa seems thoughtful for a moment.]

How come, ze? I don't see anybody reaching into my soul though, I just see a bunch of images and words. Light and sound maybe, but not soul.

Oh no I meant is that soul magic is a small part of what makes that up. I'm not sure exactly what other sort of magics were used. I never gotten around getting more answers about the rest.

It could be a mixture of light, sound and water magic creating a looking glass that works both ways. My teacher back home, made something similar to it.

Huh, is that so? I wonder if they'd let us take it apart and find out...

Oh hey, by the way, who are you? You're the first person here to talk sense about magic, ze!

[She thrusts out a hand to the screen, trying to be friendly, but not quite realizing the awkwardness of the motion over video.]

[He's actually copies what she doing after blinking for a moment, thinking she was doing a special sort of greeting.]

[ Giles looks a little pained, but patiently dumping exposition is a talent of his. And if she normally works with magic, he's curious. ]

It only transmits your voice to, um, someone else, and theirs back to you. You have similar magic at home?
