Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! [A demure inclination of her head in place of a curtsy.] I am Lady Ninuka--Orfilia Ninuka, do forgive me. I'm such a silly thing, I do keep forgetting that my title serves no purpose here!

Which brings me to the reason I am addressing you, kind strangers. As I find myself with no title and no fortune, I am forced to seek lucrative occupation. I am adept in the art of conversation, serving tea, and possess several other skills befitting a lady of my former station.

[She very much doubts any of those skills will prove useful here, but she doesn't allow one iota of uncertainty to show as she smiles again.]

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

I can suggest the Tea Shop; perhaps waiting there. And besides, some clients enjoy a good conversation, after all.

[Oh, my, have the most delighted smile, Cabal. She isn't inwardly baring her teeth like she's about to jump for your throat at all.]

Herr Meissner! I had no idea you were here! I shall have to speak to Miss Barrow about why she failed to mention--oh, but. [Ninuka allows her brow to furrow in delicate consternation.] Perhaps my bracelet is broken? The name appearing is not yours.

[ I could lie and say that he's smiling back at her, except it's such a poor facsimile of a genuinely happy expression that calling it a grimace would be doing Cabal a kindness. ]

I stay out of Miss Barrow's business and she stays out of mine.

[ ha ha what wishful thinking that is ]

And is it? Perhaps because Herr Meissner is an identity I assumed for the duration of the trip. [ There is literally no reason to try to hide it anymore, after all. ]

[She knew that, of course, but like hell she's letting on.

The smile melts away, replaced by a look of surprise that might be just a touch overwrought. There's a glimmer of something in her eyes that looks like interest. Perhaps. It could be malice, but if it is she's hiding it well.]

A secret identity? Oh, how exciting! Are you a spy, then? Was the attempt on your life political? It would still be horrible, of course, but I was having such a difficult time fathoming why anyone would want to do away with such a charming man. Politics would wrap it up rather neatly, don't you think?

["Charming" in reference to Cabal ought to sound like sarcasm, it really ought to, but she sounds entirely sincere. Somehow.]

[ It is not that Cabal inherently regards the descriptor 'charming' aimed at him as sarcasm. No-- it would be much less insulting if it didn't seem so sincere, and he shakes his head once, as if attempting to clear some cobwebs.

He tries again, completely ignoring her questions: ]

[And the smile melts away. Ninuka averts her eyes from the bracelet and allows her bottom lip to tremble as she draws in a breath.]

That awful business with Herr Zoruk. It was so horrid--[she draws a handkerchief from her sleeve and dabs at dry eyes.]--I hadn't thought about it since arriving here.

[ Crying women have rarely done anything short of annoy him greatly, and her dabbing at dry eyes only manages to make his eyes narrow in suspicion. ]

Right. That. It all seems so long ago.

[ If Cabal had it his way, he'd never have to acknowledge anything that transpired on the airship again. As things stood.... ]

I'm sure you'll find an adequate job. One suited to your.. abilities, surely.

Y-yes, I suppose it does.

[She wants to ask how long Cabal has been here, what he recalls, find out if he knows just whose blood is on his hands. Ninuka stomps on the urge to push. She doesn't want to inadvertently tip her hand.]

You said you might have suggestions, Herr Meis--ah... Cabal? I would be grateful to hear them.

[ Oh, he is so, so suspicious. And right now? He's not doing an excellent job of hiding that suspicion on his face.

Well, the suggestions he'd had were rude and a little sassy, but he'll reel those back for now. ]

There are tea rooms. You could serve at one of those, if your delicate sensibilities would allow.

[Whoopsie-daisy, let's not make the necromancer wary of us, shall we? Ninuka lets out a rather wet-sounding little laugh to maintain the appearance of being just on the verge of tears.]

Oh dear. That's two for the tea rooms, I suppose I really must look into them now. [Her brow furrows with genuine curiosity, or at least, as genuine as she can ever achieve.] And yourself, Herr Cabal? Have you taken up employment?

I hardly need it.

[ Which is a big fat lie. ]
