...I think I already know the answer to this, but please answer me directly and honestly.  When a traveler disappears entirely - not the kind where they lose their bracelet and turn grey like the parts of the city with no color - does that mean they've gone back to their own world?

Of course. Appearances are everything. But you're right about lying to us. They're certainly not going to win anyone's loyalty or cooperation that way.

The only reason most of the people here are fighting for the city is for everyone else who can't. We don't have a choice.
