Eight ★ Video

[Draco Malfoy has absolutely no reason to be outside right now. His hands are both still cut up pretty badly, he's fighting off a cold, and to top things off…

…well. He lost Jade Harley. Sort of. Jade sort of lost herself by leaving her bracelet on his bathroom counter. So today Draco's out and flying around the city of Asgard, Jade's bracelet in his pocket and bundled up against the cold. It's only when he's outside of his room that he really notices all of the lights going off in the city, twinkling against the darkness. He stops long enough to examine a few displays of light, raising an eyebrow.

It really must be close to Christmas then. Fantastic. Just one more thing to remind him of things he doesn't want to think about. Christmas reminds him of home, and lights remind him of a certain girl with long blond hair that he can't seem to stop thinking about. Ridiculous. After a few hours of flying back and forth hoping for some sign of Jade, anything that might indicate she's around, he gives up and lands to head into the Great Library if only for a distraction and maybe to pick up a few books to help with his current research for potions.

…and thus he finds himself curled up in a chair fifteen minutes later, trying to warm up and staring at a book in his hands. It's a small book, worn out and old in appearance. It's also a book he most certainly wasn't expecting to find here in Asgard, but then again it made sense. Why wouldn't the gods pull things from their own worlds to entertain them? When he turns on the bracelet's video feed, he's casually flipping through the book, reading and mumbling to himself. He's holding the book gingerly as though it's hard to bend his hands around it, but his eyes are narrowed in concentration.]

Babbity Rabbitty will never not be a strange name, and that's saying something [Flip. Flip. Flip.]

Granted, this shouldn't be a surprise. [And he looks up then, facing the camera.]

Here's a new question for anyone awake, something a bit lighter than the last. [Which he's still pondering on, thank you. His wall of notes may be folded up and in a box under his bed, but he still references them quite a bit.]

With the lights all around the city and with the discovery of this book--[He lifts it up, revealing the title to be the Tales of Beedle the Bard]--do you believe that something as simplistic as a fairy tale can actually have some truth behind it? Or, in other words, what determines if they're made up or if they're based on real people and real events?

And before anyone asks, no, there's no motive behind this question. Just genuine curiosity. [Which as we all know is the biggest lie of them all.]

I admit, I would not mind reading your realm's version of the story if that is so.

Precisely because he does not possess magic. He's just King Arthur, whatever. He's still a Muggle, and it's still you and Merlin that we focus on. I wish I could find one of our texts about it, but alas. I'm lucky I found what I've found.

A Muggle? What does that mean? I never heard this word before.

[ and if she'll use it to insult Arthur, which she will, she wants to know the meaning. ]

It's a word our kind use to describe those who aren't wizards or witches. Non-magical people.

They are all called the same, Muggles?

And do your people hide from them? Hide their magic?

Yes, unless it's a person who's born into a magical family and doesn't have magic at all. That's a Squib.

[Ah. Yes. The Statute.] We have for centuries, yes. If we're in the presence of Muggles we have to keep everything to a minimum, if only because it's a right pain in the arse to try and modify everyone's memories so that they don't realize magic's real. [And other reasons, but those are more complicated.]

They do not know there are those with magic among them?

[ How curious. ]

Those in my realm know there are those of magic but since it is outlawed, they do not speak of it much.

They don't know. We don't want them to know just in case things go as badly as they did centuries ago...

Centuries ago - what happened?

[ she wonders, she has to wonder, if he is speaking of the Great Purge. ]

What do you suppose happened, Morgana? The Muggles started gathering us up and burning us at the stake. If it wasn't for that, they were busy using us to perform magic for them for stupid reasons, and if it wasn't for that, many Muggles were forcing our kind to teach them magic, if you can believe that.

So in…1688? 1689? Somewhere in there, the law was written and the Statute was passed a few years later. Once it was signed, we all went into hiding and started forming our own communities of our own kind. The Statute basically says that the Ministry of Magic was responsible for hiding all of the magic in the country. That means that if a dragon's flying around? The Ministry has to get involved and Obliviate the Muggles who may have seen it. There's a lot of other clauses and notations in the Statute but that's the gist of it. [And he won't go into his family history about it, if only because while everyone else may know about it, he doesn't.] Of course it became a bit harder when our kind started breeding with Muggles and half-bloods and mudbloods started coming about.

I hoped -

[ that it might not have been the same, that perhaps, by chance, it might be different. A fool's hope, a child's hope. ]

Why hadn't they rebelled? Took control for those who burned them and forced their gift to become something to hide like a disease? Why did they not go to war against those Muggles who forced them into hiding?

[And then comes the very, very long pause.]

...we're in the middle of the second Wizarding War, actually.

A war.

[ Good, she wants to say; even though it's cruel, even though wars are terrible. ]

And your odds?

My side's odds, or my personal odds?

Both, Draco Malfoy, if you do not mind humoring me.

[Nope. That's getting a filter right then and there, thank you very much.]

...right now I think my side's winning, but my chances of survival are diminishing every day. So what that says for my side I can't be quite sure.

Why? If they are winning, can they not keep you safe too? whoever leads them should do at least so much for their people.

My family and I are merely being used as pawns. [He knows that much.] We serve our purpose until he's won the war, and then he'll be done with us as punishment. [He's not sure why he's sharing all of this with Morgana of all people (mostly he feels it's inappropriate, not to mention embarrassing), but it's probably because she may have a general idea of what he's saying.] My father used to be one of his most loyal servants. My aunt is, arguably, his most loyal servant. But the real thing is that after he's won, I've a feeling he won't need any of us. He likes to work alone.

Then you are leaderless, for he is no leader.

[ it bothers her, that her side would be led by someone who would dispose of the very same men and women he supposedly fights for. She bites her lip. ]

I hope your people will see the days of a better leader, Draco Malfoy. I wish for you the same thing I wish for my own kin. Safety and protection.

It depends on who wins the war, Morgana. It really depends on that. There's one who's supposedly got the capability of stopping him, but we'll see if that works out. [Which leads him to wonder...] Are your people not safe and protected?

My people are being executed and burned and persocuted by the day, Draco Malfoy; by a - muggle king, if you'd like.

Then why aren't your people stopping him?

They are, as much as they can. They fear for their children and their wives and so they tend to choose - secretive ways of action.

[ she offers him a mirthless smile. Sadly they all seem to go for Arthur rather than Uther; go figure. ]

They are leaderless. There is no one to stir them to fight.
