[It's almost like sophie's getting a little used to making these little videos. or at least she's getting better at directing her bracelet at her face without looking ridiculous. she does, however, look a bit nonplussed.]

I received an interesting message on my bracelet, recently. It seemed to be from the gods, informing me that I had been chosen as the leader of a newly created Watch for Hel District.

Given that this is the first I've heard of it, perhaps assembling this Watch is up to us as well. But it seems unlikely that I'm the only one who received such a message.

Perhaps we should start. Regardless of whether I trust the gods, or how far, it seems a wise idea regardless. Did anyone else get a similar message? Would anyone be willing to help? According to the message, we aren't meant to be soldiers, only watchers for the unusual or trouble lurking.

I talked to someone else who got that sort of message, Sophie-san! But I don't know much else.

I'll count that as reassuring, then, whether or not I exactly understand the reasons for this particular choice.

Did the message come with any specifications?

It sounds like a patrol intended to watch the district for signs of infiltration, not to fight. There's precious little in the way of specification. You can read it if you'd like, although I'm not sure how to send it to you.

I'll come visit. If I'm lucky, I'll collect your student on the way.

[It's not too much longer that there is a knock at Sophie's door. True to his word, he collected Connor on the way.]

Sophie-san, are you in?

[she opens the door for them, eyes widening in brief surprise at Connor. who'da thunk.]

Ah, come in.

[He grins and gives her a little wave.]

Conan didn't tell me my teacher's name. Hey.

Perhaps he was being clever.

[but she waves back before stepping out of the doorway. her room is pretty much as spartan and bare as if no one was living in it, but there are a few sets of winter clothes in the closet and some basic toiletries on the dresser. she sits down on one end of the bed, then takes her bracelet off and offers it to Conan]

Please, make yourselves comfortable.

[That they know each other isn't a surprise -- Hel is not the most crowded Welcome Hall out there. That they know each other and are friendly is a relief -- Conan has a dim opinion of most of Hel's inhabitants.]

I don't need to do introductions then? That's easy -- although with Sophie-san's new responsibilities, maybe she'll need some time off ... ?

[These emo feral children have themselves together a little more than that. For now anyway.]

Mm, we'll see. I'm not worried about time off yet. We can cross that bridge if I'm completely busy.

[Connor has sat down far enough away on the bed so as not to be in Sophie's personal space, and is looking at them curiously. Conan fetched him to come here, he didn't see the video.]

New responsibilities?

Sophie-san got a message from the gods! She's been asked to lead a watch in Hel.

Ne ... can we see the message?

For some unfathomable reason.

Mm.

[she takes her bracelet off and offers it to Conan.]

Lead a watch...? Are the giants invading already?

They've attacked the city four times now. Five if you include the camping trip.

[Conan's reply is absent -- he's analysing the god's message. Unfortunately, there's very little to be gleamed from it that Sophie hasn't already shared with them and he passes it back.]

Have you had much interest in the watch?

A few people responded, but only one is showing definite interest so far. We'll see, I suppose. It's not as though I'm asking for soldiers. Rather the opposite.

How'd you get chosen, exactly? If you don't mind telling.

I haven't the slightest, to be honest. It's not anything I volunteered for, and I'm no leader at home.

Just like them to make decisions for us without even mentioning it.

One of the Lokis said something about a Watch, and I know Freya already has a leader, too.

Gods will be gods, I suppose.

Then it really is happening. Are you from Freya?

They're all meddlesome. Don't they get tired of messing around with people?

[That's a rhetorical question.]

That's right. I'll be helping out with Freya district's watch, too.

Interesting! So we're forming citizen watch groups?

That seems to be the case.

[thinking - hey, this is a chance to actually have a little fun, without people complaining!]

So we are expecting an attack soon.

Or at least they want us in readiness.

I take it that you're interested.

Indeed!

Do you know if they have one for Loki house?

The representative for Freya District has already made himself known, while it would seems I have been elected to lead efforts in Freyr District.

[Just don't ask him what the qualifications were, he hasn't figured those out yet.]

Ah, I suppose I missed the Freya leader's announcement, then.

I've no idea why they chose me, but... [she shrugs] There's a lot of things that happen here that just seem beyond understanding.

I'm Sophie, incidentally.

Eyes Rutherford. Regardless of the reasons they have for electing us, we are still left with the responsibility of drawing plans and recruiting efforts for watches just the same.

That is certainly so. It will be an interesting proposition, considering that I'm recently arrived.

If you have only recently arrived, that would perhaps make me the one who has been here the longest among those who have been elected to organize the watch.

Mm, I arrived just shortly before the burning sickness. How long have you been here?

That would be since they first began to bring in Travellers.

Ah. I'm sorry.

That means you may have a better idea of how to go about this than I do, though. Have you had any success recruiting?

Don't be. I have not yet placed any efforts into recruitment beyond attempting to contact the other district leaders. I believe it best for everyone to know of one another and begin efforts from there, rather than to run into complications after having already established plans.

I had hoped that others would respond as well, but so far you are the only one.

And had no one responded, what would you have done?

Contacted those attempting to raise the actual Guard, as they seem to have peoples' ears to a greater extent. And worked on my own to raise a a Watch within Hel, if it came to that.

And now that you have found yourself not alone, what course of action do you intend to take?

[This is an indirect way of saying he's open for suggestions.]

I'm not sure. As I said, I'm not precisely the most obvious choice for this. I don't know whether to think that the lack of contact is a lack of interest or the fact that the others chosen are all inexperienced too. Each district certainly can each do this alone.

[He usually assumes either a lot of people, or nothing at all.]

Have you considered telling Hel you do not feel yourself to be a good choice for this? Or even seeking out the help of the one you felt to be of more experience?

[that earns him a funny look. she never actually considered bailing on the responsibility, even if it's weird and she didn't ask for it]

I'm fairly sure that if the gods cared for my opinion on the issue, they would have asked before now. It's not an insurmountable task. A large, united force would be nice, but a few people are all that's necessary.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't. Hel has rarely made her presence known thus I do not know if she is more amicable toward Travellers than some of her other peers.

Would you rather work by yourself in this instance, then?

Mmm, I don't think sympathetic or amiable are really qualities I'd ascribe to her.

...and honestly, I'm not sure I really want to invite more attention from the gods. This is more than sufficient.

It's not that. [but she pauses for a moment, to think about what it really is] I would rather not do this alone, but I will, if that's what becomes necessary. It would be better to work together, but if people are reluctant... [a small shrug.] I shall endeavor to make it work regardless.

... You are not alone in these efforts, if you would want my help in at least keeping communication between this district and Freyr.
