Act five: A worried homecoming. [Video]

Hey, are you alright? Did you get sick? Do you need anything? Because I know you're not the kind of person to ask for help, so I'm going to remove the need for you to do so.

[He frets for a few minutes before sending this her way and finally decides on something brief, to the point and hopefully not too desperate sounding. He's actually really freaked out but he does his best to compose himself before hitting 'Record'.]

Hey, Hanako. I know you're probably not interested in hearing from me right now and that's fine - I just need to know if you're OK. A simple yes or no is fine. I.... um. Yeah. I hope you're alright. Even text is OK.

....did... I say something wrong?

[Her face had gone red and she was fidgeting, but not in a happy seeming way. No, she looked anxious.]

[Satellizer shook her head quickly and kept her gaze averted.]

N-no, just... felt uneasy for a moment... food must be settling bad.

[Best excuse ever.]

[...he's not buying it.]

Uh-huh. You know, I'd appreciate it if you'd just tell me if I did. You haven't eaten much of anything and you looked nervous, not nauseous.

[Satella looked away and sighed.]

Just... bad memories is all... I...

[No, she didn't think she was ready to divulge a bit more for her background... or is she? Maybe a bit more coaxing could do it.]

Don't worry about it... okay?

But I do worry. That's what we were just talking about, right? You've given me an opportunity to vent so if I said something that triggered that sort of a reaction then it's only fair I give you an opportunity to do the same.

[His voice was gentle - not at all demanding.]

[That was the problem though wasn't it? Having others worry about her had only brought her misfortune and pain in many different ways. How could she convey that message without having to disclose her past?]

It's... a bit hard to explain.

I apologize, I didn't mean to worry you Hisao.

Hard to explain is fine. We've got all night and I'm all ears. You've listened to me whine more than enough so I think it's only right I give you the opportunity to get some of this stuff off your chest.

[He quickly ate the last of the meal she'd prepared before setting it aside and folding his hands on the table, all ears.]

And you don't need to apologize, by the way - like I said, I care about you and I'd be a pretty useless friend if I didn't get a little worried every now and then, right?

[She visibly flinched at the words and looked away. After a few moments she sighed and shook her head.]

It's those words... [She replied finally as she looked thoughtfully into the distance.]

They have been spoken to me in the past... from people I used to trust and... from some that I didn't.

Those words end up being a thorn on my side when... well... when they eventually do something to betray me.

[So, that was it. 'I care about you'. She'd been betrayed by people who cared? Or people who never cared used those words on her as leverage to gain her trust.]

Well then, I'd better just make sure I don't do that to you, then.

[He shifted to catch her line of sight.]

I'm not going to betray you. I promise.

[He drew a little cross over his heart with his index finger.]

My mother was one of them... [She said instinctively without thinking. Sure it had hurt... her allowing things to happen to Satellizer because of her fear of getting thrown on the streets but... Satellizer had still forgiven her mother and yet the sting of betrayal was still ever present.]

If she did so... and some other close others...

[She paused, not wanting to state that she would never trust again.]

It's just hard Hisao...

[Her own Mother? His eyes went a little wider at the admission, though he decided to err on the side of prudence and not ask for details.]

I'm sure it is. But I don't give promises lightly and I don't give up on friends.

[If he could stay good friends with someone who tried to chop him slowly into two seperate portions, really, what could Satella possibly ever do to turn him away?]

If I have to earn your trust, I'll do it. Even if it takes a year, or two, or ten - assuming we're here that long anyway - I'll do it.

[Satella offered a weak smile, that's about as much as she could do at the moment.]

I... well thank you.

[She didn't want to get her hopes up, she really didn't but... well maybe this time it'd be different. They were in a different world no?]

It's nothing to thank me for - that's just how friends work. I mean, I trust you. I've told you things about myself that very few people get to hear. One day, hopefully and if I earn it, you might trust me the same way.

I hope so too...

[Satellizer felt a little bad, keeping him in the dark like that. But it was hard to come out of your shell when you had been shoved into it forcefully so many times.]

Well, if it never happens then it's my own fault and that's all there is to it.

[Satellizer nodded and remained silent. There really wasn't much she could do to convince him to not bother or any of that sort of thing but maybe... just maybe it'd be different this time?

Oh who was she kidding, that's what she has said in the past as well...]

Hey, stop looking so worried.

[He ducked into her field of vision and gave a small wave as if he was greeting her.]

You know, usually, when someone tells you they want to work that steadfastly at earning your trust, it would be cause for at least a little smile.

[The simple action did bring a small smile to her face and she looked away.]

A-Alright, alright I'm fine now then. [She replied, small smile still on her face.]

Thanks.

There we go, that's better.

[He wasn't sure how genuine the smile was, or how much difference he'd made, or even how 'fine' she really was. But he'd take it at face value for now.]

[Satellizer sat her plate down once she was finished and gathered up her things. She'd wait till he was done with his before doing the same so she could go clean the dishes.]

[Hisao was set to foil your plan, unfortunately Satella. He saw her gathering her things together, and heing he was done, he started picking things up.]

I'll take care of the dishes - you cooked, after all.

[Funnily enough, she wasn't about to complain, not this time anyways. She was too exhausted emotionally to bother arguing and simply nodded her head with a small smile.]

Thank you then Hisao, that is very kind of you.

It's nothing. I do a lot of dishes in Sigyn house so it's becoming second nature for me.

[Because he cooked a lot and because some others didn't clean their own dishes when they were done with them and he felt better about using the space when it was clean so he'd generally take care of those before making anything.]

[Satellizer nodded and relaxed in her chair.]

Hope you at least enjoyed it. I'm glad you came by.

[Hisao held up his plate so she could see - it was completely clean.]

I think you can see for yourself that I loved it. You've gotten very good!
