[The feed lurches disconcertingly. Sheets, ceiling, a rather plain wall, a stack of books, all follow each other in rapid and confusing succession until with an intake of breath, the flailing stops and the feed settles into a child's hand grasping the edge of that sheet; the shadow of a sitting up figure projected onto the wall beyond.]

... back here. A dream?

[Too vivid, too real for that. The shadow shifts, hand going to its head as a deep breath is taken. It's a hard transition to make, almost feeling like he's losing Tokyo and everything there all over ag--]

What the--

[The bracelet gets jolted wildly as Conan explores his hair. It gets in the way and is roughly discarded onto the bed, giving a much clearer view of a pale seven-year-old, methodically working his way through his fringe -- what's left of it. There's a patch been shaved off either temple, and something taped onto it with medical tape.]

Doesn't hurt -- a sensor? But that should mean --

[Not wasting any time, Conan slips out of the bed. He's been dressed in a man's shirt, as big on him as a hospital gown, a fact which gives him a moment's pause, but he's undeterred, rolling up the sleeves before turning to pick up his bracelet again -- and making another discovery. What he thought was a bed was a --]

[Conan turns to look at Sherlock, standing in the door way, smartphone in hand. Conan doesn't bother with a greeting, making his unsteady way over to snatch at the smartphone. Sherlock lets him, expression simply distant.]

Monitor higher brain functions ... ? Ha, there's an app for everything.

[Sherlock might be looking as unamused as ever, but a new face makes it's way around the door, with an expression that is clearly more welcoming.]

Conan! You're finally back with us?

John's glad. He was complaining that you were unsanitary.

[Conan's clearly not sure how to react.] Why the coffee table? Couldn't you have monitored me from my room -- o-oi-oi!

Don't get excited -- your bracelet. [Ignoring Conan's protests, Sherlock's casually taken hold of his arm and is reaching for the button that will end the feed.] You're broadcas--

[And cut.]

I don't think so. [Crossing one leg over the other and propping the notepad on her knee like a secretary.] I don't remember it.

Let's see ... there was a suicide -- well at the time, it looked like a suicide in the Detective Agency Bathroom! Uncle was called to meet his client at a coffee shop, and while we were waiting for them, the apparent suicide took place. It looked like Kashitsuka-san, the client, had been set upon when she reached the Agency by a man who wanted to extort the location of her dead brother's locker from her ... so we decided to take her home to make sure we was safe! But there was a weird smell when we entered her apartment like someone had died there and when she left hurriedly while we were still visiting, I thought that was weird so I went with her! We were driving in her car and I was pretending to be asleep, and that's when I came to Asgard! That was [date.] The suicide would be in the papers, but not the fact it was really a murder. Got that?

[She seems to be writing for an inordinately long time, given how fast she writes, but the reason will be obvious when she holds up the notepad for his inspection - all the information is there, immaculately organized in note form, in both Japanese and Asgardian. It's a habit she's formed, ever since her maps, and she can explain it if asked about it.]

[Conan nods, quickly scanning the notes.] Perfect. Okay, let's see --

When I was back, I just opened my eyes and I was there in the car with Kashitsuka-san -- of course, I knew by then her name was really Urakawa and that she'd taken Kashitsuka's name when she killed him, in order to get into his apartment and try and track down his colleagues -- Kashitsuka, the dead guy hidden in the apartment and a third person were bank robbers who'd killed Urakawa's fiancee in their robbery. I confronted her with this, and told her I had a way to find the third person -- but if I helped her she had to turn them and herself over to the police. She agreed, and we found the last robber -- only I wasn't counting on her being armed. I was taken hostage -- for real this time -- but Occhan [the extremely casual term for 'Uncle' slips out unintentionally ] showed up with back-up and somehow it turned out all right! I think that made the papers as 'Sleeping Kogorou turns tables on tricky villain!' And 'Spectacular End to Horrific Bank Robbery!'

Call me paranoid, but I still don't trust a language that I learned in a split-second without any teaching. It was put into our heads somehow, and I feel like it could be go away or be taken away, too.

[She goes back to writing, smiling a little darkly at the headlines - she remembers the splashy, sensational headlines about the "Black Monster."]

Okay, I've got it all. Do you want to go now, or is this good enough for today? [It's just a guess, but she thinks Conan will want to go right away.]

Wait -- I should give you the latest headlines too. Um -- well, Ran-neechan, Sonoko-neechan and Sera-san thought they found a serial murder case, but it was really a natural death and a robbery ... that would have occurred on [date] and it would be a small paragraph in the local news or an orbituary -- Takaichi-san, a worker at a near-by construction site. Come to think of it, three robbers being subdued by three high-school girls and a kid might have got a headline ... but then again, Ran-neechan does that a lot, so maybe not ...

Ah, I got it! The murder of Katsumoto, the head of a really big publishing firm should definitely be in the news! That was just last weekend -- uh, I mean [date]. There was a big scandal involved, so the papers would be all over it!

[She dutifully gets back to writing, and a few minutes and a flipped page later, she's got it all. She glances up curiously, eyebrows raised - now?]

[Conan holds out his hands for the notebook. He scans it, nodding in satisfaction.]

You did a really good job, Nakama-neechan! Now ... I guess we need to sign it.

[Getting a pen, Conan writes 'Day 69. I hereby record that this is an accurate account of the events that took place while I was asleep. Edogawa Conan.']

Your turn! [The notebook is passed back to Nakama.] You just have to say that you agree that you've written everything down just like I told it to you.

[She gives him an odd look, but follows his instructions and tries to duplicate his official-sounding style as much as possible. Then, again, she holds it up.]

Good?

Good. Now, I'm going to give it to John-san or Sherlock-sensei to keep safe! One moment -- ah, sorry Nakama-neechan! I invite you over, but then decide to go to the library ... ah! My books will be all overdue now!

It's not every day I get to be part of a case. [One of her rare flashes of humour, with a small smile.] I think they'll understand if you explain... they must know it happens now and then.

[It might be a joke, but it's a moment before Conan smiles -- Haibara accuses him of getting people involved in things, but it's a surprise to realise she might have a point.]

I guess so ... my bad! I won't be a minute ...

[He disappears down the hall.]

[Given that the last case was a murder investigation, she's much more eager about this one, but she just stays seated and keeps sipping at her orange juice while she waits for him. Part of this is because of the skirt - she hates moving around in them, always feels like they're on the verge of flipping up and flashing the world her secrets, so she'll stay sitting as long as possible while she's in one.]

[When Conan comes back, he's lost the notebook but has gained a stack of library books, his backpack, but a coat as well. You'll be pleased to note that the second book down is Anne of Green Gables, Nakama!]

Sorry about that -- ready to go?

Sure. [She stands up, wondering if they should wash the glasses first, but settles for taking them to the kitchen and rinsing them out for now. No need to leave a mess for his housemates.

Then she reappears, smoothing down her skirt and smiling a little at the sight of Anne of Green Gables.] Did you like it? [She nods at the door, indicating that they can walk and talk.]

Mm! I wasn't sure about it, but I can see why it's considered a classic -- there's a lot in there!

I can see why Nakama-neechan likes it!

That's why I just told you to read it. If you try to describe it, it can sound a bit... mushy. But it's not, it's got a lot of good messages about acceptance and being yourself.

[Conan gives Nakama a side-long glance at that -- she hasn't been talking to Merlin, has she? But on reflection, he's pretty sure that Nakama knows that he's being himself when they hang out.]

Mm! There's more books in the series, right?

There are, but that's the one I read over and over again. I couldn't tell you as much about the others.

[Then, suddenly, she bursts out:] Your books are frustrating! The end is always so complicated, I never figure it out!

[Sorry, Nakama! It's not that Conan's unsympathetic but your bluntness is --

Well, the snort as Conan tries to smother the knee-jerk laugh is very unattractive.]

It isn't funny! [Indignantly. She still hasn't been trained well enough in the fine art of friendly teasing.] It's not that I don't like them, but I work so hard, and then everything turns out to be wrong.

[And that reaction is so very Nakama that Conan's has a moment of nostalgic fondness.]

I missed Nakama-neechan's way of always trying her hardest! But you know, the fun of mystery novels is that you can't solve them -- that's how you know the author's good!

[She stares at him in disbelief for a moment, then deflates completely.] You mean... it's not like a puzzle? You're not supposed to figure them out?

Well, you can read them like that, but if you do, you've got to be prepared for being wrong! And the mystery genre doesn't work like real life cases -- having a water-tight alibi makes you more suspicious in a book!

Well, I'll probably like the rest of them better now. [She looks like she's feeling a bit foolish.

Then she glances down at him curiously.] Why do you like them, if it's so different? Doesn't that mean they're getting it wrong?
