An idol cannot be defined in a simple phrase, I'm afraid, no more than a person.

But I'm not looking for anything so metaphysical, and we can still say that a person is an individual who walks, talks, and breathes, if we're trying to establish a broad definition.

That would neglect the presence of other individuals.

But you may also think of idols as ones who appeal to the hearts of an audience.

Maybe so. But precision of language is wasted when a general concept isn't already mutually understood to begin with. If you worry so much about potentially excluding a handful of fringe cases that you can't define a term broadly to begin with, communication gets more more complicated than it should be.

Complication can be readily cleared with a listening ear.

If you can reliably agree upon a certain degree of cultural literacy, then in that case I would agree.

In a place like this, with the variety we've seen here thus far? No, not so much.
