[Sam is sitting in a chair in the library, surrounded by all of the books, and he looks somewhat tired, but in good spirits. For the most part. Save for that whole 'he definitely hasn't slept' thing.]

Hey -- I think this thing's on... anyway, I'm Sam Winchester.

[Ordinarily he'd never give out his full name, seeing as they're on the run from the Leviathan and all that, but he's ascertained the big bads aren't around -- so a little honesty couldn't hurt, especially with what he's about to ask.]

Nice to meet everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of answers to some questions -- you don't have to, and it's obviously not obligatory, but I'd appreciate it.

First, how many of you have any kind of supernatural ability that was taken away when you got here? It doesn't matter what it is -- telekinesis, the ability to fly -- if anything changed, I'd like to know. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but knowing what changed is important in knowing how we all got here in the first place.

[And, more importantly, how to get out.]

Second, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find some chalk and some spices. Specifically, rosemary, allspice, or nutmeg. Salt would be good, too. I know there's probably a grocery store or something like that around, but any pointers would be great. And, uh --

[Sam pauses before clearing his throat, thumping his pen against the table for a few seconds before continuing.]

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a coat with a lot of blood on it, what would you do to get it out? And I need to know where to find non-blood-stained clothes that'd fit a normal-sized human being. ... hypothetically.

It depends on what kind of television set-up you have, but for basic cable, the image is broken down into signals that are transmitted through the air and picked up by digital network dishes. Kind of like throwing a baseball and catching it in a mitt -- it goes back and forth between different broadcasting stations in order to deliver the programs to the right television sets.

[There are a lot of words he's never heard before here, and it probably shows in his expression. But even if what exactly makes the signals is still clear as mud (and is baseball like kemari or something?), it helps...a little.]

And to think that yesterday, I thought the arquebus was a true wonder of technology.

[Sam is quiet for a moment as he places the word before he looks vaguely sheepish.]

Yeah -- I'd guess you wouldn't know what a TV is, huh -- I can try to hook it up for you, if you want.

[He's wearing sixteenth-century Japanese clothing. Definitely not up on the times, this one.]

I don't think I'll have any shortage of things to keep my attention, so it's hardly critical...but if it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate it!

It'll get me out of the library.

[He hasn't left this place since he found it. Any information is better than none at all.]

So it's not a problem.

If you have to hole up somewhere, I think the library is as good a place as any, if not better.

It got rid of the headache, that's for sure.

How wide is the library's scope, anyway?

Pretty massive. If I can figure out how to send directions, I'll send them over. It's in the Odin sector of the city.

They can be! But I suppose if everyone were smart, I might be out of a position in the first place.

[Sam almost argues that wars don't ever actually end, but he holds his tongue, for this once.]

Ending them is just as important as what I do. Probably more.

[Oh ho ho. Hanbei could write a book on His Thoughts On Ending Wars, and the philosophical debate of whether finally ending decades of petty civil conflict is worth the likelihood that it's finally going to end because Nobunaga introducing modern warfare to Japan might not leave anyone alive to fight it...but that's a topic for another day.]

It's probably a gross oversimplification to leave it at that, but...well, one can't lose sight of the forest for the trees, either.

[It's a nice proverb. Whether or not it works in practice, Sam isn't entirely sure yet.]
