[Sam is sitting in a chair in the library, surrounded by all of the books, and he looks somewhat tired, but in good spirits. For the most part. Save for that whole 'he definitely hasn't slept' thing.]

Hey -- I think this thing's on... anyway, I'm Sam Winchester.

[Ordinarily he'd never give out his full name, seeing as they're on the run from the Leviathan and all that, but he's ascertained the big bads aren't around -- so a little honesty couldn't hurt, especially with what he's about to ask.]

Nice to meet everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of answers to some questions -- you don't have to, and it's obviously not obligatory, but I'd appreciate it.

First, how many of you have any kind of supernatural ability that was taken away when you got here? It doesn't matter what it is -- telekinesis, the ability to fly -- if anything changed, I'd like to know. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but knowing what changed is important in knowing how we all got here in the first place.

[And, more importantly, how to get out.]

Second, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find some chalk and some spices. Specifically, rosemary, allspice, or nutmeg. Salt would be good, too. I know there's probably a grocery store or something like that around, but any pointers would be great. And, uh --

[Sam pauses before clearing his throat, thumping his pen against the table for a few seconds before continuing.]

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a coat with a lot of blood on it, what would you do to get it out? And I need to know where to find non-blood-stained clothes that'd fit a normal-sized human being. ... hypothetically.

Yeah, I kind of already screwed that one up. He might have to deal with getting a new coat.

[And he pauses for a moment.]

Telekinesis, the ability to fly, reading minds, breathing underwater, teleportation -- anything weird or unnatural by normal human standards.

The streets are full of merchants, but like the maid they are faceless and grey. Will your friend be able to do without his coat?

[ A quiet hum. ]

I have never heard of that word before.

[ He means 'human'. No. Seriously. He means 'human'. ]

I'll figure something out.

[That's a no. 8 And Sam pauses for a second or two before blinking to himself.]

... which one?

'Human'. [ Simply. ]

Do you mean the race of Men?

[Ohhhhhh, Sam is definitely not in Kansas anymore.]

Yeah --

I'm guessing you have other races besides h -- men.

[ A small sound of assent. ]

There are many. There are the Elves, forever fair and strong; the Dwarves, the great smiths in their mines; the Istari, capable of the smallest to greatest types of magicks; the Ha- Hobbits [ he corrects himself ], half the size of Men and twice as brave of heart; and the orcs and Uruk-hai, long ago corrupted by darkness.

You are surprised.

No -- it's not that, I'm not surprised, we just call the same species different names in our world, that's all.

What names are those?

'Men' is a gender, in my world. Our species is called homo sapien -- human beings. Elves and dwarves don't exist -- or, at least, I haven't found them yet, but there are myths about them in old texts. Orcs, too.

I haven't heard of the others, though.

[ There's a contemplative sort of silence. ]

I presume then that women are the other 'gender', and they too belong to [ he pauses a little while, testing the words on his tongue before he speaks them ] 'homo sapiens'.

What of the Istari and the hobbits?

Exactly.

[Sam is a relatively patient guy. All of these people from other worlds are mostly fascinating to him.]

I've never heard of the Istari -- or hobbits.

Perhaps they simply exist in your world under different names, unknown to you. [ He might be teasing. Or serious. Who knows. ]

What creatures are there in your world?

They probably do.

[Easily enough. Sam leaves nothing to the imagination anymore. Nor does he use the word 'impossible'.]

We have a little bit of everything. Angels, demons. Werewolves, vampires -- a slew of monsters, a lot of superpowered sentient creatures, pagan gods...

[Leviathan.]

You have me at a disadvantage; all these are mere names to me, and I know not what they mean.

Big bad monsters in the dark, mostly.

[As a simple clarification, though Sam has a smile.]

If they appear only at dark, then you are truly blessed.

[ ... oh, dear. Another one.]

It's just a figure of speech. Some of them come out during the day, too.

Have you found any of them here?

Not yet.

I'm hoping it stays that way.

If their wish is for the reparation of this world, then I doubt they would bring monsters.

You never know.
