Romans 12:10 }{ VIDEO

[The scene opens to a rather ridiculous sight, as either Castiel or Jimmy--it’s hard to tell which, as they’re both in the frame--is pondering a somewhat beat up but still functional looking bike. That’s nothing particularly noteworthy, though; what stands out most is that said individual is wearing very improvised knee and elbow pads, made of what looks a combo of small pillows and duct tape.]

I don’t understand why this is a necessary skill.

[The voice gives it away; the perplexed and safeguarded speaker is Castiel, eyeing the bike with some level of suspicion as he directs his comment at his doppelganger.]

Because! [A girl’s voice rings from somewhere off-screen.] You’re finally old enough for a paper route!

[Jimmy busts up at the comment from off screen but calms himself in order to focus on the situation at hand.] Dammit Mary... [He checks the bike and its riggings to make sure it’s good to go. Once he gets in control of himself again he goes back to reassuring Castiel.]

Think of it as a right of passage. You’re protected, thanks to Claire. [He tries to hide his laughter and fails miserably, looking more like a kid that got caught with his hand in the cookie jar than anything else.]

I’m not afraid of injury.

[A bicycle isn’t scary... Really. But this just seems like a bad idea all around. Still, Castiel determinedly grasps the handlebars and then awkwardly tries to swing a leg over it, and manages to topple right over, bike and all.]

[Whatever the hell happens next is punctured by a-] Oh god, is he- [That dissolves almost immediately into unseen giggles throughout the rest of the scene.]]

[A tinier voice in the background makes a startled noise somewhere near the laughter that’s off camera.] Are you okay, Castiel?

[Jimmy reaches down to help Cas and the bike back up and grips the handlebars to help him find his balance.] He’s fine, sweetie. [Jimmy answers for him so they can get this show on the road.]

[Castiel glances back to give Claire a nod, unharmed aside from a few small scratches he dutifully ignores, intent on figuring this out. Jimmy holding the handlebars helps and he manages to actually get on the bike correctly, a foot on the ground for balance, the other resting awkwardly on the pedals. There’s a pause.]

What do I do now?

Just pedal, I’ll guide you. [A common lie every parent tells their child, but Jimmy grips the rubber on the bars tighter to reassure Cas. He still has every intention of letting go once he picks up speed.]

[Castiel gives Jimmy a clear ‘I don’t trust you’ look, but he does what he’s told anyway, beginning to pedal slowly, trying to figure out how he’s supposed to keep his balance and do at the same time.]

[Jimmy helps him along for a few feet until Cas starts getting the hang of it and picks up speed, he runs alongside him until it looks like he’s figured it out for the most part and then lets go.]

[Castiel manages great, if a bit wobbly, for approximately ten seconds, until he’s out of frame. A moment later there’s a massive crashing noise and what sounds like glass shattering.]

[Claire gasps and runs out of frame after her father who’s reassuring her that it’s okay and to remember her first time on a bike. Jimmy cuts the feed purposefully so he can help Cas back to his feet and pat his back for trying.]

No?

[How curious.]

Well, cycling is a novel and diverting sport. It's just as well to have a hobby while you're here.

I have other things to focus on.

[He's not at all convinced this is anywhere near as important a skill as Jimmy and Mary made it out to be.]

And what would those be?
ofthursday: (Halos and Harps [Uncertain/Angel])

[personal profile] ofthursday 2012-03-30 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything.

[But mainly a lot of things he doesn't want to talk about, like worrying about Sam's sanity and trying to find a way to defeat the Leviathan in their world. Also dealing with the gods here, training up his ability, compiling information, and the various other things that seem to be his duty here.]

Anything? That's -- rather a tall order.

But don't forget, a diversion is as good as a rest in some cases.

[He's an angel, and they're not made to rest--they don't sleep, and they're built to focus on a task until completion--so resting now that he has time and actual need to is something he's still not used to. Likewise with distractions.]

It is also a waste of time.

[He's not into the whole idea yet, clearly.]

Not at all! A break from a problem refreshes and rejuvenates the mind, so that when returning to the problem, you employ a fresher perspective and the work goes faster.

[The most suspicious of faces. He's not sure about this plan at all.]

You know the saying, all work and no play? That's why.

Granted, cycling might not be your thing, but if you can find an enjoyable past time that allows you to enjoy your rest time, I think you'll see the benefits in your more serious endeavours.
ofthursday: (My hands are empty)

[personal profile] ofthursday 2012-04-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No. I don't know that saying.

[Angel and all. But he considers the logic of the next statement for a moment.]

Maybe.

[He's still not sure how to go about this whole resting thing, though.]
the_good_doctor: (I should say something)

[personal profile] the_good_doctor 2012-04-02 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if the hobby is too difficult for you -- like riding a bicycle perhaps -- you're not going to feel the benefits. What's something you enjoy?
ofthursday: (Taking notes [Nerding/Planning])

[personal profile] ofthursday 2012-04-07 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
[He has to think about it for a moment.]

Reading.
the_good_doctor: (something to cheer him up)

Splendid. And admirable hobby.
ofthursday: (Making a deal [Interested/Considering])

[personal profile] ofthursday 2012-04-07 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[He tilts his head slightly at that answer, curious.]

What makes it admirable compared to others?
the_good_doctor: (chronologically or alphabetically)

[personal profile] the_good_doctor 2012-04-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, there are other admirable hobbies of course -- but reading enriches as well as relaxes the mind.

I do. Occasionally, I've even dabbled in writing.

Writing what sort of things?
the_good_doctor: (just crash here)

I've written up a few accounts of my friend Holmes' cases -- as London's only consulting detective his work is both for the public benefit and an education.
