[The video feed flickers to life, and there is a man with dark hair gazing at the "screen" for all to see. There is something decidedly serpentine about the incline of his head, the way his lips are almost curled into a snarl, exposing a flash of white teeth before he speaks.

The man's voice itself is low, surprisingly so, for such a face; almost as if there is the perpetual rumbling, the sound of gravel, at the back of the throat.]

Zok bein. Even my own tongue does not come to me as it should, as naturally as I breathe. Instead my mind is filled with the muddled words of this foreign language, and my body weak.

[He then scoffs – the dry, humourless kind that could pass as a hiss.]

Who encases me in this prison of flesh, rips my Voice from my throat and takes away my wings? These "gods"? Meyye. I know nothing of these so-called gods.

[Man, he's just a bundle of sunshine, isn't he?]

In defeat, I have done nothing to warrant humiliation.

If only we were all named with such meaning. It would make introductions so much simpler.

Your own name carries no meaning? [It's a difficult concept to wrap his mind around.]

Fenris... Is the name my master gave me. Little wolf.

[Something about the way he says it tells Alduin that Fenris isn't fond of the associations it brings up. But the World-Eater lacks the tact to not follow the line of conversation nonetheless.]

You speak as if it is a burden.

[ that's all right, fenris wouldn't know tact if it danced naked down the street in front of him though he's...attempting to learn some. ]

It is no more a burden than anything else Danarius left me with, tattoos burned into my flesh without consent and a past that dogs me at every turn.

[ aren't you happy you asked? ]

...It is of little consequence.

Danarius. [Another word that is enunciated, rolling of his tongue, because it is new to him.] Your master, then. Your words just now were... very heavy. [That is the only way he can describe it, that is the only proper way to describe it if you are a dragon.] It seems to be of much consequence to you.

He is not-- [ the abrupt cut of anger is stifled almost as soon as it flares. that's not fair, exactly, since he was rather misleading to begin with. ] Danarius is no longer my master. It is--a thing of the past and yet it...has proven more difficult to put behind me than I had realized. Perhaps that is the cause of--what weight my words may carry.

[No longer his master? Then that would explain his mention of ensuring his freedom, earlier in their conversation. Alduin finds something strangely ironic about all of it.]

Of course. Your freedom will come in its full form with time. All things come to an end; all burdens are temporary.

[Such is Alduin's philosophy; not always the brightest, but some might take twisted comfort in it. (Not that he offers the phrase for the sake of comfort in the first place, mind.)]

[ ...well. he certainly wasn't expecting to hear anything like counsel, or comfort. not from a self-professed destroyer. perhaps it's fenris's own peculiar mindset that leads him to draw an unexpected succor from the words.

in any case, it takes a moment for him to work out a reply. ]

That is... [ thank you? nope, can't quite spit it out. ] It is more difficult than I would have imagined, learning the way of--living freely.

[ maybe he wouldn't have admitted that normally but there was something settling about that philosophy. ]

Lok. The openness of the sky. Freedom. Dragons are created with the concept, embedded within. I cannot see what it difficult about freedom. [In other words, Alduin cannot relate. There are going to be a lot of things that he cannot relate with, here.]

[ lok. it's mouthed but he's learning, just... out of curiosity more than anything else. ]

You have strength enough that I imagine it would not ever have been a concern.

[ until...now. well. that's awkward. ]

If I had been born a dragon, I imagine we'd be having a very different conversation.

[A 'hm' from him.] And in a more fitting tongue. [Which leads in nicely to something he's been observing.] My language, it interests you?

[ whoops, caught in the act. well. it's not as though he's been doing anything embarrassing, just--not used to speaking about anything that interests him either. ]

It was a language of some power in your world, was it not?

[ he is interested in power. ]

I like the way it sounds.

[He doesn't mind terribly; though he isn't flattered by Fenris' interest in the dragon language, per se, it does inflate his pride somewhat. Because Alduin really needs more of that.]

It is power. It is our Voice, our Thu'um, that defines a dragon's strength. It is enough to tear the land apart.

[ shockingly, fenris isn't all that good to appealing to the egos of people around him. though he does spend a fair bit of time with one incredibly smug hawke. ]

The way you talk, it sounds as though breathing fire would be superfluous to this... Voice. I'm rather glad the dragon I faced was not possessed of that skill.

[It probably helps that Alduin takes every chance that he can get to twist a sentence's meaning to pander to his ego.]

There is more to a Voice of a dragon than yol. Than fire. [Though he's rather fond of that one, himself.] There are... many uses. It is a shame the dragons in your world remain unenlightened.

As long as I'm on the wrong side of their claws, I think I'd prefer it if they remained that way.

[ there's a subtle undercut of humor in that, though. what's there to laugh at if not your own potential massacre at the hands of dragons or...giant spiders. ferocious demons. ]

You sound like a far more versatile creature, however.

I am. No. [bitterness creeps into his tone] I was.

This form does not make fire rain from the sky, nor does it cast away my enemies in a single shout. [sardonic tone alert!] All this form does is bring "colour" to this world. Ridiculous.

[ ohh, talk more to him about the terrible things you can do. no, but it is rather inspiring. he finally knows what hawke was talking about with all that wanting to be a dragon speechifying. ]

I suppose they thought your original form more suited to destroying their world than saving it. Could you really cast your enemies back simply by shouting at them?

[ the things fenris would do with dragon powers... ]

[Fenris with dragon powers would be a bit frightening, to be honest.]

Speaking the right words, I could do that easily.

[ he would be the happiest dragon. first stop, the tevinter imperium! ]

That is...remarkable. A pity it cannot be demonstrated firsthand.

Yes. A pity. [His brow furrows a bit.] Though I will not stay resigned to this fate; I want back what was taken from me. My form and my mulaag. My strength.

[ he'd make his home on its ashes :) ]

Do you have a plan for taking it back? Without your strength, confronting a host of gods with unknown power could prove...ineffective.

[He makes a noise that sounds a bit like a growl, but it's actually just him taking this into consideration.] I wish to confront the gods of this world – I will not bite my tongue for their sake.

[Ineffective. This is the first time the word could ever be applied to him, and he hates it.] We will see where that may take me.
