[Feferi--in the soaking wet body of a squishy pink human she has just recently learned cannot, in fact, hold her breath for ten minutes, is sprawled out on the bank of the lake, still gasping for breath. There's a net nearby, just barely in frame, with a bunch of fish.]

Hey, whoever's in my body needs to come to the lake, okay? Grey skin, horns, fins, and you should see a symbol like this on my stuff! [She mimes drawing her symbol--the Pisces sign--in the air.] It's really important, so come right away!

[She pauses a moment to take another deep breath.]

So what else should I know about being a human, besides they can't hold their breath to save their lives?

I don't know. Gray skin, horns? Sounds like you're a troll. I've got no clue what it's like to be a troll, so... I'm not sure what to say about being human [Other than the fact that being in Eve's body was the closest thing Samantha had been to actually being human ever in her life.], other than that they're really fragile, so don't try and do anything crazy.

[Feferi nods.] I'm a troll, yup! You guys sure are squishy. How do you not get hurt all the time?

They. I say they because I'm not human, even if the girl's body I'm in is human. I'm only half human, and I spend most of my time with them, so I've picked up some crap over time.

They don't get hurt because they don't do crazy shit that would get them hurt unless they're trying to get on Jackass or something. And those people aren't long for the world.

[Feferi, interest piqued, perks up.] I didn't know you could be just half human! I guess I'll try not to get stabbed or anything. [She giggles.] Or dive into the lake anymore!

You can if your dad's a dick of a monster, and biologically viable with humans. [Ok, even she recognized that came off a little acridly.] Sorry about that. Yeah, there's ways. It probably depends a bit on how you have kids, honestly.

Stabbings are bad, but you should be able to swim. Most people swim.

I bet humans reproduce in some really weird, gross way. [She laughs like the thirteen-year-old she is, torn between not wanting to know and being morbidly curious, but decides not to ask.]

Oh, I can swim, but I can only hold my breath for like a minute in this body!

I'd say the whole process is pretty disgusting, yeah. I could tell you, but I'm going private if you want to hear about the birds and the bees, damnit all. So, do you trolls usually hold your breaths for longer than that? I'd say you want to keep it to about thirty seconds most of the time.

I don't think I really want to know. [It's probably better off that way. Human bodies are already weird enough as it is.]

I have gills at home, so usually I don't need to hold my breath at all! I have to hold it here, but I didn't know how long you could hold your breath was different for humans.

Do all of you guys have gills? I don't think I saw anything like that on Aradia or Kanaya, and it's making me wonder if you guys are all different somehow. And, you're pretty much right. You really don't want to know too much about that sorta thing. It's a mess.

Only sea trolls have gills! Aradia and Kanaya live on land so they wouldn't have any.

So, there's trolls, and then there's trolls, and then there's trolls. I guess that sort of makes sense, I suppose. It's still sort of weird, but I'm trying to convince myself you're all not just demons in another world or something. Old habits die hard, and the horns throw me.

Aliens are different from demons! [Thoughtfully:] I guess species who don't do a lot of space travel are kind of primitive about that sort of stuff, though.

Well, since demons aren't exactly from the earth themselves, it's not nearly as hard a mistake as you might think to make. They're from their own worlds, after all. Of course, that probably depends on the world.

If they're not from earth are you sure they aren't really just aliens?

Pretty damned sure. I'm half demon, and I've ... well, I've been to hell. It's not in space. It's... in the spaces between space, if that makes any sense.

[She perks up visibly.] You mean the Furthest Ring?

[She shook her head. Grabbing for a sheet of paper, she made a quick drawing. The physics of it was always really hard for her to understand, honestly. However, it seemed about right. She held the image that she'd drawn crudely for Feferi. Her finger tapped the parts outside the future and past cones.]

If the flat plan is the here and now, the three dimensional world, and the cone represents all the possible futures, and the cone below all of the pasts that could have been. Elsewhere's somewhere outside it. Hell stays there, where it isn't really in space as we know it, and it isn't a potential. It's too far out of what could have been, its own little pocket.

...at least, that's the best explanation I've ever come up with. It could be horseshit. It's just not... here.

[Feferi studies the image.] Are you sure it isn't anything like an infinite space untouched by the time or space of any universe?

Maybe... but the problem is that I'm not that sure that the Lucifer here's the Lucifer in my world, so there might be multiple hells like multiple universes. It's confusing.
