Hello everybody! Over the past few days a lot of people have asked me about Runic Magic, so I thought... Since I have the day off, if anyone would like to come learn the basics, I can teach them! I'll take breaks around lunch and dinner, but I'll come right back once I finish, so please feel free to come at any time if you are interested in learning!

[--And something seems to occur to her right then.]

We've gotten a lot of new people, haven't we...? If you don't know what Runic Magic is, it's a different type of magic from the powers the gods give you. Instead of drawing from the gods, it draws from the world itself. It can be used for all kinds of things, like conjuring bread or making your clothes invisible... things like that! And we're discovering more and more spells every day! Anyone can learn it, so if you'd like to give it a try, just come visit!

I'll be in the Grimoire's Sigil headquarters. It's right by the Draupnir Theater in Freyr-sama's district, so you can't miss it!

[And as promised, she can be found sitting at a table in the Grimoire's Sigil HQ, a book on Runic Magic spread open as she scribbles some new circles on a paper with plain ink. Nothing magical here - it's all just practice and half-thought up ideas.

...And a couple of cat faces if you actually look, but can you really fault a kid for getting distracted every once in a while during her studies? Either way, the moment she hears someone around she'll look up right away.]

Oh-! Did you come here for lessons?

...I dunno about lessons. But ...

[Kanji's standing in the doorway, looking an odd mixture of casual and tense - he's still not sure of himself. His hands are in his pockets, shoulders slumped, though that's probably not new - the one new thing that is noticeable, however, is that he's actually wearing glasses.

He smiles, a spot awkwardly.]

I was, uh, in the area... [Excuses.] I figured if you were talkin' about this stuff, I might's well see what was going on.

[...? Did he always need glasses...?]

That's fine! I was just looking over some of the runes we have already... Do you want to see, too?

[She gestures to the book in front of her. It does indeed seem to be full of various arrays, some arranged on circles, others on lines, and even a few in spirals.]

[Technically, yes. A bit. Thank a little favour he had to do for someone else for reminding him that it might be a good idea...]

Yeah, sure ... man. [He frowns.] This looks kinda complicated.

These are harder ones... I still have trouble with the spiral arrays a lot.

[Circles are just so much easier for her to grasp. But she'll quickly flip to some different pages, these ones with predominantly line and circle arrays. There's far less symbols attached to these ones; it's pretty obvious that they're a lot more simple.]

Here we go! These ones are a lot more basic. It took a while to discover all of them, but... I think if anybody was going to start out learning spells, these would be much better to begin with.

[ He's not really sure what he's going to learn, but it sounded better than sitting holed up in his rooms in Loki house, so here he is, indeed. He fidgets with his hands. ]

A-ah, yeah? But I wasn't even sure if I can learn something like that? It just seems sort of...

[ He shrugs a little helplessly, smiling. Something to distract him, surely. ]

I'm sure you'll get 'em.

[Seriously. If she's made it this far on sheer determination, how can't she?]

Right. So... what's goin' on?

Don't worry, anyone can learn this kind of magic! You don't have to have any special talent for it.

[She sure didn't back in her world. With a friendly smile, she'll start flipping through the pages of her book, settling on a page with far simpler arrays on it - mainly ones based on circles and lines as opposed to spirals and helixes and such.]

Do you want to maybe look through them first to see what they look like?

All of these symbols are letters in the alphabet they use here in Asgard. In order to make an array, you need to translate what you want into the proper words and arrange them onto a pattern. There's a lot of different kinds depending on what you want to do... I think the line and circle ones are the easiest, but it can even be in a spiral or a helix or a tree-shape.

Let's see... this spell here, [pointing!!] is the one I made for melon bread. I... I'm more used to circles, so whenever I make spells, I usually try to arrange them like that. [Her voice is a little sheepish.] But since I wanted to make melon bread with it, I used words that matched my idea of melon bread and wrote them on the circle.

Oh. Well, that's good.

[ He smiles faintly and sits across from her, looking up at the book. The symbols and little drawings there are already confusing. ]

We had magic where I was from but we used wands. So this ... looks a little different. It... er, may help if I see them? I don't know, really. Sorry.

[ He ducks his head. Well isn't this embarrassing? ]

I thought they looked like weird-looking letters.

[He thinks he recognises a few of the layouts just from seeing the things around, too, but that doesn't help too much.]

Makes sense, I guess. So ... that says stuff like 'tasty' or 'sweet'?

Sure! Here you go!

[She'll turn it so that he can see them properly and begin pointing at them as she explains.]

There's a lot of different ways to write them, but... All of the spells come down to what words you use. All of these symbols are actually just letters from the alphabet here. We come up with words that describe what we want the spell to do, and then we arrange them on a certain pattern.

These ones use line and circle patterns, see? [And sure enough, all of the words are either written in a line or a circle. Nifty!]

Yes, that's right! And the one I used for cinnamon bread [point point] uses some of the same words, too!

It takes a lot longer to learn the language and everything, but that's mostly if you want to make your own spells. If you just memorize the letters and how they're supposed to be arranged, you can use that spell even if you don't know what it means.

[ He looks to the book, and in some ways, it does make sense, as much sense as learning any spell back home might. ]

Oh, I see. That doesn't... I mean, it can't be so hard, right?

[ Well, until he has to do it himself, anyway. ]

[They've already spoken about this once, but now Bliss is finally getting a chance to visit. She's had one experience with runes, which was - well, interesting, but might have helped the gods out. It was definitely powerful, anyway, which convinced her that she should learn more.]

Hey, Hibiki. [She grins, her curly ponytail bobbing as she nods her head.] I figured it was about time I showed up and checked this out. I don't have any of my own ink yet, though, and Ryan said I might need to bring supplies. Is that alright?

Huh. [That makes sense so far...] Is there a dictionary of ... ancient runespeak somewhere or something?

I'm not really that smart, so... If I can do it, I'm sure you can too!

[That's... uplifting? Right?]

It also depends on if you want to make your own spells or not. We've collected a bunch of spells in here, so as long as you memorize the symbols and the order and write them correctly, you don't have to understand what they mean or anything.

[Once she realizes who it is, she gives a small wave.]

Don't worry about supplies! We mix a lot of our own paint and oil here, so there should be plenty to use! Though... it's probably good to practice with normal ink first.

[Gotta make sure those lines are nice and crisp!]

Do you want to get started? I thought it might be good to teach you how to write a spell we've already made instead of the alphabet first... [As that's more useful if you're trying to make your own spell.]

I'm not really all that smart, either.

[ He blinks, wide eyed. ]

I think I should probably just learn the ones already made. Last time I tried to make a spell on my own I nearly blew down my own house. Er.

[ Not that she needed to know that, but, well. ]

Uh-huh! It's right here!

[She reaches over and-- tadaaaa! It looks like she brought out a number of books relating to runic magic in preparation for the day, actually.]

Bl-blew down your--

B-but you were okay, right?

[Sorry, she'll get to answering that properly once she makes sure everything was safe because goodness that sounds awful!]

O-oh. Oh, merlin, no.

I mean -- yes -- er -- I was okay, but the house wasn't. I mean -- the room. I'm fine, I'm here and good. I just --

[ He blushes, hangs his head. ]

I just never did that again. It got fixed, but, er, yeah. Maybe... I shouldn't learn this stuff just yet, now that I think about it.

Oh, cool. [She's still a bit uncomfortable as she shuffles in, even with that warm greeting. She's come to do magic. Even having done it before, and apparently having it as part of her physical makeup now with the super-strength, it feels so strange.] Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, especially if it's expensive, I - made a pretty huge mess of Ryan's before I got it right.

[Write a spell. How does she even.]

- wherever you think is good to start! [She's flustered, but there's not even a hint of judgment. It's all unease, all strange newness.]

[Squeak.]

U-um... Then... I think, as long as we don't mix any paint...

How about we just use normal ink for now?

[ Oh god. He's scared her. His face turns a sickening shade of red. ]

Ah. Maybe. I'm... er. I'm not that bad, I swear. Magic is... I mean we have wands and movements and incantations and just a lot of things. Not just circles and words and --

[ He'll just shut up now. ]

Yeah. Ink. Ink is good.

Mixing it sure is hard... The first time I tried, it exploded a little.

[A-ahaha... But nevertheless, she flips to some of the more simple arrays, swapping out her sheet of paper for a fresh one from a stack.]

This page mostly has basic ones, so I thought it would be a good one to use for examples. All of the spells are just words that make up what we want the spell to do, written in a type of pattern. So this one [point!] is what I use for melon bread. The words I used to describe it are just written in a circle-- see?

[Well... maybe if you could actually decipher the runes that make it up. But they do look quite a bit like an actual letter system.]
