[Gene's voice is the first part of his message to go out over the system.]

Hello? Oh, hey! I think it's on, that's perfect. Nice and intuitive, just the way it should be. Now I just need to...get this...thing...

[The image function clicks on, showing Gene's broad, self-assured smile. He's obviously very pleased with himself.]

Ha ha, nailed it! Awesome, I knew I'd get it right. I'll have the ins and out of this place mastered in a day, tops. So, since I've just revealed my own fabulous face to you people, why don't you all do the same? Be nice to get a look at what kind of neighbors I'm going to have around here. Name, where you're from, which house they threw you in, you know the drill.

Hell, I'll even go first. Name's Gene. Gene Starwind, co-proprietor of Starwind and Hawking, and soon-to-be-famous grappler pilot. Nice to meetcha'. I'm from a cozy little rock called Sentinel 3, nestled deep in the Hei Phong region of space. Back home I used to handle everything from bodyguarding, to retrieval, to relationship advice.

I know, I know. Pretty impressive. Please, hold your applause. Alas, I'm only one man out of my entire crew to get here, so I'm afraid fixing this little monochrome problem you all have might take a wee bit longer than usual.

What exactly have you been trained in?

[He raises an eyebrow.]

I am impressed by your modesty.

It says a lot about you that history books are your standard measuring of achievement.

I feel it is better to speak through action than words in such matters.

I am Admiral Ender Wiggin of the International Fleet.

But here I am just Ender.

[The corner of Ender's mouth can't help but twitch upward in slight amusement.]

My title is Admiral.

I'm not sure impressive's the word I'd use, dude. That probably doesn't mean much to a lot of us.

The International Fleet want young soldiers who can comprehend the complexities of the newest technologies. Not old men.

We begin training at 6.

...

[He smirks a little at that]

You may not be a desirable candidate for the program then.

Earth knows about space travel, and we've sent a bunch of guys up to the moon and Mars and stuff, but that? Doesn't sound like anything I've heard of.

It is strange. Where I am from to be selected for the International Fleet is everything. If you are not, if you flunk out, if you fail...you are nothing. Or maybe worse.

But right now, I think I am glad to be very far away from them.
